Astrogation Dossier: The Dying Forge

Akiton—universally chronicled across the galaxy as The Red Planet—is the fourth world outward from Mataras. A small, ancient, and slowly dying terrestrial world of rust-colored iron dust, dry salt beds, and gargantuan canyon networks, Akiton possesses only a third of standard gravity ( G) and an uncomfortably thin, frigid atmosphere.

Once the proud industrial powerhouse of the pre-Gap solar system, Akiton today is a cautionary tale of planetary boom and bust. For centuries, its economy was sustained by vast deposits of thasteron, a volatile crimson mineral that served as the primary sublight rocket fuel for the entire system. When the revelation of The Drift rendered thasteron fuel obsolete almost overnight, interplanetary megacorporations abandoned their strip mines and refineries, leaving millions unemployed. Today, Akiton is the system’s quintessential post-industrial frontier: a harsh, lawless world of decaying company ghost towns, nomadic tribal honor, cutthroat gladiatorial bloodsports, and endless salvage.

Planetary Geography & Environmental Zones

Akiton is an arid world that lost its oceans eons ago. Its surface is divided between freezing polar ice fields, endless iron-sand dunes, and colossal rift canyons where civilization clings to life.

1. The Edaio Rift & Maro

The Edaio Rift is an immense tectonic chasm hundreds of miles long and up to four miles deep. Because Akiton’s thin atmosphere pools within low-altitude chasms, the air pressure at the bottom of the rift is naturally dense and breathable.

  • Maro (The City of a Thousand Lights): The largest metropolis on Akiton. Rather than sprawling across flat ground, Maro is constructed vertically, clinging to the sheer basalt cliff walls of the rift. Its multi-tiered decks, hanging residential modules, and neon-lit trade districts are interconnected by webbed suspension bridges, vertical gravity lifts, and cargo gondolas. Maro is a vital trade nexus, where off-world corporations negotiate with local scrap barons.
2. The Arlkari Plateau & Arl

A windswept, heavily fortified highland rising above the surrounding red desert plains.

  • Arl: One of the oldest continuous cities on the planet. Built around ancient iron foundries, Arl is governed by an authoritarian military warlord known as the thurok. The city is famous throughout the Pact Worlds for its brutal gladiatorial coliseums—where bio-enhanced warriors, desperate debtors, and captured beasts fight for prize money broadcast on interplanetary entertainment networks.
3. Daza (The City of Fusion)

A chaotic, half-irradiated frontier boomtown located in the equatorial badlands. Daza grew around the ruins of a massive pre-Gap nuclear fusion power station. While the core leaks low-grade radiation that mutates local wildlife, it provides cheap, abundant energy that attracts rogue biohackers, black-market cybernetic clinics, and unlicensed weapons manufacturers.

4. Estuar & The Polar Ice

A gritty, rough-and-tumble trading post situated on the permafrost fringes of Akiton’s southern polar ice cap.

  • The Ice Trade: Water is Akiton’s most precious liquid currency. The miners of Estuar harvest glacial carbon-ice and ancient frozen subterranean aquifers, melting and purifying the water into pressurized tank-convoys that trek across the scorched deserts to supply thirsty equatorial settlements.
5. Ashok Crater & The Halls of Reason

A colossal, ancient meteor crater hundreds of miles wide in the planet’s northern hemisphere. The impact exposed strange psychic crystalline veins that act as a natural psionic amplifier.

  • The Halls of Reason: The monastic citadel of the Contemplatives of Ashok. Floating within anti-gravity chambers and deep sensory-deprivation vaults, the Contemplatives link their swollen brains into a collective telepathic lattice, transmitting and receiving telepathic communiques that resonate across deep space.

History: The Thasteron Collapse

Akiton’s contemporary culture is defined entirely by the traumatic economic catastrophe of 3 AG.

The Golden Age of Fuel

Before and during The Gap, sublight travel between the worlds of the Mataras System relied heavily on thasteron—a highly volatile, energy-dense mineral found almost exclusively in Akiton’s deep tectonic fractures. Chemical rockets, interplanetary pulse-engines, and local power plants burned refined thasteron by the megaton. Megacorporations like AbadarCorp built colossal trench-crawlers and floating processing cities, importing millions of workers and enriching planetary barons.

The Signal & The Drift Crash (3 AG)

When the machine god Triune broadcast The Signal in 3 AG, gifting the galaxy the blueprints for the Drift Engine, the physics of space travel were rewritten overnight. Starships no longer required years of slow burn fueled by volatile thasteron tanks to travel between planets or systems; a cheap hyper-spatial jump took days.

Within a decade, global demand for thasteron plummeted by ninety-nine percent. Mining shares collapsed, corporate refineries were shuttered, and extraction syndicates evacuated their management overnight. The abandoned miners, security grunts, and native populations were left stranded among towering rust-skeletons of dead machinery. Akiton transformed from an industrial hub into a scavengers’ frontier.

Peoples & Native Cultures

Despite its harsh environment, Akiton boasts several unique, highly adapted native species:

1. The Ysoki (Ratfolk)

Akiton is the ancestral homeworld of the Ysoki, the witty, fast-talking, rodent-like humanoids who have since spread across every station and starship in the galaxy. Renowned for their expansive cheek pouches, mechanical ingenuity, and unyielding optimism, the Ysoki survived the economic collapse better than anyone—scavenging abandoned corporate tech, hot-wiring dead generators, and forming resourceful merchant clans.

2. The Shobhads

Towering, 10-foot-tall humanoids equipped with four muscular arms and grey-blue skin. Organized into nomadic warrior clans that traverse the desert atop six-legged reptilian droukits, the Shobhads live by an unyielding ancestral code of honor. They are peerless snipers and bladesmen, hand-forging lethal Shobhad horizon rifles capable of piercing light vehicle armor at extreme range.

3. The Contemplatives of Ashok

Long before the Gap, humanoids on Akiton unlocked deep psionic and occult disciplines, choosing to atrophy their physical bodies over generations in favor of intellectual evolution. Today, Contemplatives resemble giant, pulsing brain-sacs hovering on telekinetic fields, their tiny, vestigial limbs dangling beneath. They serve as neutral judges, data brokers, and cosmic philosophers.

4. The Ikeshti

Small, red-scaled desert reptilians known as nimble scavengers and survivalists during their youth (broods). As Ikeshti age, hormonal surges transform a portion of the population into hulking, savage, 8-foot-tall breeding alphas known as rivani, requiring strict cultural rituals to manage their biological fury.

Governance & The Pact Directorate

  • Decentralized Sovereignty: Although Akiton holds a full seat on the Pact Council on Absalom Station, it possesses no unified planetary government. Its delegation is selected by a loose, contentious coalition of city-state councils (from Maro and Arl), the Contemplatives of Ashok, and nomadic Shobhad clan chiefs.
  • The Absence of Law: Outside the fortified perimeters of major cities, there is no centralized planetary police force. The Stewards maintain only a token diplomatic outpost in Maro, generally leaving desert caravans and mining outposts to resolve disputes with hired guns, bounty hunters, or frontier duels.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Lost Thasteron Cache: Rumors circulate in Maro that a sealed pre-Gap corporate vault belonging to a bankrupt extraction syndicate has been exposed in the Edaio Rift, holding refined military-grade fuel cells and prototype cybernetics. The PCs must race against ruthless Ysoki scavengers and a Shobhad warband to claim the salvage.
  • Coliseum Rebellion in Arl: The tyrannical thurok of Arl arrests the party on trumped-up customs charges, sentencing them to fight in the city’s infamous gladiatorial sands. To survive, the heroes must forge an alliance with fellow arena prisoners and incite a citywide revolt.
  • The Ashok Resonance: A chaotic psychic pulse radiates from Ashok Crater, driving local Ikeshti broods into premature, violent rivani frenzies. A panicked Contemplative hires the party to escort an experimental psionic dampener into the heart of the crater before the psychic storm engulfs neighboring towns.
