Divine Portfolio & Philosophy
Besmara, known across the sea-lanes of antiquity and the star-routes of the modern era as The Pirate Queen, is the patron divinity of plunderers, privateers, and outlaws. Unlike deities who champion grand cosmic orders, ideological crusades, or deep technological ascension, Besmara cares only for three simple truths: freedom, fortune, and the thrill of the chase.
Besmara does not seek the conquest of solar systems or the subjugation of mortal populations. She is the chaotic spark of defiance against planetary empires, corporate monopolies, and naval tyrannies. To her followers, authority is an illusion meant to be shattered, laws are shackles forged by the weak, and the riches of the universe belong solely to those bold enough to seize them by cannon and cutlass.

The Void Adaptation: From Sea to Stars
Before the Gap on Lost Golarion, Besmara was a goddess of terrestrial oceans, wooden galleons, and sea storms. When the Gap receded and mortal spacers took to the stars, the Pirate Queen effortlessly translated her domain to the boundless black ocean of the cosmos:
- The Great Black Ocean: To a Besmaran spacer, the vacuum of space is merely an infinite sea, gravitational wells are tides and shoals, planetary rings are reefs, and the solar winds are the breath of the goddess herself.
- The Drift Galleon: Legends among spacers tell of The Black Galleon, Besmara’s personal flagship—a kilometers-long ghost dreadnought carved from spectral darkwood and hull plating stripped from a thousand conquered flagships. She is said to sail the turbulent currents of the Drift, boarding corporate luxury liners and leaving behind only bewildered crews and empty vaults.
Worship & Shrines in the Diaspora
Nowhere in the Pact Worlds is the worship of Besmara more fervent, visible, and rowdy than within The Diaspora:
1. The Shrine of the Barnacle King (Broken Rock)
Located inside the cavernous hollow of Broken Rock, floating tethered by magnetic chains in microgravity, is the galaxy’s largest temple to the Pirate Queen:
- Fabricated entirely from the fused, mangled command decks and armored prows of captured corporate freighters from AbadarCorp and The Stewards.
- Spacers entering the haven throw unrefined ore, gold credit-chits, or silver bullion into a central zero-gravity offering font before embarking on raiding runs.
2. Corsair Rites & Superstitions
Free Captain crews follow strict religious customs:
- The Keel-Tithe: Before boarding a prize vessel, crew members trace the Jolly Roger across their armor plates with engine grease. After a successful haul, exactly one-twelfth of the plunder is sacrificed by shooting it out the airlock into the sun or leaving it anchored to an unmapped asteroid.
- The Mutineer’s Blessing: When a captain acts cowardly, hoards loot, or violates the Code of Asteroids, a Besmaran priest or shipboard chaplain presides over the mutiny, blessing the blades of the crew to ensure the goddess smiles upon the change in command.
- Burial in the Void: Deceased Besmaran spacers are rarely cremated or buried. Instead, they are laid out in a suit-sealed torpedo tube, draped in the pirate colors, and fired into an erratic orbit through the asteroid belt to “sail the stars for all eternity.”
Relations with Other Faiths
Besmara’s relations with other gods are as volatile as a bar brawl in the Neon Hollow:
- Abadar (Bitter Contempt): Besmara regards Abadar—the god of banks, corporate contracts, and commerce—as her primary target. Raiding an Abadarian transport and bankrupting a corporate venture is considered the highest form of worship.
- Torag (Grudging Respect): While she loathes the rigid discipline of dwarven mining citadels, she respects the quality of their armor and the fury of their forge-hammers.
- Calistria (Frequent Allies): The two chaotic goddesses share a mutual love for trickery, revenge, and audacious heists, frequently sharing worshippers among daring smugglers.
- **Iomedae & The Stewards (Nemesis): The lawful, self-righteous crusaders of the Pax Veskarium and Pact Worlds justice represent everything Besmara seeks to plunder and humiliate.
Campaign & Adventure Hooks
- The Ghost Galleon’s Wake: Starship sensors in a turbulent pocket of the Diaspora detect the phantom transponder of The Kelpie’s Wrath, a legendary corsair cruiser blessed by Besmara that vanished three centuries ago during a clash with the Corpse Fleet. The PCs must board the drifting derelict, navigate its unholy security wards, and claim the fabled Besmaran Cutlass before rival scavengers arrive.
- The Desecrated Tithe: A greedy Free Captain stole an ancient, diamond-encrusted idol of the Pirate Queen from the Shrine of the Barnacle King on Broken Rock and fled to the ice-bunkers of Nisis. Besmaran priests place a massive bounty on the thief—promising that whoever returns the relic will receive the eternal blessing of the Pirate Queen on all future starship navigation checks.
- The Mutineer’s Defense: The party’s starship is boarded by a damaged pirate corvette whose crew has just executed a bloody mutiny against a sadistic captain who was secretly allied with Apostae slavers. The new captain begs the PCs for medical aid and fuel, invoking the sacred Right of Berth under Besmara’s code.
