Origin & The Throne of Apostae

The Drow (or Dark Elves) are an ancient offshoot of the elven race whose ancestors fled into the radioactive, subterranean depths of the Darklands on Lost Golarion thousands of years before the Gap. Infused with primordial abyssal energies, tectonic radiation, and demonic pacts, their physiology transformed: their skin took on the hue of polished obsidian, their hair bleached white as bone, and their eyes developed piercing vision suited for total darkness.

When the amnesia of The Gap ended, the drow were found firmly established as the undisputed rulers of Apostae, a rocky, lifeless planetoid on the outer rim of the Mataras System.

  • Explorers soon realized Apostae was not a natural celestial body at all, but a colossal, derelict alien worldship of incomprehensible age.
  • Excavating its endless, lightless interior corridors, drow noble houses unearthed vast caches of extraterrestrial weaponry, experimental antimatter warheads, and forgotten starship schematics.
  • Leveraging these apocalyptic technologies, the drow rapidly transformed themselves into the premier arms dealers and mercenary contractors of the system, winning grudging diplomatic recognition under The Absalom Pact.

Culture & The Corporate Houses

Drow civilization is a lethal synthesis of ancient feudal matriarchy, cutthroat hyper-capitalism, and pragmatic militarism:

1. The Noble Houses & Corporate Fronts

Apostae is divided among powerful noble houses, each operating simultaneously as an aristocratic dynastic clan and a multinational megacorporation:

  • Matriarchal Rule: Leadership within the houses is almost exclusively held by ruthless drow matriarchs who direct corporate policy, arcane espionage, and military fleets.
  • The Bloodied Escalator: Advancement within drow society is achieved through calculated treachery, assassination, and blackmail. Subordinates are expected to ruthlessly exploit weaknesses in their superiors—provided they leave no evidence that would justify retaliation under contract law.

2. Weapons Manufacturing & Tech Supremacy

The drow are universally renowned—and feared—for their manufacturing prowess:

  • Drow arms companies produce the deadliest projectile weapons, plasma rifles, and starship spinal cannons in the galaxy, utilizing exotic alloys and alien reverse-engineering salvaged from Apostae’s core.
  • Even rival factions who despise drow morality, such as the Knights of Golarion and the Veskarium, routinely purchase drow-manufactured ordnance through shell brokers.

Drow in the Diaspora: The Outlaw Fringe

While the matriarchs command their industrial dynasties from the dark spires of Apostae, thousands of drow operate throughout the lawless expanse of The Diaspora:

1. The Renegades of Broken Rock

On Broken Rock, drow outlaws find the perfect refuge from house politics:

  • Disgraced noble scions, exiled assassins, and mutinous privateer officers captain sleek, matte-black stealth corvettes equipped with experimental cloaking baffles.
  • Drow corsairs serve as high-ranking commodores within the Free Captains, specializing in lightning ambush raids against corporate ore-freighters transiting between Verces and Eox.

2. Black-Market Arms Brokers

Drow syndicates operate hidden weapons bazaars inside hollowed metallic asteroids:

  • In the lawless taverns of the Neon Hollow, drow fences sell military-grade laser rifles, bio-engineered nerve poisons, and un-registered heavy torpedoes, taking payment in pure unrefined adamantine or encrypted bearer bonds.
  • They serve as critical supply lines for insurgent cells, rebel factions, and unscrupulous mercenary bands operating beyond the scrutiny of The Stewards.

3. The Shadow of Slavers & The Smuggler Deep

Despite the strict prohibition of sentient slavery under The Absalom Pact, illegal slaving rings operated by rogue drow houses still lurk in the shadows of the belt:

  • They prey upon lone mining skiffs, capturing independent workers or Androids to transport to secret labor operations in the deep ice crevices of Nisis or subterranean Apostae.
  • This trade puts them in perpetual, bloody guerrilla conflict with the Android Abolitionist Front and vigilant Sarcesians snipers defending belt waterways.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Stolen Railgun Prototype: A drow weapons freighter en route to an arms convention on Absalom Station was hijacked by a rival house faction and hidden within a tumbling asteroid in The Diaspora. AbadarCorp security hires the PCs to infiltrate the asteroid bunker and recover the prototype before it is reverse-engineered on Broken Rock.
  • The Renegade’s Bargain: A high-ranking drow scion fleeing an assassination squad from House Zeizerer seeks passage aboard the party’s starship. In exchange for escorting them past drow hunter corvettes to the sanctuary of The River Between, the scion offers encrypted coordinates to an untouched weapon cache from Apostae’s alien core.
  • Slave-Catchers of Nisis: An independent mining outpost on Nisis reports that several crews have vanished without a trace into the deep ice crevasses. Investigating the frozen trenches, the PCs discover a clandestine drow slave-processing outpost protected by automated turret grids and stealth assault craft.
