🦴 Overview: The Endless Catacombs of Bone

The Ossuary is the sprawling, multi-tiered subterranean necropolis running deep beneath the hills of the Necropolis. While wealthy noble houses like House Dallimothan and House Vladaam maintain opulent surface mausoleums of carved marble, the Ossuary has served for seven centuries as the final resting place for the city’s working poor, plague victims, unidentified sailors, and common soldiers fallen in imperial wars.

The scale of the complex is staggering. Descending more than four subterranean levels into the bedrock of the Spire’s plateau, miles of winding corridors are lined with meticulously stacked skulls, femurs, and ribs arranged in intricate geometric mosaics and archways. The air is frigid, dead-still, and thick with the dry, chalky taste of ancient bone-dust.

Because of the sheer density of mortal remains combined with the metaphysical corruption radiating from subterranean fault lines connecting to the Banewarrens, the Ossuary is an epicenter of spontaneous undead creation. The deep catacombs are infested with bone swarms, ghoul warrens, and ancient skeletal guardians that have lost all memory of their mortal lives.

  1. Tier 1: The Hall of Shrouds: The uppermost level, actively maintained by the mortuary guild. Hundreds of stone niches hold newly dried skeletons, illuminated by ever-burning consecrated tallow candles.
  2. Tier 2: The Pestilence Vaults: Chambers holding victims of ancient imperial plagues, sealed behind heavy iron gates and lead-mortared stones. Toxic necrotic miasmas and weeping fungal growths make exploration hazardous without magical breathing wards.
  3. Tiers 3 & 4: The Deep Ossuary: Collapsed, labyrinthine chambers where human bones give way to massive ossuary pits from the Ghul Wars and ancient dwarven epochs. Ghouls frequently dig scavenging warrens here, connecting the Ossuary to the lower sewers of Midtown and the outer threshold of Banewarrens.

Environmental Hazards of the Deep Catacombs

  • Choking Bone-Dust (Hazard 5): Combat or sudden shocks in the lower tiers kick up clouds of ancient powdered bone. Any creature breathing the dust must succeed at a DC 21 Fortitude save or become Sickened 1 (or Sickened 2 and Blinded for 1 round on a critical failure).
  • The Whispering Wall (Complex Haunt, Level 7): Thousands of embedded skulls begin murmuring ancient imperial confessions. Creatures within 30 feet take 4d10 mental damage and must make a DC 25 Will save or become Confused for 1 round.
  • Bone Barrier Collapses: Shattering or detonating spells in the corridors can trigger wall collapses, burying creatures beneath thousands of pounds of skeletal remains (DC 22 Reflex save or restrained and take 4d6 bludgeoning damage).

🧭 Story Hooks for Adventurers

  1. The Ghoul Siphon: Morticians discover that hundreds of fresh bodies are vanishing from Tier 1 niches overnight. Investigation reveals a ravenous pack of deep ghouls tunneling up from subterranean warrens, led by a ghast sorcerer allied with the Cult of the Ebon Hand.
  2. The Lost Signet of House Khatru: Three hundred years ago, a disgraced prince of House Khatru was stripped of his title and dumped into a common plague pit in Tier 2, wearing an heirloom ring that unlocks an impenetrable bank vault in the Nobles’ Quarter. The current patriarch hires the party to find the skeleton.
  3. The Banewarren Seismic Rupture: A subterranean shock from the awakening Banewarrens shatters the lowest floor of the Ossuary, exposing an ancient adamantine door covered in glowing Quarn script. Brother Fabien urgently dispatches the party to investigate what has breached the depths before horrors crawl up into the cemetery.
