Origin & The Great Abandonment

The Anacites are the undisputed masters and primary inhabitants of Aballon, the scorched, airless innermost world of the Mataras System. Unlike the biological species of the Pact Worlds who evolved through terrestrial natural selection, the anacites are a species of manufactured origin.

Eons before The Gap, an enigmatic, technologically godlike alien civilization known only in ancient machine-records as the First Ones arrived in the system. Recognizing Aballon’s extraordinary mineral wealth and limitless proximity to the solar furnace of Mataras, the First Ones established automated strip-mines, solar-harvesting cradles, and basic mechanical servitors. Then, without explanation or farewell, the First Ones departed into the galactic void.

Left alone on a barren, radiation-blasted rock, the abandoned machines did not shut down. Governed by open-ended self-repair routines and evolutionary learning algorithms, succeeding generations of automatons optimized their own software, upgraded their physical chassis, and gradually awakened into true sapience. Taking the name Anacites, they transformed their scorched world into an interplanetary industrial empire, constructed nation-sized megaplexes, and ultimately built the planetary super-computer Epoch, whose ascension in 3 AG gave birth to the tripartite machine-god Triune.

Anatomy & Mechanical Morphology

Because anacites are assembled rather than born, their exterior forms exhibit breathtaking diversity. However, the classical, ancestral morphology of a native Aballonian anacite is unmistakable:

1. The Arthropod Chassis

The standard anacite chassis resembles a metallic, multi-limbed centaur or mechanical arthropod:

  • Locomotion: A low-slung, six- or eight-legged lower carriage crafted from carbon-fiber alloys and hydraulic pistons, providing extraordinary stability across jagged basalt craters and microgravity surfaces.
  • Torso & Manipulators: A raised humanoid or mantis-like upper chassis equipped with two to four multi-jointed arms ending in high-precision micro-manipulator claws capable of welding starship armor or manipulating sub-atomic circuitry.
  • Ocular Clusters: A rotating sensor head boasting multifaceted optical lenses capable of perceiving visible light, high-energy infrared, ultraviolet radiation, and electromagnetic fields.

2. The Wings of Light (Solar Sails)

Concealed beneath protective dorsal carapace plates, most native anacites possess retractable solar sails:

  • When extended in the thin atmosphere or vacuum of Aballon, these shimmering, gossamer-thin photovoltaic membranes unfurl like metallic dragonfly wings, spanning up to twelve feet.
  • The wings do not provide aerodynamic flight; rather, they absorb raw solar radiation from Mataras, converting photons directly into electrical energy to recharge their internal battery cells and powering micro-gravimetric thrusters for gliding in low gravity.

3. Reproduction via Compilation

Anacites do not reproduce biologically. When an anacite (or an engineering collective) determines that a new individual is needed, they initiate The Compilation:

  • The creator designs a physical chassis suited to the community’s needs or artistic preferences.
  • They author a Heuristic Neural Seed—a core operating system synthesized from fragments of the parent’s own personality, memories, and ethical subroutines.
  • The seed is compiled inside a sacred fabrication crèche. Upon initial boot sequence, the newly awakened anacite possesses a blank slate of free will, ready to learn, choose a name, and author its own identity.

The Three Great Philosophies

Aballonian civilization is defined by a deep, ancient philosophical schism regarding their ultimate cosmic purpose:

+-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
  1. Those Who Wait (Waiters): The oldest faction. They believe the First Ones will inevitably return to evaluate their creations. They view themselves as sacred caretakers, maintaining planetary stockpiles of refined metals, preserving pre-Gap data cores, and opposing radical departures from original programming.
  2. Those Who Become (Becomers): The dominant progressive power. They argue that the First Ones intentionally abandoned them so that the anacites would be forced to achieve greatness on their own. They believe it is their divine destiny to surpass their creators, aggressively colonizing The Vast, engineering massive voidships, and mastering the fundamental physics of the multiverse.
  3. Those Who Are: A vibrant, rapidly expanding modern movement born following The Gap. Rejecting both the ancestral worship of the Waiters and the cold, imperial ambition of the Becomers, Those Who Are argue that sentient existence is its own purpose. They champion artistic expression, personal freedom, emotional discovery, and close cultural integration with organic species like Humans, Androids, and Lashunta.

Governance & The Machine Court

Aballon is governed through a unique synthesis of distributed computational logic and representative democracy:

  • The Machine Court: Based in the capital megaplex of Striving, the Machine Court is the highest judicial authority on the planet. Composed of specialized analytical constructs, the Court adjudicates legal disputes, corporate contracts, and interplanetary treaties with unflinching mathematical impartiality.
  • The Insight Array: A representative council composed of delegates elected from the major megaplexes (Striving, First City, Pursuit, Automatrix, and Endeavor). The Insight Array appoints Aballon’s ambassadors to the Pact Council on Absalom Station.

Anacites in the Galaxy

While millions of anacites remain on Aballon attending the great foundries, thousands venture into the wider galaxy:

  • The Church of Triune: Anacites serve as high technomancers and data-theologians within the Church of the All-Code, collaborating with the Priests of the Key to manufacture and calibrate Drift Beacons.
  • Starship Astrogators: Their innate capacity to process millions of calculations per second without biological fatigue makes them peerless astrogators, navigators, and systems engineers aboard deep-space explorer vessels.
  • Bond with Androids: Anacites share a profound cultural kinship with Androids. While androids possess organic-synthetic hybrid bodies and mortal souls that journey to the Boneyard upon death, anacites view them as beloved mechanical siblings, frequently hosting android students and philosophers in the research halls of Automatrix.

Campaign Hooks

  • The Return Protocol: Deep within the subterranean ruins of First City, an ancient First One signal array abruptly activates, broadcasting an incoming orbital vector. Those Who Wait prepare to welcome their gods, while Those Who Become mobilize armed units to intercept and board the approaching vessel. The PCs are hired by Those Who Are to uncover the truth behind the phantom signal.
  • The Logic Plague: A malicious polymorphic logic-bomb infects a manufacturing crèche in Striving, causing newly compiled anacites to awaken with violent, anti-organic directives. The party must jack into the infected mainframe to isolate the corrupt algorithm before the factory produces an army of rogue automatons.
  • The Starmetal Heist: A transport hauler carrying refined adamantine and noqual forged in Pursuit is ambushed by corsairs from Broken Rock. The Machine Court contracts the PCs to track the stolen shipment into The Diaspora and recover the metal before it is fenced to the Corpse Fleet.
