Pharasma: The Lady of Graves

QUOTE

“The thread begins in darkness, weaves through the flash of mortal light, and ends invariably at my throne. Do not fear the shears, do not disrupt the loom, and grant the quiet clay its hard-earned rest.”
— The Bones Landed True, Holy Scripture of Pharasma

Pharasma is the ancient, dispassionate goddess of fate, death, prophecy, and birth. Sitting atop her crystal throne in the Boneyard—a realm resting at the literal summit of the Outer Planes’ sprawling geography—she judges the soul of every mortal being that passes away. Pharasma is not a deity of cruelty or malice; she regards death not as a tragedy, but as the natural, inevitable completion of a mortal’s personal cycle. Her church represents the dual mysteries of existence: guiding newborns into the world with protective midwifery and laying the dead to rest with absolute solemnity.

Appearance & Iconography

Pharasma is traditionally depicted as a towering, ethereal humanoid woman with stark, ash-grey skin and long, flowing hair the color of deep midnight. She is wrapped in heavy, somber robes of dark blue and silver, and her expression is universally described as completely unreadable—neither smiling with warmth nor frowning with anger. She is frequently shown holding a spinning distaff, pulling the threads of mortal souls from the ether, or holding an hourglass containing silver sands that never stop falling.

Her primary holy symbol is a stylized, looping blue spiral that represents the journey of a soul from birth, through life, and down into the Boneyard. Sacred animals include those associated with transitions, scavengers, and watchers of the dead, specifically whippoorwills, owls, scarab beetles, and black cats.

Canonical Eraedal History & Mythos

The Cosmic Survivor

Pharasma is arguably the oldest entity in the entire multiverse. According to cosmic lore, she is the sole survivor of the previous universe that existed before the current cosmos was born. When her original reality collapsed into raw planar entropy, she stepped through the void into the unformed raw matter of the current universe, carrying the very first soul. Because she witnessed the birth of the outer planes, she understands the fundamental blueprints of existence better than any other living god.

The River of Souls & Judgment

Every single mortal soul that dies in the Material Plane enters the River of Souls, a massive, glowing celestial current that flows through the Astral Plane before emptying into Pharasma’s realm, the Boneyard. There, Pharasma serves as the supreme judge of the cosmos. Assisted by her avian celestial servants, the psychopomps, she reviews the mortal actions, alignments, and unfulfilled obligations of every spirit. She then directs them to their final afterlife in the Outer Planes (such as Axis, Heaven, the Abyss, or Elysium), feeding the very planar architecture of the universe itself.

The Shattering of Prophecy

For millennia, Pharasma was the absolute master of prophecy, possessing a flawless ledger that detailed exactly how every mortal life and empire would fall. However, this changed catastrophically at the dawn of the Age of Lost Omens with the sudden, unexplained death of the human god Aroden. Aroden’s death completely broke the cosmic matrix of prophecy; historical predictions failed, stars shifted, and even Pharasma’s perfect foresight was severed. Today, she no longer guides mortals using prophecies, forcing the world to forge its own unpredictable destiny.

Divine Relationships

Pharasma maintains a position of absolute neutrality, viewing the petty political conflicts and moral wars of other deities from an immense, cold distance.

Deity / FactionDynamic & Lore
UrgathoaEternal, Burning Hatred. Urgathoa was a mortal soul who, upon dying, looked at Pharasma’s judgment line, panicked, and clawed her way back to the Material Plane, becoming Eraedal’s first vampire/undead. Pharasma considers Urgathoa and her necromancer cults to be a systemic rot that breaks the universe’s plumbing.
MagrimColleague of the Vaults. Within the Dwarven Pantheon, Magrim oversees the ancestral dead. Pharasma treats Magrim with professional courtesy, allowing his clergy to manage dwarven crypts and prepare subterranean souls for their journey to the grand scales of the Boneyard.
NethysPlanar Coexistence. Nethys and Pharasma share an ancient connection regarding the raw nature of the planes. While Nethys manipulates the magical energies that bind existence, Pharasma manages the soul-stuff that populates it. They rarely interfere in each other’s works.
IomedaeConditional Alliance. The Church of Light and the Church of the Lady of Graves frequently ally on the battlefield for one specific reason: the absolute annihilation of undead armies and necromantic cults. However, Pharasma refuses to endorse Iomedae’s moral crusades or political borders.
