Astrogation Dossier: The Emerald Crucible

Castrovel—revered across astronomical chronicles as The Green Mother—is the second world outward from Mataras and one of the biological crown jewels of the Pact Worlds. Viewed from orbit, the planet is a swirling jewel of emerald canopies, turquoise inland seas, and steaming cloud spirals.

Unlike the mechanical sterility of Aballon or the vacuum surrounding Absalom Station, Castrovel is an explosion of hyper-active life. Its equatorial zones and vast continental interiors are choked with primeval rain forests, carnivorous flora, and colossal saurian megafauna. Yet amid this untamed wilderness thrive three of the oldest, most sophisticated civilizations in known space: the telepathic, scholar-warrior Lashunta; the vast, subterranean hive-mind federation of the Formians; and the ancient, isolationist Elves of Sovyrian.

Planetary Geography & The Four Great Continents

Castrovel’s surface is partitioned into four major landmasses, each exhibiting radically distinct political structures and ecosystems.

1. Asana (The Lashunta Cradle)

The largest continent on Castrovel, Asana is a rolling tapestry of towering rainforests, fertile river deltas, and savanna plateaus. It is the ancestral domain of the Lashunta, who govern from autonomous, matriarchal city-states connected by trade pacts and ancient teleportation gateways.

  • Qabarat (The Jewel of Asana): The most cosmopolitan metropolis on the planet and its premier planetary spaceport. Built upon towering cliffs of gleaming white fossil-shell behind ancient curtain walls, Qabarat is an architectural masterpiece of aerodynamic glass domes, open-air learning forums, and botanical plazas. It houses the Qabarat University of Xenoarchaeology, renowned across the galaxy for analyzing pre-Gap artifacts.
  • Jabaxa & Komena: Martial city-states in southern Asana that served as the frontline bulwarks during the ancient Formian wars, maintaining elite mercenary companies and telepathic academies.
2. The Colonies (The Formian Federation)

Occupying Castrovel’s southern continent, The Colonies are the domain of the insectoid Formians. Beneath the surface of the rolling plains and craggy mountains lies a colossal, planetary-scale warren of subterranean tunnels, nurseries, fungal bio-reactors, and crystalline communication relays.

  • Queensrock: The towering hive-capital and sovereign seat of the Overqueen—the living physical and philosophical nexus of the Formian hive mind. Queensrock rises as an immense, sculpted termite-spire miles into the humid sky, housing millions of workers, warriors, and chitinous diplomats who coordinate with Pact World corporate delegations.
3. Sovyrian (The Elven Sanctuary)

Sovyrian is the ancestral realm of the Elves, who retreated here from lost Golarion in deep antiquity. Unlike the bustling trade hubs of Asana, Sovyrian is notoriously isolationist, xenophobic, and wrapped in powerful arcane warding fields and automated orbital defense grids that turn away unauthorized foreign starships.

  • El: The canal-threaded capital of Sovyrian, constructed from living wood, sculpted quartz crystals, and ancient stone shaped by powerful elven magic. Here, the Sovereign Court preserves unbroken cultural traditions and libraries that predate The Gap. Outsiders (termed chyrs or half-bloods) are strictly barred from entering the interior without express royal dispensations.
4. Ukulam (The Untamed Northern Frontier)

Ukulam is a wild, uncharted northern subcontinent preserved by international planetary treaty as a pristine wilderness sanctuary. The continent is choked with apex megafauna, psychic predators, and toxic moldstorms.

  • Xenowarden Preserves: The ecological protectors known as the Xenowardens maintain cloaked scientific watchtowers throughout Ukulam, studying rapid evolutionary cycles alongside native Khizars—indigenous, humanoid plant-people who navigate via sensory heat-pits and photosynthetic consciousness.
  • Ancient Pre-Gap Ruins: Concealed beneath Ukulam’s impenetrable jungle canopies lie crumbling, overgrown cyclopean ruins from forgotten civilizations that vanished long before human records began.

The Industrial Moon: Elindrae

Castrovel possesses a single natural moon: Elindrae. Airless, heavily cratered, and scarred by extensive strip-mining, Elindrae serves as the planet’s sacrificial industrial basin.

To preserve Castrovel’s pristine, life-giving biospheres from toxic industrial pollution, planetary laws strictly ban heavy orbital manufacturing and smelting on the world’s surface. Consequently, all capital starship drydocks, heavy metal refineries, and hazardous chemical laboratories are stationed on Elindrae. The moon is dominated by the Kevolari Collective, a massive, joint Lashunta-Formian starship manufacturing consortium fabricating hybrid biomechanical vessels.

History: The Great Reconciliation

For countless thousands of years—stretching far back into the unrecorded shadows of The Gap—Castrovel was consumed by the Formian-Lashunta War.

The Eternal Strife

Driven by biological imperatives to colonize and expand, the Formian hive mind pushed relentlessly northward from The Colonies, viewing the Lashunta as fractured, inefficient individualists. In response, the Lashunta forged an ultra-militarized society, developing telepathic battle-screens, shock cavalry riding saurian war-beasts, and heavily fortified redoubts. Countless generations perished in brutal meat-grinder trench wars and jungle skirmishes across the equatorial straits.

The Armistice of 287 AG

The turning point came less than a decade before the formation of the Pact Worlds. Weary of endless slaughter, progressive Lashunta scholar-diplomats and the newly emergent philosophical leadership of the Formian Overqueen entered historic negotiations. In 287 AG, the two mortal enemies signed the Treaty of Queensrock, ending millennia of bloodshed.

Four years later in 291 AG, the Lashunta, Formians, and a reluctant elven delegation jointly signed the Absalom Pact, integrating Castrovel into the Pact Worlds Directorate as a tri-state sovereign power. Today, former battlegrounds have been converted into joint research installations and economic free zones, though cultural friction and generational scars still linger.

Society, Peoples & The Ancient Aiudara

The Inhabitants
  • The Lashunta: An intelligent, naturally telepathic humanoid species displaying extreme genetic dimorphism: the slender, intellectual, and diplomatic Damaya who lead the administrative academies; and the brawny, confrontational, and heavily built Korasha who dominate military defense and exploratory vanguards.
  • The Formians: Semi-humanoid, centaur-like insectoids divided into specialized castes: industrious Workers, formidable Warriors, and fertile Queens. While connected to a local telepathic hive-net, modern Formians have increasingly embraced personal names, individual hobbies, and outside culture since the 287 AG peace.
  • The Elves: Long-lived, tall humanoids who guard their secrets jealousy. While many elves have migrated off-world to Absalom Station and beyond, the Elves of Sovyrian remain staunchly traditional, practicing deep arcane magic and stellar navigation.
The Aiudara (Elf Gates)

Scattered across Castrovel’s continents—and hidden in overgrown groves across other worlds in the Mataras System—are the Aiudara, or Elf Gates. Forged in prehistoric times, these free-standing, arch-shaped stone monoliths act as instantaneous, permanent teleportation portals. When activated with the proper key-sigils or resonant musical chords, an traveler can step through an arch in Qabarat and emerge instantly inside Sovyrian, or even across the vacuum on the lost world’s sister ruins.

Ecological Hazards: Primordial Predators

The wild biomes of Castrovel are among the most lethal in the galaxy:

  • Ksariks: Notorious indigenous quadrupeds capable of absorbing genetic and psychic abilities from their prey via barbed tentacles, firing toxic thorns from dorsal quills.
  • Moldstorms: Rapidly spreading super-colonies of airborne spores that sweep across the jungle canopy, rotting organic matter and corroding synthetic seals within minutes.
  • Saurian Megafauna: Titan-sized reptilian beasts, thunder lizards, and river leviathans that treat standard vehicles as territorial prey.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Stolen Gate Sigil: A rogue splinter faction of Lashunta militants steals an ancient Aiudara activation crystal in Qabarat, planning to open a backdoor assault portal directly into a secure hive-nursery in Queensrock to reignite the ancient war. The PCs must track the terrorists through the neon-lit shell-districts before the gate is triggered.
  • Expedition to the Sleeping Vault: Deep in the uncharted wilderness of Ukulam, a Xenowardens monitoring team vanishes after uncovering a pre-Gap vault radiating immense planar energy. The party is chartered to navigate the lethal jungle, fending off ksarik packs to secure the site.
  • The Moonfall Sabotage: An ecological terror cell sabotages an antimatter containment refinery on Elindrae, threatening to spray radioactive debris across Castrovel’s upper atmosphere. The heroes must conduct a zero-g breach of the orbital foundries to disarm the core.
