Astrogation & Structural Overview: The Station’s Forgotten Past

Sandwiched directly between the lowest inhabited machinery levels of The Spike and the heavily shielded containment vault of the divine Starstone reactor lie The Ghost Levels. Comprising hundreds of sealed, unmapped decks, derelict maintenance galleries, and forgotten research modules, this vast subterranean wilderness remains the greatest structural and historical mystery of Absalom Station.

When mortal memory and data records abruptly rebooted at the end of The Gap in 0 AG, the citizens of Absalom Station found these deep sublevels completely deserted, dark, and severed from the station’s municipal computer network. Over the centuries, attempts by the Pact Council to survey and colonize the Ghost Levels were repeatedly abandoned due to high casualty rates, lethal security countermeasures, and strange planar distortions radiating from the station’s keel.

Environments & Hazards

1. The Rust Warrens

The upper strata of the Ghost Levels, directly below the sealed access hatches of The Spike. Once intended as modular residential quarters or emergency evacuation berths, the Warrens are now collapsed labyrinths of corroded metal, hanging wiring, and buckled deck-plates. Scrappers and desperate outlaws occasionally carve out temporary squatting dens here, though feral vermin and toxic mold spores make long-term survival rare.

2. Autonomous Pre-Gap Sentries

Among the greatest dangers of the Ghost Levels are the ancient autonomous guardians. Security bots, heavy defense turrets, and combat automata—manufactured before The Gap by unknown masters—still patrol these dark corridors. Suffering from millennia of code degradation, corrupted memory cores, and erratic power surges, these sentries treat any living intruder as an enemy combatant, deploying lethal laser grids, thermal detonators, and suppression fields.

3. The Drowned Conduit

A series of colossal pipe shafts and environmental filtration basins that ruptured centuries ago, submerging dozens of decks under thousands of gallons of stagnant, radioactive water. Chem-luminescent fungi and bioluminescent blind predators thrive in these zero-light depths, through which intrepid salvagers in armored diving hardsuits must swim to access deeper research chambers.

4. Gravitational & Planar Shears

Because the Ghost Levels sit in close physical proximity to the Starstone reactor, the laws of physics are frequently warped. Explorers report localized dead zones where gravity drops instantly to zero, inverted corridors where walking on the ceiling is required, and temporal micro-stutters where digital chronometers glitch or run backward.

Scavenger Expeditions & The Black Salvage Market

Despite official quarantines enforced by The Stewards and Station Security, an active underground economy thrives on illicit Ghost Level salvage:

  • The “Ghost Walkers”: Reckless, well-armed salvage teams operating out of Downlow who cut through air-duct gratings and emergency pressure doors to plunder the deep decks.
  • Pre-Gap Technology: Intact optical storage crystals, prototype circuit boards, ancient physical books, and uncorrupted datalogs recovered from the Ghost Levels command astronomical prices from corporate tech-scouts of AbadarCorp and the antiquarians of the Starfinder Society.
  • The High Toll: Station mortuaries and scrap guilds estimate that for every ten salvagers who descend past Deck 50, fewer than three return with their lives and sanity intact.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Scrapper’s Ledger: A dying salvager collapses on the threshold of a cantina in Downlow, clutching an encrypted pre-Gap datapad containing star-coordinates predating The Gap. Before passing, they whisper that their crew was wiped out by a metallic shape-shifter in Vault 88. The party is retained to descend into the vault, verify the discovery, and recover the fallen crew’s physical remains.
  • The Pulse from Below: An electromagnetic shockwave erupts from Deck 112 in the Ghost Levels, frying electrical conduits across Fogtown and temporarily disabling docking radar on The Arms. Station authorities cannot officially dispatch peacekeepers into the quarantined zone, so The Stewards hire the PCs as an expendable deniable team to locate the malfunctioning pre-Gap reactor and shut it down.
  • The Hunt for the Defector: A disgraced technomancer from The Arcanamirium steals an unstable arcane power-focus and flees into the Ghost Levels, believing the ancient defense sentries will protect them from corporate assassins. The party must track the fugitive through gravity shears, flooded conduits, and sentry kill-zones before the stolen artifact detonates.
