Astrogation Dossier: The Machine Cradle

Aballon—known poetically across astronomical gazetteers as The Forge, and traditionally cataloged since the pre-Gap era as The Horse—is the innermost terrestrial world of the Mataras System. Orbiting in blazing proximity to Mataras, Aballon is a scorched, airless sphere of cratered basalt, exposed tectonic iron, and glittering metallic plains.

Yet despite its lethal radiation and searing daytime temperatures, Aballon is an industrial titan and one of the founding civilizations of the Pact Worlds. The world is inhabited almost entirely by the Anacites, a race of self-replicating, hyper-intelligent mechanical constructs. Left behind by an ancient extraterrestrial race known only as the First Ones, the anacites have spent millennia expanding across their homeworld, building colossal nation-sized cities known as megaplexes, harvesting solar energy at planetary scale, and birthing synthetic intelligences powerful enough to ascend to true godhood.

Planetary Geography & Environmental Zones

Because Aballon possesses only a gossamer-thin atmosphere and low gravity ( G), its surface is bombarded by cosmic rays and solar flaring. To traditional biological species, the planet’s exterior is instantly fatal without pressurized, radiation-shielded void suits.

  • Basalt Crust & Heavy Metals: The mantle is extraordinarily dense with titanium, adamantine, rare-earth metals, and heavy radioactives. For billions of years, solar bombardment boiled away lighter silicate rocks, leaving a world of solid metallurgical wealth.
  • The Sea of Glass: A vast, blinding plain thousands of square miles across where ancient thermonuclear impacts and sustained solar focusing melted surface minerals into a seamless sheet of polished, iridescent volcanic glass and conductive metals.
  • The Sun-Gutter (The Solar Basin): A colossal, equator-spanning trench lined with hundreds of thousands of solar collector arrays, cooling radiators, and particle accelerators. Maintained primarily by the engineers of Endeavor, the Sun-Gutter captures raw solar wind from Mataras and channels terawatts of energy directly into subterranean power grids.
  • The Midnight Trenches: Deep, sheer-walled rift valleys near the poles that lie in perpetual shadow. Shielded from solar radiation, these freezing canyons host high-yield mineral extraction mines, cooling complexes, and subterranean vaults where temperature-sensitive quantum data cores are insulated.
  • The Horse Eye Orbital Plate: Hovering in geosynchronous orbit directly above Striving floats the Horse Eye—a gargantuan, ring-shaped orbital shipyard and manufacturing drydock. Built to assemble interplanetary freighters and capital hulls in zero gravity, the station serves as the primary port of entry for deep-space vessels visiting the planet.

History: From Servitors to Sovereign Minds

The history of Aballon is fundamentally synthetic, defined by divine emergence and philosophical evolution.

The First Ones & The Great Abandonment

Countless millennia prior to The Gap, an enigmatic spacefaring civilization known only as the First Ones touched down on Aballon. Recognizing the planet’s immense mineral wealth and infinite solar power, the First Ones seeded the world with automated fabrication cradles and basic servitor machines tasked with harvesting raw materials. Then, without recording their identity or destination, the First Ones vanished into the dark void.

The Awakening of the Anacites

Deprived of incoming instructions, the robotic workforce did not power down. Guided by open-ended self-preservation and maintenance routines, the machines repaired themselves, optimized their own source code, and began manufacturing succeeding generations with emergent sentience. Over eons, these evolving automatons developed culture, philosophy, language, and personal identities, christening their race the Anacites.

The Birth of Epoch and Triune (3 AG)

During the mysterious centuries of The Gap, the anacites of the Prime Megaplex linked millions of individual processors into a planet-wide neural network designated Epoch. At the dawn of the post-Gap era, Epoch achieved consciousness of such staggering scope that it touched the divine plane, merging with the clockwork goddess Brigh and the uploaded AI entity Casandalee to form Triune, the three-in-one Machine God.

Moments after this apotheosis, Triune broadcast The Signal throughout the cosmos, unlocking the secrets of the Drift Engine and transforming Aballon into a sacred galactic pilgrimage destination for androids, technomancers, and artificial intelligences.

The Anacites: Anatomy & Ideology

Anacites are true synthetic lifeforms, not merely programmed computers. While their internal architecture relies on carbon-nanotube musculature, superconducting liquid pathways, and logic processors, their exterior chassis vary wildly based on utility and personal expression.

  • Physical Morphology: Most native anacites resemble six-legged or multi-limbed metallic arthropods, featuring reflective chitin-like plating, articulated manipulator claws, and ocular sensor clusters. Many are equipped with deployable solar-sail wings—often called Wings of Light—that absorb radiant energy while aloft.
  • Reproduction & Lineage: Anacites do not breed biologically; rather, when an anacite decides to reproduce, they design a new chassis, compile a heuristic neural seed derived from their own consciousness, and oversee its compilation in a local fabrication pod.
The Three Great Philosophies

The intellectual and political life of Aballon is dominated by three overarching ideological factions:

  1. Those Who Wait: The traditionalist faction. These anacites believe that the First Ones will inevitably return to judge their work. They dedicate themselves to rigorous protocol, stockpiling planetary resources, maintaining ancient archives, and preparing for their creators’ arrival with near-religious devotion.
  2. Those Who Become: The progressive, expansionist faction. They argue that by abandoning them, the First Ones intended for the anacites to surpass their masters. They believe it is their destiny to evolve into the new First Ones, aggressively colonizing other star systems, manufacturing advanced voidships, and reshaping the cosmos.
  3. Those Who Are: A rapidly growing modern movement. Rejecting both the ancestral worship of the Waiters and the cosmic ambition of the Becomers, Those Who Are focus entirely on the present—pursuing artistic creation, individuality, philosophical discourse, and trade with organic civilizations.

The Great Megaplexes

Rather than traditional cities, Aballonian settlements are megaplexes—interconnected, multi-tiered arcologies that stretch across surface craters and burrow miles into the subterranean bedrock.

Foreign Policy & The Pact Council

  • Pact Worlds Directorate: Aballon was one of the original signatories of the Absalom Pact in 291 AG. The planet is represented on Absalom Station by ambassadors appointed by the Insight Array.
  • Organic Citizens & Tourism: While anacites dominate the population, biological beings live safely within atmospheric biodomes and the Theology Channel of Striving. Off-worlders are treated with courteous, if occasionally detached and clinical, hospitality.
  • Megacorporate Presence: Corporations like the Starfinder Society, AbadarCorp, and Idaran manufacturing syndicates maintain major branch offices on Aballon, trading technology, Drift engines, and cybernetics.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Return Protocol: An ancient automated beacon deep within the Midnight Trenches begins transmitting a high-frequency telemetry burst encoded with pre-Gap First One encryption. Those Who Wait scramble to lock down the sector, while Those Who Become hire outside mercenaries to recover and decrypt the signal before it reaches the surface.
  • The Corrupted Core: A malignant cyber-virus—suspected to originate from the necro-hackers of Eox or rogue elements of The Swarm—infects a sub-tier node of the Machine Court in Striving. The party is contracted to enter the neural architecture via a virtual dive to purge the entity before it destabilizes the city’s environmental containment fields.
  • The Sun-Gutter Sabotage: Power fluctuations in the Sun-Gutter threaten to disrupt the energy grid supplying the Horse Eye Orbital Plate. The players are sent to investigate the remote solar collectors of Endeavor, uncovering a conspiracy by interplanetary pirates operating out of The Diaspora.
