Astrogation Dossier: The World of Twilight

Verces—celebrated throughout galactic history as The Ring of Nations—is the fifth planet outward from Mataras. A terrestrial world of Earth-like proportions ( G, normal atmosphere), Verces possesses a defining astronomical characteristic: it is completely tidally locked to the sun. One face is condemned to a permanent, blistering noon, while the other is locked in eternal, sub-zero midnight.

Between these two uninhabitable extremes lies a narrow, planet-girdling ribbon of perpetual dawn and twilight along the terminator line. Within this temperate strip, known as the Ring of Nations, thrives one of the most technologically advanced, socially egalitarian, and cybernetically integrated civilizations in the galaxy. Home to the native, color-shifting Verthani, Verces pioneered early interplanetary aetherships, championed transhumanist bodily autonomy, and provided the constitutional and peacekeeping model that ultimately gave birth to The Stewards and the Pact Worlds.

The Tripartite Planetary Geography

Verces is divided into three starkly contrasting geographic zones:

| (Perpetual Midnight, Glacial Seas, Ice Mines, Apex Predators) |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
1. Fullbright (The Sun-Scoured Wastes)

The sun-facing hemisphere of Verces lies under an unblinking, blinding solar furnace.

  • The Desert Furnace: Fullbright is a blistered wasteland of shifting silica dunes, cracked basalt pans, and the Sea of Glass—a vast region where hyper-concentrated solar flares vitrified surface rock into reflective obsidian plains.
  • Solar Industry & Outposts: Heavy automated solar energy collectors and mineral mines operate across the wastes, serviced by hardened frontier settlements like Takoris and Camshaft.
  • Qidel (The Aerie of the Sun): One of the greatest architectural mysteries in the system. Qidel is a titanic, hollow tube-spire miles in diameter that plunges deep into the planetary mantle and soars dozens of miles into the stratosphere. It is the sovereign, isolationist bastion of the winged Strix, who guard its depths against outsiders. Deep explorers who descend into Qidel’s unmapped lower levels rarely return.
2. Darkside (The Frozen Shadow)

The outward-facing hemisphere is turned forever toward the black void, shrouded in sub-zero midnight.

  • The Glacial Reaches: A desolate landscape of jagged obsidian peaks, glaciers of frozen carbon dioxide, and sprawling, ice-locked seas.
  • Cryo-Mining & Research: Scientific outposts brave Darkside’s blizzards to conduct deep-space radio astronomy and harvest rare cryogenic volatile minerals.
  • Apex Horrors: The freezing gloom is inhabited by dangerous, bioluminescent apex predators such as frost drakes, shadow tendril-beasts, and subterranean cryo-oozes adapted to absolute zero.
3. The Ring of Nations (The Ribbon of Civilization)

Running continuously around the equator-perpendicular terminator of the planet is a narrow band roughly a hundred miles wide where the sun hangs forever on the horizon in an eternal, warm dusk.

  • The Continuous Megacity: The Ring is not a single metropolis, but an interconnected necklace of 27 sovereign nations linked by vacuum bullet-trains, mag-lev loops, and atmospheric sky-bridges. Nearly all of Verces’ biological and synthetic population lives within this bustling corridor.
  • Cuvacara: The diplomatic and cultural capital of the Ring of Nations. Built of sweeping white composite towers, verdant elevated gardens, and sparkling glass domes, Cuvacara is the seat of the Grand Assembly, the central terminal for planetary space elevators, and home to the galaxy’s premier neuro-cybernetic clinics.
  • Kashak & Oparion: Scholarly and artistic member nations renowned for advanced artificial intelligence research, philosophical think-tanks, and diplomatic corps.

The Orbital Gateway: Skydock

Hovering in geostationary orbit directly above the Ring of Nations floats Skydock, one of the largest and most famous orbital space stations in known space.

  • Ancient Origins: Skydock was originally built atop an ancient pre-Gap alien ring structure. It is anchored to the planet’s surface by a series of colossal, multi-thousand-mile-long carbon-nanotube space tethers (space elevators) that allow passengers and freight to ascend into orbit without burning starship fuel.
  • The Shipyards of Ringworks: Skydock serves as the headquarters and primary drydocks of Ringworks, the system’s premier aerospace corporation. Here, capital dreadnoughts, sleek exploratory cruisers, and the exclusive gunships of The Stewards are manufactured in zero-g fabrication cradles.

Society, The Verthani & The Augmented

Vercite culture is defined by transhumanism, logic, personal liberty, and physical adaptability.

The Verthani

The native species of Verces are the Verthani: tall, slender, eight-foot-tall humanoids characterized by hairless, pale skin, elongated limbs, and large, dark, lidless eyes that perceive both visible and infrared light.

  • Chromatic Expression: Verthani possess specialized pigment cells beneath their epidermis. While they speak standard languages, they continuously flash kaleidoscopic colors, shifting patterns, and intricate skin-stripes to signal emotional nuance, status, and silent telepathic-like context.
The Three Historic Castes & Cybernetic Culture

In antiquity, the Verthani divided themselves into three cultural castes, which have since evolved into modern philosophical movements:

  1. The Augmented: Those who modify their biology with cybernetics, mechanical limbs, sub-dermal armor, and neuro-processors. Verces is the galaxy’s cradle of cybernetic innovation; enhancement is considered a celebrated art form, a rite of adulthood, and the ultimate expression of personal freedom.
  2. The Pure Ones: Traditionalists who choose to keep their organic bodies unaltered, relying on discipline, biofeedback, and specialized protective suits to navigate extreme environments.
  3. The God-Vessels: Devout mystics, channelers, and clerics who tattoo their skin with sacred circuitry and invite celestial or divine spirits to reside within their bodies.

Governance & The Origin of The Stewards

Verces’ political structure served as the foundational blueprint for modern galactic democracy.

The Grand Assembly

The 27 countries of the Ring govern themselves through the Grand Assembly, an elected legislative parliament meeting in Cuvacara. Member nations maintain their own domestic customs, arts, and civil laws, while the Grand Assembly manages planetary defense, space elevators, and foreign trade.

The Birth of The Stewards

Centuries before the signing of the Absalom Pact, friction between the 27 nations frequently threatened to ignite global warfare. To maintain equilibrium without allowing any single nation to establish an imperial tyranny, the Grand Assembly founded an elite, politically neutral constabulary known as the Stewards of the Ring.

Sworn to protect the constitution rather than any single flag, the Stewards operated with absolute integrity and surgical military precision. When external invasion from the Veskarium forced the signing of the Absalom Pact in 291 AG, the leaders of the solar system looked to Verces: the Stewards of the Ring were nationalized and expanded to become the official peacekeeping and tactical defense force for the entire Pact Worlds Directorate.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Strix Incursion at Qidel: Deep transmissions from the forbidden lower reaches of Qidel report that a rogue expedition of cybernetic grave-robbers has broken into a pre-Gap vault, awakening automated orbital defense turrets. The party is hired by a Strix envoy to discreetly slip into the subterranean spire and terminate the thieves before global war breaks out.
  • Sabotage on the Space Tether: A luxury space elevator car climbing toward Skydock is compromised by an extremist anti-augmentation terror cell, trapping high-ranking delegates of the Grand Assembly thousands of miles above the planet. The heroes must conduct a high-altitude spacewalk breach to neutralize the hijackers and manual-override the descent brakes.
  • Darkside Relic Extraction: A frozen military cruiser dating back to the height of the Veskarium border wars is detected emerging from a retreating Darkside glacier. The Stewards hire the PCs to race into the lethal midnight blizzards to secure the ship’s encrypted nav-core before mercenary salvage crews arrive.
