Overview & History

Adrift within the dense, tumbling debris field of The Diaspora, Broken Rock is the notorious, undisputed capital of systemic piracy in the Pact Worlds. Long before the rise of the Free Captains, the rock was an exceptionally dense, mineral-rich asteroid claimed during the Gap by automated corporate dredges and dwarf-led mining consortia. Over centuries of aggressive extraction, strip-mining operations hollowed out the asteroid’s core, scooping out millions of cubic yards of rare metals until only a colossal, honeycombed nickel-iron carapace remained.

When corporate investors abandoned the depleted shell as economically non-viable, outlaw spacers, mutineers, and anti-Pact radicals slipped into the vacuum caverns. Recognizing its natural defensive geometry—an exterior hull capable of shrugging off spinal-mount railgun fire and an interior sheltered from sensor sweeps—the corsairs fortified the cavernous shafts. Over the decades, Broken Rock evolved into a thriving, lawless metropolis: a haven where stolen starships are stripped for salvage, hot cargo is laundered through anonymous syndicates, and the writ of The Stewards is met with point-blank flak cannon batteries.

Layout & Districts

The entirety of Broken Rock is contained within the hollow interior of the asteroid, illuminated by neon docking beacons, sodium-vapor strip lighting, and bioluminescent algae lamps strung between gantries.

1. The Jaw Gates (Exterior Perimeter)

Ingress to Broken Rock is guarded by the Jaw Gates—massive blast doors retrofitted from ancient planetary excavator bulkheads. The exterior hull is bristling with concealed point-defense lasers, flak arrays, and magnetic rail batteries salvaged from military wrecks.

  • Starships approaching without broadcasting the correct daily algorithmic clearance code (purchased through fences in the Diaspora or granted by a Free Captain commodore) are challenged by automated perimeter weapons.
  • Legitimate law enforcement vessels belonging to The Stewards or the Pact Worlds navy are fired upon on sight without warning.

2. The Docking Tiers & Chop-Shops

Immediately beyond the airlocks lie several concentric tiers of zero-gravity starship slips and drydock cranes. Here, dozens of corsair corvettes, armed bulk freighters, and stealth sloops rest in magnetic mooring cradles.

  • The Keel-Breakers: Specialized engineering bays where captured merchant vessels from AbadarCorp or the Veskarium have their transponder arrays wiped, weapon hardpoints re-welded, and hull silhouettes radically altered before resale.
  • The Scrappers’ Drift: A low-gravity debris zone within the main hangar where stripped plating and unidentifiable reactor components are traded by Ysoki junk-bosses.

3. The Neon Hollow (The Inhabited Rim)

Clinging to the inner curved walls of the asteroid is the commercial and residential heart of the haven. Centrifugal spin sections provide roughly of artificial gravity, though free-floating districts drift in zero gravity toward the center.

  • Corsair Cantinas & Dens: The streets are a roaring maze of drinking holes, synthetic narcotic parlors, and high-stakes gambling dens where spacers wager starship fuel and plunder. Notable among these is The Drifting Hull, a tavern built entirely within the upturned command deck of a sunken corporate cruiser.
  • Fences’ Alley: A discreet, heavily guarded marketplace where specialized shadow brokers purchase hot cargo—quantum encryption keys, military weaponry, refined adamantine, and contraband tech—no questions asked.

4. The Dueling Rings (The Blood Cages)

Justice in Broken Rock is personal, brutal, and swift. In accordance with the Code of Asteroids, violent grievances between crewmates, rival captains, or swindled merchants cannot be waged in the crowded corridors where stray shots might breach an atmospheric pipe.

  • Instead, disputes are formally settled inside The Dueling Rings: wire-mesh spheres suspended in zero gravity. Combatants enter with paired blades or calibrated low-yield shock weapons, fighting until first blood, submission, or death while spectators hang from surrounding catwalks wagering fortunes on the outcome.

5. The Obsidian Roost & The Council Spire

Hovering in the microgravity core of the asteroid, anchored by heavy titanium stabilizer cables, hangs The Obsidian Roost—a fortress fabricated from polished black blast-shielding.

  • This redoubt serves as the official meeting hall of the Pirate Council. Here, the most powerful Free Captain fleet commanders gather to apportion raiding territories, arbitrate inter-fleet wars, and debate systemic diplomacy.
  • At the center of the council chamber sits the Anchor Throne, constructed from the melted slag of a dozen captured naval flagships, where the reigning Pirate King or Queen presides.

Governance: The Pirate Council & The Code

Broken Rock recognizes no planetary charter, no corporate law, and no decree of the Pact Council. Its society functions solely under the Code of Asteroids:

  1. Freedom of the Berth: Any captain who flies under the Free Captain colors and respects the haven’s internal peace may dock, refuel, and conduct trade unmolested.
  2. The Sanction of Blood: Weapons fire within the commercial concourses without council authorization carries a sentence of forfeiture of cargo, exile, or “walking the burn”—being spaced through the primary exhaust vent without a suit.
  3. The Common Defense: If an external imperial power—such as the Veskarium, the Corpse Fleet, or a crusading fleet of The Stewards—invades the Diaspora, all private squabbles cease, and every armed vessel within Broken Rock is pledged to the collective defense under the command of the Pirate King.

Notable Figures of Broken Rock

  • The Pirate King / Queen: The supreme arbiter of the Free Captain Council. The throne is currently held through a delicate, razor-thin coalition of dreadnought captains who maintain order through ruthless charisma and overwhelming personal firepower.
  • Commodore Corval Void-Hand: A cybernetically reconstructed Human former naval officer turned corsair kingpin who controls three of the largest drydock berths and operates the most lucrative ship-refitting syndicate in the belt.
  • Kestrel Red-Tide: A flamboyant Ysoki data-slicer and information fence whose web of listening bugs throughout the haven catches wind of corporate transport schedules long before they leave Absalom Station.
  • Sister Maltha: A fanatical priestess of Besmara who maintains the Shrine of the Barnacle King, a floating chapel composed of fused hull fragments where captains sacrifice a tithe of their plunder to ensure safe passage through the Drift.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Infiltrator’s Gambit: The Stewards hire the PCs to slip into Broken Rock under the guise of disgraced freelance smugglers. Their mission is to locate a stolen military prototype hyperdrive before it is auctioned off to foreign buyers in the Neon Hollow.
  • Trial by the Ring: After a deal with an unscrupulous fence goes sour, the party’s pilot is framed for an illegal murder in the docks. To clear the crew’s name and prevent their starship from being impounded, the party’s champion must enter the zero-g Dueling Rings against a notorious four-armed gladiator.
  • Mutiny on the High Belt: A radical splinter faction of the Free Captains has allied with agents of the Corpse Fleet, smuggling unholy bio-toxins into the haven’s water reservoirs to overthrow the Pirate Council. The PCs must ally with moderate corsairs to prevent the fortress from falling to the undead.
