Torag: The Father of Creation

QUOTE

“The forge is a mirror of the soul. If your craftsmanship is flawed, your resolve is compromised. Shield your kin, anchor your stone, and strike until the work is done.”
— The Hammer and Tongs, Holy Scripture of Torag

Torag is the stoic, hard-nosed patriarch of the dwarven pantheon. He is an ancient god of forge-work, protection, and defensive strategy who famously forged the world on his divine anvil before the dawn of mortal civilization. He values honor, structural integrity, and family loyalty above all else, serving as the central anchor of dwarven cultural identity and a defensive shield for all civilized peoples who hold the line against destructive forces.

Appearance & Iconography

Torag is traditionally depicted as a burly, weathered dwarf with a magnificent beard composed of braided iron rings and dark grey stone. He is wrapped in heavy, functional plate armor that shows the honorable scuffs of countless battles, and he always wields his legendary warhammer, Kagrak.

His holy symbol is a heavy, stylized warhammer stamped with concentric rings representing the layers of the earth or the walls of a fortress. Sacred animals include badgers, cave bears, and burrowing creatures that appreciate the solid safety of the stone.

Canonical Eraedal History & Mythos

The Forging of the World

In Eraedal’s deep history, Torag was among the first deities to emerge from the cosmic primordial soup. While other gods looked to the stars and the vast outer planes, Torag turned his gaze inward to the raw materials of the mortal realm. Myth says he shaped the first mountains, hammered out the tectonic lines, and hid precious veins of gems and ore deep within the crust so that mortals would learn the virtue of hard work by digging them out.

The Quest for Sky

Torag’s most monumental historical intervention is the Quest for Sky. For millennia, the dwarven ancestry lived deep in the Darklands (the subterranean depths). Prior to the cataclysmic event known as Earthfall (when a massive meteor struck Eraedal), Torag granted his high priests a collective, burning prophecy: the stone beneath your feet will tremble, and the darkness will consume you. Dig upward to find your salvation. This sparked an epic, multi-generational migration. The dwarves fought through underground horrors for centuries, carving their way toward the surface world. When they finally emerged, they fulfilled Torag’s mandate by constructing massive, impenetrable fortress-cities known as Sky Citadels to anchor his worship and guard the surface.

The Philosophy of Defensive War

Unlike many martial deities who embrace the aggressive, consuming flame of tactical offenses, Torag is an absolute pragmatist when it comes to violence. He despises bloodlust and pointless slaughter. In Torag’s eyes, a war is only worth fighting if it protects what you have built. His strategy centers on stone walls, bottleneck defense, and outlasting an enemy through superior infrastructure.

Divine Relationships

Torag runs his pantheon like an absolute ruler, yet treats his fellow deities with the deep respect of an extended familial household.

Deity / FactionDynamic & Lore

IomedaeDeep Military Alliance. The Inheritor and the Father of Creation share an ironclad bond. While Torag prefers an unyielding bottleneck defense and stone fortifications, he highly respects Iomedae’s battlefield discipline and honor.
