Origin & The Thousand-Year War
The Formians are the native insectoid civilization of The Colonies, the sprawling southern continent of Castrovel. Evolving in subterranean warrens and volcanic caverns, the formians developed an unshakeable communal intellect: a telepathic hive mind capable of coordinating millions of individuals into a singular, synchronized societal engine.
For millennia before The Gap, formian expansionism brought them into violent, catastrophic conflict with the Lashunta of the northern continent of Asana. To the formians, the individualistic, emotionally volatile lashunta appeared chaotic, dangerous, and inefficient; to the lashunta, the advancing chitinous legions represented an apocalyptic swarm that would devour their independence.
The conflict raged across countless generations in brutal trench warfare, saurian charges, and bio-chemical strikes. However, in 287 AG, progressive scholars from Qabarat and the visionary leadership of the newly crowned Overqueen achieved a historic breakthrough: the signing of the Treaty of Queensrock. Four years later in 291 AG, formians and lashunta stood together as joint founding signatories of the Absalom Pact, permanently cementing their historic peace and opening formian civilization to the wider galaxy.

Anatomy & Caste Physiology
Formians possess an unmistakable, centaur-like anatomy:
- The Six-Legged Carriage: Their lower bodies resemble the abdomen and thorax of a giant ant, supported by six jointed chitinous legs that provide absolute balance across zero-G bulkheads, sheer subterranean walls, and mud-slick jungle floors.
- The Upright Torso: Emerging from the anterior thorax is a humanoid-like upper torso with two multi-jointed arms ending in opposable, four-fingered claws. Their heads feature compound faceted eyes, sweeping sensory antennae, and formidable serrated mandibles.
- The Hive Web (Telepathy): Every formian is born into the Hive Web—an innate, continuous telepathic mesh that links them to their local Queen and, through her, to the Overqueen in Queensrock. This connection does not erase free will, but it provides a profound, calming sense of belonging, instant non-verbal tactical coordination, and seamless data-sharing.
Culture & The Post-Peace Awakening
Since the 287 AG armistice, formian society has undergone a radical cultural renaissance:
- The Rise of the Individual: While ancestral formians were entirely subservient to hive dictates, modern formians have eagerly embraced individual self-expression. Workers and warriors now choose unique personal names, pursue hobbies (such as mechanical customization, painting, or culinary experimentation), and adopt off-world fashions.
- The Kevolari Shipyards: Partnering with the Lashunta, formians established the Kevolari Collective on Castrovel’s industrial moon, Elindrae. Combining formian bio-architectural chitin-weaving with lashunta technomancy, the shipyards produce some of the most resilient, organically self-repairing starships in the Pact Worlds navy.
- Formian Diplomats: Due to their complete lack of personal vanity and flawless mathematical honesty, formian ambassadors are sought after throughout the Pact Council as unbiased corporate arbitrators and treaty negotiators.
Campaign Hooks
- The Severed Hive: A deep-space mining team of formian workers operating in The Diaspora has their local Queen slain by void-corsairs. Disconnected from the Hive Web, the workers panic and barricade themselves inside an ore refinery. The PCs are hired to deliver a synthetic telepathic relay to calm the survivors before corporate strikebreakers storm the facility.
- The Hive-Mind Sabotage: A virulent neuro-toxin developed by anti-treaty lashunta extremists is introduced into a subterranean water duct in Queensrock, threatening to infect the brood chambers and trigger violent madness across the hive. The PCs must track down the terrorists and synthesize an antidote before the peace collapses.
- The Individualist Rebel: A formian warrior stationed on Absalom Station refuses a direct directive from her Queen to return to Castrovel, seeking asylum with the Starfinder Society to pursue a career as a deep-space pilot. The party is caught in the middle of a delicate jurisdictional showdown between formian royal bailiffs and the Society.
