Phenomenon Overview: The Blank Page of History

The Gap refers to a period of several thousand years in which historical records, collective mortal memory, and technological data across the entire known universe were inexplicably wiped clean. Roughly three centuries ago—at the moment now universally designated as 0 AG (After Gap)—civilizations across the cosmos effectively “woke up” from a collective historical blackout.

Unlike simple amnesia, the Gap did not strip mortals of their identities, languages, skills, or immediate personal relationships. A starship engineer on Verces still knew how to maintain their vessel’s thrusters, a family on Castrovel still recognized one another around the dinner table, and soldiers locked in war on Akiton still knew who they were fighting. What vanished was the context: no one could remember how long the war had lasted, who started it, or how their ancestors had originally traveled to the stars.

Physical and digital records suffered the exact same fate. Libraries, magical archives, and encrypted computer cores across the galaxy were found either completely blank, corrupted into gibberish, or missing centuries of entries—while records predating the Gap’s mysterious onset remained intact as ancient, mythological relics.

Core Anomalies of the Gap

Scholars, technomancers, and priests of the Starfinder Society have spent over three hundred years cataloging the mechanics of the Gap, identifying four defining truths:

1. Temporal Fuzziness

The Gap did not end at the exact same second across the universe. While all worlds within the Mataras System experienced the return of continuous memory within a window of a few years, edge-case astronomical logs show that some planets and deep-space outposts emerged from the Gap up to a decade earlier or later than their neighbors.

2. The Silence of the Gods

Even the deities of the Pact Worlds offer no clarity. While gods such as Iomedae, Pharasma, and Sarenrae clearly existed before and during the Gap, they universally refuse to divulge what transpired during those missing millennia. When pressed by their most devout high priests, deities either remain completely silent or offer variations of the same cryptic answer: “We cannot speak of it, and it is for your own preservation that you do not know.”

3. The Vanishing of Golarion

The single greatest physical mystery of the Gap is the disappearance of Golarion, the ancient cradle world that once orbited third from Mataras between Castrovel and Akiton. When the Gap ended in 0 AG, Golarion was gone. In its exact orbital path floated Absalom Station, a massive, city-sized starbase powered by the enigmatic Starstone at its core.

Divine magic confirms that Golarion was not destroyed like the shattered twin worlds of The Diaspora; rather, it has been sealed away in an unreachable pocket of reality, safe from whatever transpired during the Gap.

  • The Lost Cradle Theory (Fringe Lore): While mainstream historians attribute all displaced human lineages on Absalom Station to Golarion, fragmented pre-Gap dreams and inexplicable bloodline relics occasionally surface among scattered diaspora families—whispering of another vanished cradle world known only in half-remembered myths as Eraedal.
4. Post-Gap Shock and Reconstruction

The immediate aftermath of 0 AG was a period of widespread panic, economic collapse, and opportunistic warfare. Whole populations found themselves living inside megastructures they did not know how to replicate, orbiting alien stars alongside species they could not remember meeting.

The Dawn of the Modern Era (Post-Gap Timeline)

  • 0 AG (The Awakening): The Gap fades across the Mataras System. Panic grips the populations of Absalom Station and the surrounding worlds as governments scramble to maintain order without historical treaties or records. The Starfinder Society is founded shortly thereafter with the explicit mission of piecing together pre-Gap history.
  • 3 AG (The Signal): Just three years after the Gap ends, the machine-god Triune broadcasts a pan-galactic divine transmission known as The Signal, gifting every spacefaring civilization the blueprints for the Drift Engine and unlocking faster-than-light travel through the hyperspace plane of The Drift.
  • 36 AG (The Magefire Assault): The undead Bone Sages of Eox launch a devastating magical strike against Castrovel and Absalom Station, proving the system’s vulnerability.
  • 291 AG (The Pact Worlds Treaty): Following decades of escalating border skirmishes with the neighboring reptilian empire of the Veskarium, the inhabited worlds of the Mataras System sign the Absalom Pact, uniting under a single governing directorate and empowering The Stewards as system-wide peacekeepers.
  • 317+ AG (Present Day): The modern era of galactic exploration, corporate espionage, and deep-space discovery.
