Overview & Metaphysical Origin

Among the countless wonders of the Pact Worlds, The River Between is widely considered one of the most breathtaking anomalies in known space. Drifting through the silent, frozen vacuum of The Diaspora, it is literally a river flowing through the stars: an unbroken, uncapped ribbon of crystalline freshwater and breathable air that weaves between hundreds of tumbling micro-asteroids without freezing solid, boiling away, or dispersing into the void.

Astrogators and magical scholars trace its origin back to the pre-Gap cataclysm that destroyed the twin planets Damiar and Iovo. When the apocalyptic Death Wail fired from Eox shattered the worlds, ancient elemental engines and colossal planetary terraforming reservoirs on Damiar ruptured simultaneously. Rather than evaporating into the hard vacuum, an immense planar tear to the Elemental Plane of Water anchored itself to the planetary remnants. Bound by residual gravity lattices, ancient water-elemental spirits, and forgotten planetary wards, the escaping seas coalesced into a continuous, flowing highway connecting the shattered planetoids.

Environmental Dynamics & Physics

The physics of The River Between defy standard planetary science, operating under a harmonious blend of gravitational tethering and elemental enchantment:

1. The Atmospheric Envelope

Extending roughly sixty feet above the water’s surface is a continuous, cylindrical aura of temperate, breathable air (approximately / ).

  • Spacers can step directly off the hull of a starship, breach the outer boundary membrane, and breathe without spacesuits or filtration masks.
  • The transition between hard vacuum and the river’s atmosphere is marked by a shimmering iridescent barrier—resembling soap-film—that prevents atmospheric decompression.

2. Centripetal Gravity & Water Flow

Gravity along the river does not pull “down” toward an underlying celestial body; instead, it pulls radially inward toward the center of the water channel ().

  • A swimmer or vessel remains securely pinned to the surface regardless of the river’s twisting loops or spirals through space.
  • The current flows at a steady pace of approximately 4 to 8 knots, driven by elemental pressure gradients emanating from hidden planar fonts.

3. Solar Radiation & Illumination

Because the river weaves through open space, it receives unfiltered light from the distant star Mataras.

  • Dense, luminescent void-algae and floating beds of broad-leafed solar kelp drift along the edges, absorbing cosmic radiation and generating oxygen through hyper-accelerated photosynthesis.
  • At night—when large asteroids eclipse the sun—the water glows with vibrant turquoise bioluminescence, illuminating the riverway like an emerald serpent coiling through the dark.

Because starship thrusters can scorch the delicate biological lining of the river and boil its waters, flying powered vessels directly through the stream is strictly forbidden by universal consensus among spacers. Instead, transit along the river relies on ancient and low-impact methods:

1. River-Skiffs & Paddle-Barges

Pilgrims, traders, and locals travel the river aboard specially designed launches, glass-bottomed catamarans, and solar-paddle barges.

  • Travelers glide downstream past micro-asteroids overgrown with moss, orchids, and weeping willows whose roots dangle directly into the void-stream.
  • Moorings consist of wooden docks and brass mooring bollards bolted into porous asteroid stone.

2. River-Side Habitats & Waystations

  • The Cataract Markets: Clustered around a series of low-gravity water-chutes where the river cascades between three closely orbiting rocks, this bustling trade bazaar is famous for zero-gravity river-fish, fresh produce, water-wine, and medicinal kelp.
  • The Reed Eyries: High crags hovering along the riverbanks inhabited by Sarcesians. These void-flyers land on the water’s surface like gigantic herons to fish with tridents or trade fresh cometary ice to replenish the river’s volume.
  • The Hermitage of the Current: An ancient monastery built into a hollowed limestone asteroid, where mystics of Ibra and nature-priests meditate on the river’s fluid trajectory as a living metaphor for destiny.

Ecological & Economic Significance

1. The Water Trade

Water is life in the void. Throughout The Diaspora, clean, potable water is one of the most heavily commodified resources in the Pact Worlds.

  • While predatory mining corporations and the Free Captains constantly attempt to siphon large tankers of water from the river, local river communes and Sarcesian snipers fiercely defend the current from industrial exploitation.
  • Regulated harvesting rights are granted only to small-scale independent water-miners who pay tribute to the river’s upkeep.

2. Rare Flora & Fauna

Centuries of exposure to elemental planar energies have bred unique life forms along the current:

  • Glass Fins: Translucent, trout-like fish whose scales can be harvested for optical circuitry and crystalline jewelry.
  • Void Lilies: Gigantic floating water lilies that unfurl vacuum-hardened petals into the space beyond the atmospheric envelope, absorbing solar winds.
  • River Sprites: Small, inquisitive water-fey that hitch rides on passing boats, trading navigational secrets for polished trinkets or fruit.

Hazards & Mysteries

  • The Sinks (Planar Whirlpools): Occasional fluctuations in the planar rift generate violent vortices that can drag river-skiffs beneath the surface. Legends tell of vessels sucked into these sinks that emerged unharmed in the boundless oceans of the Elemental Plane of Water.
  • Void Pirates & Siphoners: Renegade Free Captains occasionally dock stealth corvettes just outside the atmospheric envelope, lowering armored siphon hoses to steal millions of gallons of water, sparking deadly skirmishes with local river-wardens.
  • Sunken Damiar Vaults: Embedded in the bedrock along the riverbed are shattered spires and sealed laboratories from lost Damiar. Underwater salvage divers frequently brave submerged security constructs to recover pre-Gap relics, terraforming chips, and ancient cultural treasures.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Siphon Siege: A ruthless mining baron from AbadarCorp has established an illegal fortified extraction pump on a keystone asteroid, causing the downstream river to shrink and dry out. The PCs are hired by Sarcesian river-wardens to disable the pump array without causing an ecological catastrophe.
  • The Sunken Vault of Damiar: A sudden shift in the river’s course exposes the entrance to a pristine pre-Gap elemental observatory submerged under forty feet of current. The party must dive the ruins to retrieve an ancient navigational star-map before a rival team of Free Captains salvagers claims it.
  • Murder on the Celestial Barge: While traveling aboard a luxury paddle-steamer down the River Between, an influential Pact Council diplomat is assassinated. With the ship floating through the void and the killer trapped within the atmospheric envelope, the PCs must solve the crime before the vessel docks at the Cataract Markets.
