Origin & The Cosmic Cataclysm
The Sarcesians are the only native, sapient biological survivors of the ancient sister worlds Damiar and Iovo—terrestrial paradises that once occupied the sixth orbital band of the Mataras System.
During the pre-Gap antiquity of the system, a catastrophic war erupted between the imperial rulers of Eox and the peoples of the Twins. In a final act of scorched-earth desperation, the necromancers of Eox detonated the apocalyptic superweapon known as the Death Wail. The resulting gravitational detonation pulverized Damiar and hurled its fragments across millions of miles, while Iovo was torn from conventional reality.
Cast adrift upon the tumbling wreckage that became The Diaspora, the surviving Sarcesians underwent rapid metabolic adaptation—accelerated by ancient planetary terraforming fields and primal cosmic radiation—transforming into a species uniquely evolved to thrive in the hard vacuum of deep space.

Anatomy & Physiology
Standing between ten and fifteen feet tall, a Sarcesian presents an arresting silhouette. Their bodies are remarkably lean, supported by a lightweight, honeycombed skeletal matrix that allows them to move with surprising grace despite their towering stature.
1. Void Adaptation & Vacuum Metabolism
Unlike almost all other biological humanoids in the Pact Worlds, a Sarcesian does not require an environmental spacesuit or pressurized helmet to survive in the void:
- Cellular Sealing: Upon stepping into hard vacuum, a Sarcesian’s skin instantly tightens and seals its pores, forming an impermeable organic barrier against explosive decompression, moisture evaporation, and cosmic radiation.
- Internal Oxygen Reserves: Specialized secondary lungs and circulatory gas-sacs store pressurized oxygen reserves synthesized from their metabolism. A Sarcesian can operate in absolute vacuum without breathing external air for up to 1 hour per point of Constitution modifier (typically 2 to 4 hours) before needing to rest in an atmospheric pocket.
2. The Wings of Light (Solar Sailing)
The most celebrated trait of the Sarcesian form is their ability to fly through the void without artificial propulsion:
- Running along their spine are clusters of specialized photomorphic glandular nodes known as lumen organs. When mentally activated in microgravity or vacuum, these organs unfurl magnificent, translucent wings composed of pure, coherent photons and localized magnetic fields.
- These wings span up to thirty feet across, glowing with iridescent amber, azure, or violet radiance. By angling these energy sails against the solar winds radiating from Mataras, a Sarcesian can tack, glide, and accelerate silently between asteroids without fuel, thrusters, or reaction mass.
- Planetary Limitation: Because these wings are formed of pure light and magnetic flux rather than physical aerodynamic lift, they function only in zero- or micro-gravity () and hard vacuum. Under standard planetary gravity () or inside thick atmospheres, the wings cannot sustain flight.
Culture & Society
Sarcesian civilization is deeply contemplative, decentralized, and fiercely protective of personal autonomy. Having witnessed the total destruction of their physical homeworld, they hold little reverence for monumental architecture or permanent territorial empires.
1. The Crag Communes
Rather than gathering in dense planetary cities, Sarcesians live in extended family clans stationed on isolated, hollowed-out asteroids known as crags:
- A typical crag consists of a porous stone asteroid stabilized by small magnetic anchors, containing terraced gardens of void-moss, lichen, and solar kelp cultivated beneath paper-thin force bubbles.
- Water is harvested through meticulous ice-mining of passing comets and micro-meteors. Waste is completely recycled; to waste water or organic matter on a crag is considered a grave cultural sacrilege.
2. The Long Rifles & Marksmanship
Because crag communes are small, isolated, and separated by tens of thousands of miles of open vacuum, Sarcesians cannot rely on large standing armies to repel predatory claim-jumpers, corporate raiders, or the marauding Free Captains. Instead, they developed a military doctrine centered around extreme-range kinetic sniper marksmanship:
- The Sarcesian Sniper Rifle: Custom-machined, oversized heavy projectile rifles measuring seven to nine feet in length, engineered to fire dense, micro-stabilized tungsten-alloy rounds.
- The Fifty-Mile Shot: Utilizing their nocturnal vision, innate understanding of orbital mechanics, and microgravity ballistics, trained Sarcesian marksmen can anchor themselves to a crag’s rim, factor in gravitational drift across multiple asteroids, and eliminate hostile starship sensors, weapon turrets, or individual boarding pilots from tens of miles away across open vacuum before an enemy even registers their presence on radar.
3. Relations with The River Between
Sarcesians share a profound, almost spiritual bond with The River Between. They view the freshwater void-current as the living circulatory system of their shattered mother-world, Damiar. Family clans frequently maintain seasonal fishing camps along the river’s reed-lined banks, serving as volunteer river-wardens who defend the current against illegal industrial siphoning by AbadarCorp or rogue corsairs.
Role in the Pact Worlds
Technically, the Sarcesians of the Diaspora hold a recognized seat on the Pact Council on Absalom Station. In practice, Sarcesian elders find station politics and corporate bureaucratic squabbling utterly exhausting.
- The Solitary Emissaries: Delegates sent to represent the Diaspora frequently treat their tenure as an exile, voting strictly to preserve the legal sovereignty of the asteroid belt, block corporate claim-jumping laws, and preserve the rights of independent spacers.
- Systemic Mercenaries & Explorers: Young Sarcesians driven by curiosity often venture beyond the belt, finding lucrative employment as deep-space scouts, starship astrogators, planetary survey snipers, and environmental wardens for the Xenowardens.
Campaign & Adventure Hooks
- The Broken Covenant: A mining conglomerate from Verces has begun strip-blasting an ancestral Sarcesian crag claimed to hold deep veins of adamantine. The commune’s elder hires the PCs to negotiate a ceasefire—or covertly disable the corporate excavator’s power grid before the commune’s snipers open fire and ignite an interplanetary war.
- The Starlight Run: A young Sarcesian solar-flyer participating in the traditional coming-of-age migration between the Diaspora and The River Between has vanished. The PCs discover the youth was ambushed by a black-market medical syndicate seeking to harvest their spinal lumen organs for cybernetic enhancement research.
- Sniper in the Dark: A notorious pirate warlord on Broken Rock has placed a massive bounty on the head of a mysterious Sarcesian sniper who has single-handedly crippled four corsair raiders attempting to prey on dwarven ice-barges.
