Overview: The Sanctuary in the Star

Suspended inside the roaring, incandescent plasma currents of Mataras floats one of the greatest technological and arcane marvels in the known universe: The Burning Archipelago.

Composed of a constellation of transparent, force-shielded megastructures known as “bubble-cities,” the Archipelago allows nearly two million mortals to dwell comfortably inside a thermonuclear furnace that would vaporize an ordinary dreadnought in seconds. Bound together by solidified ribbons of radiant energy called energy tethers, these cities constitute the primary holy seat of Sarenrae, the galaxy’s most advanced stellar research institutes, and the central hub for interplanar trade with the Plane of Fire.

To spacers gazing out through the polarized, golden energy barriers, the sky is not black void, but a churning, living ocean of gold, violet, and crimson fire, where solar prominences loop like incandescent leviathans across the heavens.

Architecture & Living in the Corona

Life within the Archipelago is made possible by ancient, indestructible force fields of pre-Gap provenance:

1. The Force Bubbles

Each city rests inside a sphere of solidified, self-repairing energy measuring between one and five miles in diameter:

  • Thermal Deflection & Pressure Nullification: The exterior barrier deflects plasma exceeding and shrugs off millions of atmospheres of stellar pressure.
  • Atmospheric Integrity & Gravity: Inside the domes, life-support arrays maintain a clean, temperate atmosphere at and an artificial gravity field calibrated to 1 Standard G.
  • Luminescent Polarization: Looking at an unshielded star causes immediate, permanent blindness; the bubble skins automatically filter solar radiation, bathing the streets in a soft, perpetual warm-gold daylight. Night is simulated by polarizing sections of the dome to a dim violet twilight.
2. The Energy Tethers & Transit

The six primary bubbles are held in rigid geometric formation by colossal beams of coherent light known as energy tethers. These tethers act as the transit highways of the megacity:

  • Linecrawlers: Mag-lev magnetic tramcars ride along the exterior of the tethers, transporting hundreds of thousands of commuters, cargo crates, and pilgrims between domes daily.
  • Sunskimmers: High-speed shuttlecraft equipped with specialized technomantic heat-shields venture out into the open plasma to fly direct courses between bubbles, providing rapid point-to-point transit for wealthy merchants, emergency Dawnguard squadrons, and corporate couriers.

The Six Coronal Bubble-Cities

The Archipelago is not a monoculture, but six distinct city-states linked by faith, commerce, and mutual survival:

  1. Dawnshore (The Threshold of Light): The political capital and primary spaceport. Home to the legendary Radiant Cathedral of Sarenrae and the docking gantries where starships arriving through the Solar Transit Corridor berth.
  2. Corona (The Interplanar Exchange): The bustling commercial district. Home to the famous Brass Bazaar, where efreet, salamanders, and corporate cartels trade raw planar essence, solar gems, and high-temperature technology.
  3. Stellacuna (The Hall of Researches): The intellectual core. Houses the premier astrophysical academies of the Pact Worlds, solitary solarian monasteries, and the headquarters of the Deep Cultures Institute.
  4. Fireside (The Forge Dome): The industrial powerhouse. Massive foundries siphon plasma directly from the corona to forge hyper-alloys, starship armor, plasma weapons, and volcanic Android chassis.
  5. Verdeon (The Living Biosphere): The agricultural haven. A miraculous, lush eco-dome filled with cascading waterfalls, hanging orchards, and terraced farms that feed the Archipelago, alongside resort parks mimicking Castrovel’s jungles.
  6. Asanatown (The Paranoiac Watchpost): The militarized enclave. Settled primarily by Lashunta veterans and scholars, the city is defined by high-alert defense grids and chronic anxiety triggered by a persistent, low-frequency psychic hum rising from the solar interior.

The Deep Sun Connection

Far below the safe orbits of the Archipelago lies the Deep Sun—the crushed, hyper-dense lower convection zone and radioactive core of Mataras:

  • The Sun-Divers: Specialized deep-immersion submersibles piloted by daredevil crews and researchers from the Deep Cultures Institute dive into the plasma to dredge up pre-Gap technology.
  • Ezorod (The Blind City): An inexplicable, pitch-black city frozen within an entropic cold-field floating adrift in the solar mantle.
  • Kahlannal: The ancient, gargantuan generation ark inhabited by the telepathic Anassanois, discovered drifting in the solar interior.
  • Far Portal Station: A fortified pre-Gap orbital ring locking down a permanent, natural gateway into the Plane of Fire.

Security & The Solar Patrol

Defense of the Burning Archipelago is split between local faith-knights and federal peacekeepers:

  • The Dawnguard: The municipal martial order of the Archipelago. Composed of Sarenite paladins, battle-priests, and professional constables, they patrol the streets and linecrawler cars, maintaining peace with non-lethal stun weapons and radiant scimitars.
  • The Solar Patrol (The Stewards): Spaceborne defense is provided by a permanent squadron of Stewards Sun-Cutter cruisers stationed in the corona. They patrol the Solar Transit Corridor to inspect incoming freighters for planar contraband, pirated plasma canisters, and unauthorized deep-sun diving gear.

Campaign Hooks & Coronal Encounters

  • The Tether Sabotage: A sudden explosive decompression shears an energy tether between Dawnshore and Corona, leaving a commuter linecrawler dangling over the thermonuclear abyss. The PCs must execute a daring zero-G rescue in sunskimmers before the linecrawler’s auxiliary thermal shielding collapses.
  • The Deep-Sun Beacon: Telemetry sensors in Stellacuna pick up an anomalous, repeating emergency ping originating from the interior of Ezorod. The Deep Cultures Institute charters the party’s specialized sun-diver to plunge into the Deep Sun and retrieve the ancient data core.
  • The Efreeti Extortion: An envoy from the Sultanate of the Plane of Fire threatens to seal the Far Portal and choke off solar plasma shipments unless the Council of Bubble Ministers cedes sovereign control of Corona’s Brass Bazaar. The party is enlisted by The Stewards to uncover proof of planar smuggling and neutralize the envoy’s mercenary shock troops.
