Origin & The Tragedy of the Gap

Humans are ubiquitous across the Pact Worlds and the Near Space colonies. Inquisitive, relentless, and fiercely adaptable, they have colonized every planetary sphere, orbital station, and asteroid cluster capable of supporting life.

Yet beneath humanity’s outward interstellar triumph lies an indelible wound: Humanity does not know where it truly came from.

  • When the cosmic amnesia of The Gap receded, humanity found themselves adrift in the solar system without their ancestral cradle. Their home planet, Lost Golarion, was simply gone—mysteriously vanished from the heart of the system without a single recorded transmission or gravimetric trace.
  • In Golarion’s place hovered Absalom Station, with humanity already established as its primary demographic and the mysterious, primordial Starstone pulsing at its core.
  • Rather than succumbing to despair over their lost antiquity, humanity rallied: they leveraged Absalom Station into the diplomatic capital of the system, co-authored The Absalom Pact, and spearheaded the exploration of the stars when Triune gifted the galaxy the secret of the Drift.

Characteristics & Culture

Humanity’s defining evolutionary trait is not natural armor, venom, or inherent magic, but their astounding cultural and biological adaptability:

1. Societal Diversity & Pragmatism

While other species often exhibit broad biological or cultural uniformity—such as the communal hierarchy of the Shirrens or the honor-bound martial code of the Vesk—humanity is dizzyingly fractured:

  • A human can be an austere knight of Iomedae enforcing space law in heavy powered armor, an unprincipled corporate lobbyist for AbadarCorp, an eccentric technomancer plumbing ancient digital ruins, or a bloodthirsty space pirate aboard a raider in Broken Rock.
  • This lack of fixed dogma allows humanity to rapidly integrate with alien cultures, broker complex multi-species alliances, and pioneer technological advancements at a dizzying pace.

2. Augmentation & Cybernetics

Because humans lack native biological adaptations for extreme environments (such as the void-wings of the Sarcesians or the subterranean senses of the Drow), they are among the most enthusiastic adopters of cybernetic and biological augmentations:

  • Dermal plating, synthetic lung filters, datajacks, and cybernetic limbs are common across all strata of human society, blurring the boundary between biological mortal and synthetic being.

Humans in the Diaspora

Within The Diaspora, humanity constitutes a massive, driving demographic that shapes both the legitimate economy and the criminal underworld:

1. Corporate Wildcatters & Miners

Attracted by the promise of astronomical mineral wealth, tens of thousands of human miners work contract shifts for conglomerates like AbadarCorp or independent prospecting ventures. They pilot heavily shielded ore-dredges, brave the zero-g vacuum, and operate refining smelters inside hollowed asteroids like Torag’s Anvil.

2. The Backbone of the Free Captains

Human ambition and restlessness make them natural recruits for the Free Captains.

  • On Broken Rock, humans hold high seats on the Pirate Council, commanding fleets of heavily armed sloops, missile corvettes, and refitted corporate transports.
  • Human corsairs are known for their daring, high-risk boarding actions and their loose, pragmatic adherence to the Code of Asteroids, frequently serving as fences who move stolen belt goods through human commercial brokers on Absalom Station.

3. Seekers of Forgotten Antiquity

Because the Diaspora was formed from the catastrophic shattering of ancient terrestrial civilizations, human scholars, antiquarians, and operatives from the Starfinder Society constantly scour the belt. They dive the submerged vaults of The River Between and deep-core crevasses on Nisis, searching for pre-Gap relics that might shed light on what happened to Lost Golarion.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Lost Colony of Golarion: A rogue human mining crew in the Diaspora blasts into an unmapped nickel-iron asteroid and uncovers an intact, perfectly preserved pre-Gap colony bunker sealed with magic dating back to the legendary empire of Azlant. The PCs must secure the bunker before rival human factions loot its historical archives.
  • The Claim-Jumping War: A greedy human executive from a Core World mining cartel has fabricated false boundary titles to seize a dozen productive ice-claims owned by independent dwarven and human families along The River Between. The miners hire the PCs to mount an armed defense of their berths.
  • Pirate King’s Bloodline: A human pirate commodore on Broken Rock perishes under suspicious circumstances, leaving behind a encrypted will that names a low-level PC (or one of their close allies) as the sole heir to a fleet of privateer corvettes and an immense hidden hoard of refined adamantine.
