Origin & The Great Retreat
The Elves are one of the oldest and most culturally complex humanoid civilizations in the Mataras System. Their ancient history stretches deep into prehistoric antiquity on lost Golarion. When a prehistoric meteor cataclysm threatened to extinguish life on their cradle world, the elven high mages activated the Aiudara—the ancient planetary stone gates—and led their people across the void to safety on the continent of Sovyrian on Castrovel.
For millennia, the elves maintained Sovyrian as a sacred redoubt of arcane research, biological preservation, and star-gazing. When The Gap struck the cosmos and swallowed Golarion itself, the elves of Sovyrian survived relatively unscathed, shielded behind their ancient wards.
Today, while the sovereign elven court on Castrovel remains staunchly isolationist and xenophobic, hundreds of thousands of elves have departed their ancestral forests to walk the neon corridors of Absalom Station, explore the frontiers of The Vast, and captain starships across the currents of The Drift.

Anatomy & Physiology
Elves possess an otherworldly, ethereal beauty:
- Physical Grace: Elves are tall, remarkably slender, and possess elongated limbs and tapered, swept-back ears that grant them acute hearing. Their bones are dense yet lightweight, allowing them to move with total silence across forest loam or metal decking.
- Eyes of the Void: Unlike humans whose eyes feature small circular irises and whites, an elf’s eyes are dominated by colossal, almond-shaped irises that absorb ambient light with startling efficiency. Their eye colors range from brilliant violet, amber, and emerald to deep midnight black.
- The Long View: Because an elf can easily live for seven centuries, their psychological perception of time is radically detached from that of short-lived races. An elf can spend fifty years contemplating a single philosophical problem or perfecting a musical composition without feeling the slightest urgency.
The Cultural Schism: Sovyrian vs. The Forlorn
Elven society in the space age is defined by an agonizing cultural divide:
1. Sovyrian and the Sovereign Court
On Castrovel, the continent of Sovyrian is a closed nation:
- The Capital of El: A canal-laced metropolis sculpted from living darkwood, enchanted crystal, and white marble. The city operates largely without industrial factories or internal combustion, powered entirely by ancient ley-lines and arcane batteries.
- The Anti-Technology Bias: Sovyrian high society views modern mass-market electronics and industrial technology as crude, soulless crutches. They prefer enchanted communication mirrors over dataslates and arcane translocation gates over shuttles.
- Xenophobic Isolation: Non-elves (and even half-elves) are classified as chyrs and are legally barred from traveling into Sovyrian’s interior without an imperial royal pass.
2. The Forlorn
Elves who leave Sovyrian to dwell among the shorter-lived races are colloquially known across the galaxy as The Forlorn:
- The Sorrow of Centuries: Because humans, lashunta, and ysoki live, age, and die in what feels like a fleeting season to an elf, Forlorn spacers inevitably watch multiple generations of beloved friends, spouses, and business partners wither into dust while their own faces remain unlined.
- Melancholic Independence: This emotional burden makes Forlorn elves somewhat detached, cynical, or fiercely driven, often dedicating themselves to dangerous, multi-decade deep-space exploration missions where they can outlast corporate regimes.
Elves and the Dark Kin: The Drow
No discussion of the elven race is complete without their bitter shadow: the Drow of Apostae:
- Separated during pre-Gap antiquity through subterranean isolation and demonic corruption, the drow took an opposite path: embracing ruthless corporate capitalism, fleshwarping xenotech, and cutthroat arms dealing.
- Sovyrian elves regard the drow as a permanent, unforgivable disgrace to their bloodline, maintaining shoot-on-sight defense doctrines against drow vessels approaching Castrovel.
Campaign Hooks
- The Stolen Aiudara Key: An ancient musical tuning fork that acts as the key to a sealed Aiudara gate in Sovyrian is stolen by an art thief on Absalom Station. The Sovereign Court, unwilling to dispatch official troops into foreign space, secretly hires the PCs to track the thief before the gate’s location is leaked to Apostae.
- The Forlorn Inheritance: A wealthy Forlorn elven merchant on Verces passes away, leaving her multi-billion-credit shipping consortium not to her distant family in Sovyrian, but to the PCs—on the condition that they complete her unfulfilled thirty-year exploration voyage into The Vast.
- The Spy in El: A non-elven diplomat is falsely accused of espionage inside the forbidden city of El and sentenced to ritual memory-wiping. The party must orchestrate a daring extraction through the canal-cities before the sentence is carried out.
