Origin & The Planar Hegemony
The Efreet (singular: efreeti) are among the most powerful and feared native inhabitants of the Plane of Fire. Forged from living primordial flame, volcanic basalt, and unyielding will, they have ruled vast planar empires since before mortal civilizations mastered the wheel on lost Golarion. From their gilded, volcanic metropolis—the fabled City of Brass—the Sultanate commands legions of salamanders, fire elementals, and bound extraplanar mercenaries.
When mortal starships pierced the corona of Mataras following The Gap, the Efreet immediately recognized the economic and strategic value of the star’s natural planar conduits. Rather than waging an exhausting interplanetary war against the newly formed Pact Worlds, the Sultanate established permanent diplomatic and commercial embassies inside The Burning Archipelago, concentrating their influence in the bustling trading city of Corona.
Today, Efreet trade-barons and pashas control the flow of exotic planar raw materials, high-temperature cybernetics, and condensed solar energy across the system, balancing ruthless corporate diplomacy with ancestral aristocratic pride.

Anatomy & Physiology
An efreeti is a magnificent, terrifying sight to mortal eyes:
- The Magma Chassis: Towering up to twelve feet in height, an efreeti’s flesh resembles molten bronze or polished black obsidian over which cracks of glowing orange and crimson lava slowly pulse. Their hair is composed of actual leaping flames that flare when angered, and their sweeping black horns curve upward like scorched scythes.
- The Living Heat Aura: Even while wearing sophisticated thermal-nullifier garments required by municipal laws in Dawnshore and Corona, an efreeti radiates intense dry heat. Handshakes with an efreeti are rarely offered by un-augmented mortals; an unprotected grip can leave severe third-degree burns in seconds.
- The Cryogenic Vulnerability: While entirely immune to thermonuclear plasma, laser fire, and solar flares, the Efreet have a biological and metaphysical terror of freezing cold. Cryogenic weaponry, liquid nitrogen grenades, and the vacuum of Darkside on Verces cause agonizing cellular shock, solidifying their living magma cores into brittle, shattered slag.
Culture & Society in the Pact Worlds
Efreet society is aristocratic, deeply authoritarian, and fiercely competitive:
1. The Pashas of Corona
In the Brass Bazaar of Corona, efreet merchant-princes conduct business from luxurious, silk-draped brass towers:
- They view mortals—including humans, ysoki, and androids—with thinly veiled condescension, considering them fragile, temporary creatures whose lives flicker out in the span of an efreeti’s afternoon nap.
- Despite their arrogance, they maintain an impeccable, fanatical dedication to legal contracts. An efreeti will never violate the literal text of a signed agreement, though they are notorious across the galaxy for inserting Byzantine fine print, hidden interest rates, and predatory collateral clauses.
2. The Crucible: The Deep-Sun Outpost
Not all Efreet within Mataras are merchants. In the crushing depths of the solar mantle, militant factions maintain The Crucible—a heavily fortified military redoubt built around an illicit planar portal:
- From this submarine base, warlords and corsairs test deep-diving plasma dreadnoughts and stage covert operations to hijack research probes from the Deep Cultures Institute.
- The Crucible operates independently of the civilian ambassadors in Corona, serving as a constant source of friction with The Stewards.
3. The Cold War Over Slavery
The greatest ideological fault-line between the Efreet and the Pact Worlds is the issue of slavery:
- The Sultanate’s economy on the Plane of Fire is built entirely upon chattel slavery.
- Under the Coronal Accord, slavery is punishable by death or immediate deportation within Pact space. Efreet cartels in Corona constantly employ corporate shell companies and clandestine smuggling rings to move indentured laborers and captive psychics through the Far Portal under the guise of “voluntary bonded servants.”
Efreet in the Galaxy
Beyond Mataras, wealthy Efreet can be encountered in the luxury sectors of Absalom Station, the executive suites of AbadarCorp planetary branches, or commanding privateer dreadnoughts in The Vast:
- Corporate Alliances: Many efreet pashas hold significant investment portfolios in AbadarCorp subsidiaries, funding deep-space mineral extraction projects in exchange for monopoly rights over refined planar ore.
- Arms Dealing: Efreet metalcrafters manufacture some of the most devastating plasma cannons, superheated power-blades, and thermal shielding arrays in the black market, eagerly selling to both the Knights of Golarion and the outlaws of Broken Rock.
Campaign Hooks
- The Predatory Debt: A desperate starship captain signs a salvage loan contract with an efreeti merchant in Corona. When the captain falls short on payments, the efreeti hires the PCs to repossess the captain’s vessel—only for the party to discover the ship’s cargo contains refugee orphans fleeing the deep sun.
- The Crucible Incursion: Stewards patrol ships detect a flotilla of heavily armed efreeti sun-cutters launching from The Crucible, heading on an interception vector toward Kahlannal. The PCs must race to warn the Anassanois and help defend the worldship’s crystalline hull.
- The Cryo-Assassination: A high-ranking efreeti diplomat in the Opal Spire is assassinated with an exotic pre-Gap cryogenic toxin that bypasses all fire defenses. To prevent a planar war, the Council of Bubble Ministers hires the PCs to uncover whether the assassin was an agent of the Corpse Fleet or an internal rival from the City of Brass.
