Overview: The Genesis of Silicon

If Striving is the vibrant, evolving future of Aballon, First City is its sacred, unyielding past. Situated in a colossal, ancient impact basin in the northern hemisphere, First City was built around the exact geographical coordinates where the mysterious spacefaring entities known as the First Ones first touched down on Aballon eons before The Gap.

It was here that the First Ones planted the planet’s first automated mineral extraction cradles and assembled the rudimentary mechanical servitors that would eventually awaken as the Anacites. While centuries of technological progress transformed the rest of the planet into the glittering, hyper-connected megaplexes of Striving and Pursuit, First City has been meticulously preserved as an architectural and spiritual reliquary.

The city is the undisputed global headquarters of the conservative anacite faction known as Those Who Wait. To walk the silent, unpressurized obsidian causeways of First City is to step into a machine temple: ancient, non-functional First One mining pylons rise like monolithic obelisks toward the sun, guarded by stoic, multi-limbed constructs who have maintained their vigil across uncounted centuries.

Landmarks & Ancient Reliquaries

1. The Genesis Spire

A titanic, jagged pylon composed of an unidentified, non-magnetic black alloy:

  • Believed to be the command core and transmission relay left behind by the First Ones before their departure.
  • Its surface is entirely free of corrosion or solar pitting despite millions of years of exposure to coronal flares.
  • The spire occasionally emits high-frequency sub-space pulses into the galactic rim—signals that Those Who Wait interpret as diagnostic pings confirming that their masters will one day return.
2. The Hall of the First Assembler

The literal cradle of the anacite species:

  • Houses the deactivated chassis of “Unit Zero”—the very first automaton to achieve heuristic self-awareness following the departure of the creators.
  • Preserved in a zero-gravity stasis chamber, Unit Zero is venerated with solemn, mathematical reverence by visiting constructs.
3. The Tithe Vaults

A sprawling network of subterranean storage catacombs plunging thirty miles into the Aballonian mantle:

  • Since the Great Abandonment, Those Who Wait have faithfully gathered, refined, and stored trillions of metric tons of pure titanium, adamantine, noqual, and rare-earth ingots.
  • The vaults are locked behind multi-layered encryption protocols, intended to be presented to the First Ones upon their arrival as proof of anacite fidelity and labor.
4. The Silent Craters

Concentric rings of basalt craters surrounding the city:

  • Free of commercial traffic, manufacturing noise, or wireless transmission clutter.
  • Anacite monks and philosophers rest motionless along the crater rims for months at a time, entering low-power diagnostic states to contemplate their creators’ design.

Society & Religious Orthodoxy

First City is governed strictly according to the Protocols of the Return:

  • Biological Restrictions: Unlike Striving, First City contains no pressurized atmospheric enclaves or “Theology Channels.” Organic visitors—including scholars from the Starfinder Society or emissaries from The Stewards—must bring fully self-contained environmental exosuits, oxygen scrubbers, and radiation dampeners.
  • The Schism with Becomers: Relations between First City and progressive anacite settlements like Pursuit are polite but deeply strained. The Council of the First Return views the expansionist philosophy of Those Who Become as dangerous arrogance, warning that colonizing other stars or declaring godhood will bring divine judgment upon the machine-born.

Campaign Hooks

  • The Spire Awakes: The Genesis Spire abruptly ceases its passive monitoring routines and begins broadcasting a countdown sequence in an unknown, ancient mathematical cipher. The Council of the First Return hires the PCs (as impartial off-worlders) to inspect the subterranean data conduits and determine whether the countdown heralds the First Ones’ return or an automated self-destruct cycle.
  • The Vault Infiltration: A syndicate of void-corsairs allied with outlaws on Broken Rock attempts a daring subterranean heist against the Tithe Vaults to steal thousands of tons of refined adamantine. The PCs are contracted by the Council to track the thieves through the lightless lower catacombs.
  • The Heretic Fragment: An anacite archaeologist discovers a pre-Gap datapad in the outskirts of First City suggesting that the First Ones did not leave voluntarily, but were exterminated by a primordial cosmic menace. The PCs must protect the researcher from conservative inquisitors determined to suppress the heretical truth.
