Overview & The Sovereign Undead

The Bone Sages are the undisputed rulers of Eox—a calculating, aristocratic council of immortal undead spellcasters and scientists who have guided their dead world for thousands of years.

Unlike traditional necromancers of ancient fantasy who sought the mindless annihilation of all life, the Bone Sages are creatures of cold, supreme pragmatic logic. Having survived the self-inflicted cataclysm that incinerated Eox’s atmosphere by converting themselves into undead horrors, they view mortality not with hatred, but with a mixture of clinical pity and economic condescension. To a Bone Sage, the living are fragile, inefficient, and emotionally erratic machines; undeath is simply the logical, superior apex of intellectual evolution.

As founding signatories of The Absalom Pact, the Bone Sages enjoy full constitutional legitimacy across the solar system. Their ambassadors walk the halls of Absalom Station cloaked in sovereign diplomatic immunity, their corporate subsidiaries export advanced medical prosthetics and industrial bone starships, and their media syndicates broadcast high-rating death sports to billions of living viewers across the galaxy.

The Nature of the Necrovite

The vast majority of the ruling Bone Sages are necrovites—a sophisticated technological and magical evolution of the traditional lich:

1. The Technological Phylactery (Inanimatum)

While ancient liches bound their souls into jewel-encrusted boxes or cursed tomes, necrovites store their souls within an inanimatum:

  • A hyper-dense, nanite-infused micro-phylactery engineered from adamantine, superconducting silicon, and quantum stasis coils.
  • An inanimatum can be hidden anywhere—embedded within an orbital satellite, sealed in an impenetrable bedrock vault beneath Orphys, or disguised as an ordinary shipboard component.
  • Should a Bone Sage’s skeletal chassis be blasted to atoms, their soul remanufactures a new physical vessel from the inanimatum over several days, making them virtually impossible to permanently destroy.

2. Intellectual Immortality

Freed from biological necessities—breathing, eating, sleeping, and aging—a Bone Sage can dedicate centuries of unbroken focus to arcane research, economic modeling, and political manipulation.

  • Many Sages have studied the exact same celestial anomalies, mathematical algorithms, or galactic market fluctuations for over a thousand years, outmaneuvering living diplomats who plan only in terms of four-year electoral cycles.

Economy, Industry & Media Dominance

The Bone Sages wield enormous economic power throughout the Pact Worlds:

1. Necrotechnology & Medical Exports

Eox is the undisputed galactic leader in necrotechnology:

  • Necro-Grafts: Specialized bio-synthetic cybernetic implants harvested from preserved dead tissue and animated with negative energy. Because necro-grafts do not suffer rejection shock and resist radiation, living mortals across the galaxy buy them to replace lost limbs or gain darkvision.
  • Automated Workforce: Mindless undead (skeletons and zombies) perform heavy industrial labor in the vacuum and radiation of Eox’s surface mines at zero labor cost, allowing the Sages to undercut off-world mining syndicates on refined ores.

2. The Broadcast Empires

The Bone Sages control massive entertainment and reality-television networks:

  • Capitalizing on the galaxy’s morbid curiosity and appetite for adrenaline, studios in Orphys produce extreme bloodsports, gladiator leagues, and obstacle courses where living and undead competitors clash for astronomical credit prizes.
  • Broadcasts beamed via the Drift to Absalom Station, Verces, and Akiton generate trillions of credits in advertising revenue, which the Sages use to buy raw materials and political influence.

The Shadow of the Corpse Fleet

The greatest political vulnerability of the Bone Sages is their relationship with the Corpse Fleet:

  • The Historical Schism: When Eox signed The Absalom Pact in 291 AG, agreeing to peace with the living and capping its naval armaments, radical military commanders mutinied and stole hundreds of capital warships.
  • Official Condemnation: In the chambers of the Pact Council, the Bone Sages vehemently denounce the Corpse Fleet as treasonous outlaws and terrorists, cooperating with The Stewards on anti-piracy operations.
  • The Dark Rumor: Despite public disavowals, intelligence analysts know that the Bone Sages are deeply fractured. Conservative factions within the Hall of Sages secretly maintain back-channel financial links with Corpse Fleet admirals, viewing the renegade navy as an essential insurance policy should the living worlds ever turn on Eox.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Inanimatum Heist: An eccentric Bone Sage’s private vault is compromised, and their inanimatum is stolen by an off-world infiltration team. Terrified that rival Sages will discover their soul is vulnerable, the Sage hires the PCs under absolute secrecy to recover the phylactery before it is auctioned on the black market of Broken Rock.
  • The Living Petition: A coalition of living Elebrians in Orphys hires the party to deliver an emergency petition to the Pact Council on Absalom Station, exposing an illegal scheme by a faction of Bone Sages to use living workers in fatal radiation experiments.
  • Duel for the Broadcast Rights: A high-ranking Bone Sage media mogul challenges the party to manage their starship’s security team during the live recording of an extreme deep-space salvage show in The Diaspora, only for the broadcast to be ambushed by rival corsairs.
