System Intel Dossier

Theater Overview: The Crucible of the Galaxy

The Mataras System—widely referred to throughout the galaxy simply as the Pact Worlds—is a densely populated, politically complex solar system orbiting the yellow dwarf star Mataras. Despite the disappearance of its historical cradle world during The Gap, the system remains the undisputed crossroads of known space, primarily because the Starstone aboard Absalom Station acts as the galaxy’s most powerful navigation beacon inside The Drift.

For nearly three centuries following The Gap, the system’s worlds operated as rival, independent powers, fighting localized resource wars and fending off raids from the undead navy of Eox and pirate syndicates in The Diaspora. That fractured era ended in 291 AG when external aggression from the neighboring reptilian empire of the Veskarium forced the system’s diverse civilizations to sign the Absalom Pact. Today, the system is governed by representative democracy on Absalom Station, policed by the elite Stewards, and interconnected by constant interplanetary trade.

The Pre-Gap Mystery

Every world in the Mataras System bears scars of pre-Gap history that modern science cannot fully explain. Ancient, solar-shielded cities hang tethered inside the plasma of Mataras, subterranean alien vaults riddle the interior of Apostae, and ancient Drift lanes converge on the void where a forgotten planet once orbited.

Manifest of the 14 Celestial Bodies

The following astrogation intelligence reports map out the primary inhabited worlds, stations, and orbital regions of the Mataras System, ordered outward from the sun.

1. Mataras (The Burning Sun)
  • Status: Pact Protectorate / Deep-Solar Energy Hub
  • Summary: The yellow dwarf star at the center of the system is far from uninhabited. Anchored within its roaring solar filaments are the Burning Archipelago—a chain of enchanted, force-shielded bubble cities connected by fireproof conduits. Originally built by pre-Gap planar travelers, these habitats (led by the port city of Dawnshore) are populated by Suli, fire elementals, and Efreet, serving as the system’s premier center for plasma mining and stellar research.
2. Aballon (The Horse)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Construct Technocracy
  • Summary: The innermost planet of the system is a scorched, cratered, airless rock rich in heavy metals and bathed in intense solar radiation. Aballon is ruled entirely by the Anacites, a race of self-replicating sentient machines left behind by vanished pre-Gap creators. From towering industrial complexes like First City, the Anacites endlessly harvest solar power and manufacture advanced technology, philosophically split between Those Who Wait (for their creators’ return) and Those Who Become (who seek independent evolution).
3. Castrovel (The Green Mother)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Multi-State Coalition
  • Summary: A hot, humid world of steaming primordial jungles, inland seas, and colossal megafauna. Castrovel is divided among three distinct powers: the telepathic, scholarly Lashunta who govern from sparkling arcology-cities like Qabarat; the insectoid Formians, who recently ended a millennia-long war with the Lashunta; and the isolationist Elves of the continent of Sovyrian, who guard their ancient pre-Gap magical traditions from outsiders.
4. Absalom Station (The Nexus at the Void)
  • Status: System Capital / Seat of the Pact Council
  • Summary: Orbiting third from the sun in the exact spatial coordinates where the lost world of Golarion vanished during The Gap, Absalom Station is a five-mile-wide starbase housing millions of citizens from every known species. Powered by the divine Starstone reactor at its core, the station serves as the headquarters for the Pact Council, The Stewards, and the Starfinder Society. Its neighborhoods range from the wealthy corporate towers of the Eye to the lawless, gang-controlled lower decks of the Spike.
5. Akiton (The Red Planet)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Post-Industrial Frontier
  • Summary: Once the wealthy mining powerhouse of the system due to its massive deposits of thasteron starship fuel, Akiton suffered catastrophic economic collapse when Drift engines rendered thasteron obsolete. Today, its rust-red deserts and freezing canyons are a lawless frontier of abandoned corporate ghost towns, nomadic Shobhads (four-armed giants), clever Ysoki salvagers, and bloodthirsty gladiatorial arenas in hubs like Arl and Maro.
6. Verces (The Ring of Nations)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Cybernetic Confederacy
  • Summary: Verces is tidally locked to the sun: one hemisphere is a blistered desert of eternal noon (Fullbright), and the other is a frozen wasteland of eternal midnight (Darkside). Virtually all civilization is concentrated within the Ring of Nations, a narrow temperate twilight zone encircling the globe. Known as the birthplace of The Stewards and the center of the Augmented movement, Verces leads the system in cybernetics, biotech, and spacefleet engineering.
7. The Diaspora (The Shattered Belt)
  • Status: Represented Territory / Lawless Asteroid Expanse
  • Summary: Millions of rocky asteroids orbiting between Verces and Eox, representing the pulverized remains of two twin planets (Damiar and Iovo) destroyed in antiquity. While Dwarves operate massive hollowed-out mining citadels and the void-adapted Sarcesians string sniper-communes between paired rocks, the belt is notorious as the stronghold of the Free Captains—a ruthless coalition of space pirates ruling from the hidden asteroid haven of Broken Rock.
8. The Idari (The Eternal Colony Ship)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Sovereign Generation Ship
  • Summary: A colossal, multi-mile-long cylinder starship permanently parked in an orbit just beyond The Diaspora. Built ages ago by the four-armed, tradition-bound Kasathas for a sub-light voyage from their dying home star, The Idari arrived in the Mataras System only to discover its worlds were already claimed. Its rotating interior drums hold artificial deserts, factories, and ancient temples where Kasatha clans balance ancestral customs with modern galactic politics.
9. Eox (The Dead World)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Necromantic Oligarchy
  • Summary: Prior to The Gap, the inhabitants of Eox destroyed the twin worlds of The Diaspora with a planet-cracking superweapon, only for the backlash to incinerate their own atmosphere. To survive, the planetary elite—the Bone Sages—transformed themselves into undead liches and necrovites. Today, Eox is a blasted, radioactive wasteland of bone-spires, necromantic factories, and cruel reality-television bloodsports, shadowed by rumors that its rulers secretly fund the exiled Corpse Fleet.
10. Triaxus (The Wanderer)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Draconic-Corporate Feudalism
  • Summary: Due to its wildly eccentric orbital path, Triaxus experiences seasons that last over a century each. Currently transitioning into its generations-long Great Winter, the planet is home to the dimorphic Ryphorians and powerful True Dragons. Rather than sleeping on piles of gold, the dragons of the Dragonkin and Allied Territories run cutthroat interplanetary megacorporations, facing off against the militaristic Skyfire Legion.
11. Liavara (The Dreamer)
  • Status: Brethedan Protectorate / Ecological Preserve
  • Summary: A serene, peach-and-gold ringed gas giant protected under strict environmental laws by its larger sister world, Bretheda. Its upper atmosphere is populated by drifting, ascetic Barathu “Dreamers” whose songs help stabilize the planet’s storms, while its numerous moons—such as the resort moon of Roselight and the harsh mining moon of Nchak—host bustling off-world settlements.
12. Bretheda (The Cradle)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Bio-Technological Collective
  • Summary: The largest planet in the system is a turbulent blue-green gas giant inhabited by the Barathu—amorphous floating aliens capable of rewriting their own genetic code and merging into massive corporate super-beings. Operating from living, buoyant sky-cities like Sophiar, Bretheda dominates the system’s biological engineering market, growing living starships and administering dozens of inhabited moons across the outer system.
13. Apostae (The Maiden)
  • Status: Full Pact Member / Megacorporate Drow Autocracy
  • Summary: An airless, barren planetoid near the edge of the system that is actually a titanic, millennia-old alien derelict spacecraft captured by Mataras’s gravity. The surface and upper caverns are ruled by ruthless Drow noble houses who operate as arms-dealing megacorporations from the dark metropolis of Nightarch. Using indentured Orcs and half-orcs as shock troops, the Drow harvest grotesque fleshwarping technology and xenotech from the sealed alien vaults deep inside the planetoid’s core.
14. Aucturn (The Stranger)
  • Status: Non-Member World / Quarantine Hazard
  • Summary: The outermost planet of the Mataras System is a swollen, sickly yellow world swathed in toxic, hallucinogenic mists. Shunned by the Pact Council, Aucturn is widely believed by occult scholars to be a living, embryonic Great Old One slowly gestating at the edge of the system. Its shifting, organic continents are ruled by the enigmatic Carcinoi, Cults of the Elder Mythos, and the nightmare-worshipping oracle Casandalee / Nyarlathotep sects out of Citadel of the Black.
