Astrogation Dossier: The Blazing Mother

Mataras—derived from the ancient Lashunta tongue for the “Burning Mother” and universally designated across astronomical registries simply as The Sun—is the gravitational and energetic anchor of the Mataras System. Orbiting at the center of the fourteen worlds of the Pact Worlds, this turbulent yellow dwarf provides life-sustaining light, warmth, and solar currents to every celestial body from innermost Aballon to frozen, eerie Aucturn.

Far from being an empty fusion furnace, Mataras is one of the most vibrant, strategically vital, and fiercely contested locations in known space. Suspended within the star’s raging upper corona floats The Burning Archipelago, an ancient cluster of enchanted, force-shielded bubble-cities that serves as the holy seat of the Church of Sarenrae, a crossroads for interplanar commerce, and the galaxy’s foremost center for stellar plasma extraction. Deeper still, beneath the blinding photosphere in the crushing depths known as the Deep Sun, lie forgotten pre-Gap stations, subterranean alien derelicts, and planar rifts directly connecting the material universe to the blistering heart of the Plane of Fire.

Physical Dynamics & Planar Permeability

Mataras exhibits extreme stellar and planar properties that defy conventional astrophysics:

  • Stellar Anatomy: The star features a turbulent convection zone, a blinding photosphere churning with convective granules, and an extended corona racked by violent solar prominences, coronal mass ejections, and magnetic flux loops.
  • Planar Weakness: The immense energetic concentration of Mataras creates a naturally permeable threshold between the Material Plane and the inner energy planes. Spontaneous tears regularly vent purifying energy from the Positive Energy Plane and superheated elemental fury from the Plane of Fire. These planar rifts attract native fire elementals, salamanders, efreet, and extraplanar explorers.
  • Indigenous Solar Megafauna: The outer plasma layers are populated by extremophile lifeforms capable of surviving thermonuclear heat. Schools of radiant sun-skimmers glide along solar magnetic lines, predatory plasma oozes drift within solar flares, and colossal solar drakes occasionally dive into the deeper plasma troughs.
  • The Solar Transit Conduit: Standard starships without specialized heat shielding cannot survive proximity to the sun. However, vessels steering toward the Burning Archipelago can enter a designated, anomalous corridor of calm solar energy—a tranquil, low-radiation plasma tunnel that automatically parts when authorized craft approach along an approved astrogation vector.

History & The Revelation

Like much of the galaxy’s ancient wonders, the true origin of civilization within Mataras is lost behind the impenetrable veil of The Gap.

Pre-Gap Mystery

When mortals emerged from the Gap in 0 AG, astronomical telemetry revealed the presence of geometric anomalies floating unharmed within the solar corona. These structures were completely uninhabited, held together by ancient, self-sustaining magical matrices and force barriers that deflected the full fury of the star.

The Speech Under the Prominence (c. 223 AG)

Nearly a century prior to the modern era, Sarenite solar astronomer Sister Novaheart piloted a heavily shielded research skiff into the corona and successfully docked with the central bubble. Beaming a historic holo-broadcast across the Pact Worlds known as the Speech Under the Prominence, Novaheart proclaimed the archipelago to be a divine gift from the Dawnflower—a sanctuary forged for mortals to dwell peacefully within the light of creation.

The broadcast ignited a massive migration. Pilgrims of Sarenrae, solarians of the Kasathas, Android pioneers seeking freedom, Ysoki scavengers, and adventurous Lashunta scholars rushed into the star to colonize the empty shells, rapidly transforming the abandoned bubbles into a thriving interplanetary metropolis.

The Burning Archipelago

The premier coronal settlement of the Pact Worlds consists of a constellation of transparent, force-field bubbles of varied sizes, suspended at fixed intervals within the star’s chromosphere.

Structural Architecture & Transit
  • Force Bubbles: The cities are enclosed within self-healing energy membranes of unknown pre-Gap provenance. These barriers repel exterior plasma, resist millions of atmospheres of stellar pressure, generate an internal gravity field equivalent to 1 Standard G, and automatically polarize exterior luminescence to shield biological eyes from total blindness.
  • Energy Tethers: Massive ribbons of solidified radiant energy bind the bubbles together in an unyielding geometric array, preventing orbital drift.
  • Inter-Bubble Transit: Sealed transit cars called linecrawlers ride magnetic channels along the exterior of the energy tethers, shuttling millions of commuters daily. More daring pilots pilot sunskimmers—light, hyper-shielded shuttles that ride the raw solar winds between bubble airlocks.

The Six Primary Bubble-Cities
1. Dawnshore (The Threshold of Light)
  • Role: Capital City, Primary Spaceport, and Sovereign Seat
  • Highlights: The largest and most heavily fortified bubble in the chain. Dawnshore is the administrative capital of the Archipelago and contains the primary orbital drydocks where interplanetary starships arrive through the solar conduit.
  • The Radiant Cathedral: Rising at the apex of the city, this magnificent cathedral constructed of gold, solar glass, and incandescent marble serves as the galaxy’s supreme temple to Sarenrae. High Priests and sun-paladins administer charity, negotiate inter-bubble treaties, and welcome hundreds of thousands of solar pilgrims annually.
2. Corona (The Interplanar Exchange)
  • Role: Commercial District and Planar Diplomatic Port
  • Highlights: Corona is a bustling, chaotic mercantile free-port centered around commerce with extraplanar travelers.
  • The Brass Bazaar: A sprawling, open-air bazaar governed by treaties with the Sultanate of the Plane of Fire. Efreet merchants, salamander metalworkers, and Pact World corporate brokers trade rare fire-gems, distilled stellar plasma, planar raw materials, and high-temperature cybernetics in stalls bathed in golden light.
3. Stellacuna (The Hall of Researches)
  • Role: Scientific Capital and Solarian Enclave
  • Highlights: Stellacuna is home to the most prestigious academies of stellar astrophysics, helio-engineering, and plasma transmutation in the galaxy.
  • Deep Cultures Institute: A dedicated xenological and archaeological consortium studying anomalous pre-Gap relics dredged up from the lower solar mantle. Kasatha and human solarians maintain monasteries here, meditating directly upon the stellar core to harmonize photon and graviton balance.
4. Fireside (The Forge Dome)
  • Role: Heavy Manufacturing and Plasma Processing
  • Highlights: The industrial heart of the Archipelago, where megacorporations tap directly into the corona’s limitless thermal energy.
  • Fireside Foundry: Massive industrial complexes specializing in heat-resistant metallurgy, plasma weapon manufacture, and thermal shielding. Notably, Fireside is home to pioneering cybernetic clinics that manufacture specialized, heat-resistant Android chassis designed for zero-atmosphere and volcanic labor.
5. Verdeon (The Living Biosphere)
  • Role: Agriculture, Ecology, and Leisure
  • Highlights: A stunning contrast to the surrounding inferno, Verdeon is an artificial paradise of lush green forests, tiered agricultural terraces, and hanging botanical gardens.
  • Pleasure Domes & Farms: Maintained by advanced bio-technicians and druidic circles, Verdeon grows fresh produce for the entire Archipelago and features luxury resort biospheres engineered to recreate the lost wilderness of pre-Gap Golarion and the moist jungles of Castrovel.
6. Asanatown (The Paranoiac Enclave)
  • Role: Defensive Enclave and Psychic Watchpost
  • Highlights: A secluded bubble settled primarily by Lashunta migrants. Unlike the tranquil atmosphere of Dawnshore, Asanatown is gripped by chronic tension, cynicism, and militarized paranoia.
  • The Psychic Wail: Due to the Lashuntas’ innate telepathic sensitivity, residents are plagued by persistent, low-frequency psychic reverberations emanating from deep within the star. Governed by a grim council of korasha military veterans, the city maintains high-alert lockdown protocols, constantly bracing for catastrophic solar flares, dome failures, or extraplanar invasions from the Deep Sun.

The Deep Sun: Secrets of the Interior

Beyond the safe embrace of the Burning Archipelago, beneath thousands of miles of roaring convective plasma, lies the Deep Sun—a realm of crushing pressures and incomprehensible temperatures accessible only to specially engineered sun-diver submersibles.

1. Far Portal Station

Suspended in the lower convective zone, Far Portal Station is an ancient pre-Gap orbital ring locking down a titanic, permanently stable dimensional gateway leading straight into the heart of the Plane of Fire. Control of the station is a constant shadow war between Pact World researchers, private corporate contractors, and aggressive extraplanar cartels.

2. Ezorod (The Blind City)

One of the greatest astronomical paradoxes in the galaxy, Ezorod is an impossible, lightless megalopolis adrift deep within the solar mantle. Enclosed in an entropic field that completely absorbs heat and consumes all photons, Ezorod is pitch-black despite floating inside a thermonuclear furnace. Explorers who have penetrated its cold, obsidian towers report ancient robotic guardians, terrifying stasis vaults, and lost technology capable of mastering gravity and entropy.

3. Kahlannal & The Anassanois

Deep within the solar interior drifts Kahlannal, an ancient, titanic generation ship that entered Mataras countless eons ago. Its inhabitants, the Anassanois, are an indigenous race of slender, three-eyed humanoids possessing two vertical mouths and powerful innate telepathy. Having fled the destruction of their ancestral home star, they survived inside their shielded ark-city, cut off from the wider galaxy until modern deep-sun expeditions pierced their sanctuary.

4. The Crucible

A heavily fortified military installation established in the solar depths by militant Efreet forces and planar conquerors. From this subterranean redoubt, hostile extraplanar commanders have repeatedly attempted to weaponize solar plasma conduits, hijack pre-Gap relays, and stage sudden invasions against the unsuspecting bubble-cities of the Archipelago above.

Governance & Political Standing

  • Pact Directorate Representation: The Burning Archipelago is recognized as a sovereign Pact Protectorate within the Pact Council on Absalom Station. It sends an elected delegation of ministers to advocate for solar mining rights, interplanar trade tariffs, and defense funding.
  • Defense & Security: The external perimeter of the solar conduit is patrolled by specialized sun-cutter starships belonging to The Stewards. Inside the bubbles, order is maintained by the Dawnguard (an allied security force of Sarenite paladins and professional constables) alongside local precinct militias within individual bubbles like Asanatown and Fireside.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Stolen Sun-Relic: A shipment of pre-Gap artifacts recovered from Far Portal Station is hijacked in the Brass Bazaar of Corona. The Starfinder Society hires the crew to track the thieves through the chaotic market before the relic is smuggled through an illicit rift to the Plane of Fire.
  • Psychic Crisis in Asanatown: The telepathic hum torturing the lashuntas of Asanatown suddenly spikes into a debilitating shriek, triggering madness and citywide riots. The party must venture into the city’s under-levels or dive toward Ezorod to locate and silence the signal’s source.
  • Infiltration of The Crucible: The Stewards detect clandestine energy build-ups in the deep convection zone indicating that efreeti saboteurs are preparing to destabilize the energy tethers of Dawnshore. The PCs must pilot an experimental sun-diver vessel into the solar core to infiltrate the efreeti redoubt and sabotage their plasma cannons.
