Abadar: The Master of the First Vault

QUOTE

“The wilderness is a canvas of chaos; civilization is the masterpiece drawn upon it. Trade with an honest scale, uphold the law with an unyielding hand, and let the walls of the city stand as a testament to mortal progress.”
— The Order of Numbers, Holy Scripture of Abadar

Abadar is the patient, calculating god of cities, law, merchants, and wealth. Operating from the First Vault in the Eternal City of Axis, he represents the literal concept of civilization itself. He is not a god of raw greed, but rather of structured commerce, fair trade, and the collective safety that laws and city walls provide. He desires a world where all sentient ancestries live under a unified, fair legal framework, trading goods peacefully across secure roads.

He possesses a remarkably neat beard, perfectly manicured hair, and is usually shown holding a massive gold key or a flawlessly balanced set of merchant scales. When he is depicted armored for battle, his gold plate armor is completely flawless, functioning as a beautiful piece of art as much as a protective barrier.

His holy symbol is a heavy golden key, often stylized with a city gate structure integrated into the bow. Sacred animals include those associated with urban density and security, such as guard dogs, urban eagles, and the industrious honeybee.

Canonical Eraedal History & Mythos

The First Vault

Central to the theology of Abadar is the myth of the First Vault. Located at the heart of his realm in Axis, this massive divine archive is said to contain a perfect, flawless blueprint of every object, concept, and structural development that has ever existed or will ever exist. It contains the perfect hammer, the perfect legal contract, the perfect city grid, and even the perfect recipe for bread. Abadar’s mortal clerics, engineers, and city planners pray for divine inspiration to glimpse these blueprints, aiming to replicate the perfection of the First Vault in the mortal world.

The Great Neutrality

During the chaotic primordial ages, when the primal gods fought desperate wars against the destructive entity Rovagug, Abadar acted as the ultimate cosmic mediator. He orchestrated the diplomatic pacts required to bind the Rough Beast. He serves as the neutral judge among the gods, rarely taking sides in divine feuds unless the conflict threatens the fundamental existence of trade, law, or civilization itself. Because of this, his temples often serve as neutral ground, banks, and supreme courts in mortal kingdoms.

The Philosophy of Legalism

Abadar loves the law, but he is fundamentally distinct from standard good-aligned deities. To Abadar, an unjust law or a harsh tax is still preferable to the complete chaos of a lawless society. His church teaches that the law provides a predictable baseline for life; if a law is bad, it must be reformed through the proper legal courts and legislative channels, never overthrown through bloody rebellion or vigilantism.

Divine Relationships

Abadar maintains a web of strictly professional, highly legalistic relationships across the cosmos.

Deity / FactionDynamic & Lore
ToragDeep Mutual Respect. Torag respects Abadar’s dedication to architectural craftsmanship and fortification, while Abadar highly values the dwarven commitment to clan law, contracts, and precision engineering.
AsmodeusCautious Collaboration. Abadar and the Archfiend share a deep appreciation for contracts and strict order. However, Abadar despises how Asmodeus uses loop-holes to enslave souls, viewing it as a corrupt perversion of a clean transaction.
IomedaeIdeological Ally. While Iomedae fights for active justice and moral goodness, Abadar supports her efforts because her crusades establish safe borders where cities and legal trade can flourish.
ErastilPhilosophical Friction. Erastil champions small, self-sufficient agrarian villages, while Abadar focuses entirely on urban density and industrial expansion. They often clash over land development, though both value family and law.
Calistria / Cayden CaileanDisdain. Abadar views Cayden’s chaotic freedom as a direct path to public intoxication and property damage, and regards Calistria’s emphasis on personal vengeance as a complete threat to a functional court system.
