Astrogation Dossier: The Cosmic Nightmare

Aucturn—whispered with dread across the galaxy as The Stranger—is the thirteenth and outermost planet of the Mataras System, orbiting alone in the frozen, lightless void approximately seventeen astronomical units from Mataras. To incoming starship sensors, Aucturn presents a nauseating, sickly sight: a swollen, yellow-black sphere enveloped in swirling, oily clouds of toxic vapors, glowing with faint, bio-luminescent veins that pulse like diseased arteries across the planetary disc.

Aucturn is not a conventional ball of stone, magma, or inert gas. According to xenobiologists, occult scholars, and the terrified reconnaissance reports of The Stewards, Aucturn is a living, embryonic Great Old One.

The entire planet is an organic, sentient super-entity slowly gestating in the deep dark at the edge of known space. Its mountains are calcified spinal ridges; its chasms are weeping lacerations leaking black amniotic ichor; and its seismic tremors are biological spasms as the cosmic monstrosity shifts in its eons-long slumber. Shunned by all civilized peoples, Aucturn is a quarantined nightmare where apocalypse cultists, mad warlocks, and grotesque larval custodians prepare for the day the world awakens and hatches into the stars.

The Living Geography of The Stranger

The terrain of Aucturn defies terrestrial geology, consisting of organic flesh, calcified skeletal plates, and petrified chitin layered over churning muscle and vascular systems:

1. The Citadel of the Black

The only permanent, towering city-structure on Aucturn is The Citadel of the Black, an imposing, windowless fortress carved from a single, cyclopean pillar of polished black alien stone that rises miles into the poisoned sky.

  • The Seat of the Crawling Chaos: Dedicated to Nyarlathotep (The Black Pharaoh / The Crawling Chaos), the Citadel absorbs all radar, lidar, and optical scanning, appearing as a terrifying void-silhouette on starship viewports.
  • Master Otolmens: The fortress is governed by Otolmens, an ancient, seemingly immortal or possessed prophet who claims to hear the direct whispers of the Outer Gods. Inside the Citadel’s non-Euclidean corridors lie forbidden pre-Gap grimoires, blasphemous planar altars, and deep-space scrying basins communicating with the horrors of the Dark Tapestry.
  • The Cultist Haven: Pilgrims who survive the planetary descent gather in the lower levels of the Citadel to trade cursed relics, offer blood sacrifices, and seek initiation into the highest mysteries of the void.
2. The Amniotic Sea

Spanning the equatorial lowlands lies a vast, oily body of liquid known as the Amniotic Sea.

  • Filled not with water or methane, but with a warm, viscous, bioluminescent black nutrient sludge, this sea functions as the external uterine fluid of the gestating planet.
  • Proto-aberrations, tentacled larvae, and blind, telepathic horrors gestate within its depths, crawling onto the basalt shores to feed upon one another in an endless cycle of Darwinian slaughter.
3. The Grav-Cenotaphs

Scattered across the yellow, fungus-carpeted wastes stand circular arrangements of colossal, black stone monoliths known as the Grav-Cenotaphs.

  • These ancient stone circles emit localized gravitational distortions and temporal shearing fields.
  • Unwary explorers who step between the pillars find themselves aged decades in seconds, cast backwards into historical visions of pre-Gap antiquity, or crushed into paste by sudden localized gravitational spikes.
4. The Loving Place

One of the most insidious biocentric hazards on Aucturn is the valley known as The Loving Place.

  • Sheltered between two calcified bone ridges, this deceptive vale blooms with vibrant, sweet-smelling alien fungi and glowing spore-blossoms that pump euphoric, telepathic pheromones into the air.
  • Humanoids who enter are overwhelmed by intense sensations of love, peace, and spiritual completion. Lured into resting upon the soft mossy banks, victims are slowly enveloped by fine fungal tendrils that inject paralyzing enzymes, painlessly liquefying their tissues and absorbing their biological matter directly into the planetary nervous system.

The Inhabitants: Midwives, Cultists & The Touched

Despite its lethal environment, Aucturn harbors a substantial, horrifying population:

The Midwives

The true native stewards of Aucturn are the Midwives—a race of grotesque, multi-limbed larval aberrations.

  • Physiology: Standing ten to twelve feet tall on segmented, centipede-like limbs, Midwives possess fleshy, glistening carapaces, dozens of weeping compound eyes, and long, prehensile feeding proboscises.
  • Cosmic Duty: The Midwives view themselves as the doctors and obstetricians of the slumbering god. They wander the surface tending to necrotic tears in the planet’s skin, clearing biological blockages from amniotic canals, and defending the planetary nerve clusters against mortal drilling. They regard mortal beings either as irritating parasites to be eradicated or organic fertilizer to feed the gestation.
Cults of the Elder Mythos

Aucturn is the spiritual nexus for galactic death cults, apocalyptic nihilists, and dark warlocks from across the Pact Worlds.

  • Fanatical disciples of Azathoth, Yog-Sothoth, and Shub-Niggurath establish temporary encampments in the shadow of the bone ridges, conducting dark rituals to speed the entity’s awakening.
  • Some cults believe that when Aucturn hatches, it will consume the corrupt universe in a cleansing fire of madness, elevating its faithful to immortal, ascended horrors.
The “Aucturn-Touched”

Mortals who linger on the planet without impenetrable environmental shielding inevitably succumb to the mutagenic spores of the atmosphere.

  • Known as the Aucturn-Touched, these wretched survivors experience profound physical and psychic degradation: skin hardening into scaly black chitin, extra joints sprouting from limbs, and minds fractured by constant telepathic broadcasts from the planet’s dreaming brain.

Systemic Standing: The Quarantine Hazard

Aucturn is strictly a Non-Member World within the Pact Worlds.

The Steward Blockade

The Pact Council on Absalom Station classifies Aucturn as a Class-Omega bio-occult hazard:

  • The Stewards maintain automated warning buoys and long-range military patrol corvettes around Aucturn’s orbital perimeter. Spacers attempting to approach the planet are warned of immediate death, severe legal prosecution, and the forfeiture of their vessels.
  • However, the blockade cannot prevent every cultist stealth vessel or mad explorer from slipping through the patrol net, particularly when the planet’s erratic magnetic field blinds sensor grids.
The Policy of Containment

The Pact Council does not attempt to invade, colonize, or destroy Aucturn. Starship bombardment could potentially damage the planetary membrane and accelerate the awakening of the cosmic horror within—a cataclysm no civilization in the galaxy is equipped to survive. The prevailing diplomatic consensus is simple: leave the Stranger alone in the dark, and pray it never wakes.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Cardiac Shockwave: An immense, planetary-scale cardiac pulse shudders through Aucturn’s crust, generating a psychic shockwave that knocks out Drift beacons across the outer system and drives telepaths across the Pact Worlds mad with apocalyptic visions. A strike team of The Stewards recruits the PCs to make a covert landing on the living surface, fight through swarms of defensive Midwives, and detonate a psychic dampening warhead inside a gaping neural vent to sedate the slumbering entity.
  • Heist in the Citadel of the Black: A dying scholar on Absalom Station discovers that the original, uncorrupted stellar coordinates of lost Golarion are etched upon a black obsidian tablet held inside the inner sanctum of The Citadel of the Black. The player characters must slip past the Steward orbital blockade, navigate the shifting non-Euclidean halls of the Citadel, and steal the tablet before High Prophet Otolmens discovers their presence.
  • The Hatchling Outbreak: A corporate bio-weapons vessel from Verces that crashed in the Amniotic Sea has been recovered by corporate mercenaries who plan to transport an intact larval Midwife to an orbital station above Absalom Station. The party is deployed on an urgent black-ops intercept to board the corporate transport, purge the mutagenic infestation, and jettison the bio-pod into the sun before the creature matures.
