Astrogation & Orbital Structure: The Unanchored City

Adrift in the silent void surrounding Absalom Station in a loose, shifting orbital cloud is The Armada—a sprawling, unanchored flotilla of thousands of independent void-craft. Comprising rugged asteroid freighters from The Diaspora, multi-generation nomad arks, freelance mercenary gunboats, and salvage platforms, the Armada functions as a living, breathing shadow-city orbiting the heart of the Pact Worlds.

The origins of the Armada are rooted in economic pragmatism and fiercely defended spacer independence. By maintaining orbit outside the physical docking berths of The Arms, vessel captains avoid Absalom Station’s heavy municipal docking fees, commercial tariffs, and invasive customs inspections. Over the centuries since The Gap, this floating collective has evolved its own proud maritime culture, legal traditions, and mutual-defense pacts.

Macro-Geography & Life in the Flotilla

1. “Rafts” & Tethered Clusters

While many vessels maintain solo orbits, ships frequently moor together into temporary floating agglomerations called “rafts.” Using magnetic clamps, carbon-nanotube cables, and pressurized flexible umbilical tunnels, dozens of freighters and passenger shuttles interconnect. Residents walk between hulls in shirtsleeves, visiting neighbors, trading supplies, and patronizing zero-g hydroponic diners. These rafts form and disperse organically based on trade winds, fuel supplies, and clan alliances.

2. The Concourse (The Void Bazaar)

The economic heart of the Armada is The Concourse, a semi-permanent cluster of thirty massive, decommissioned bulk freighters tethered together in a ring. Within the pressurized interior holds of the Concourse lies a bustling zero-g trade fair where off-world belters, smugglers, and independent merchants barter goods without municipal oversight or AbadarCorp processing surcharges.

3. The Master of Stars

The crown jewel of the Armada is the historic flagship of the Starfinder Society, The Master of Stars. A gargantuan, heavily customized pre-Gap colony carrier measuring nearly a mile in length, this legendary vessel serves as a mobile academy, research shipyard, and deep-space staging platform. Anchored within the outer ring of the Armada, it can house thousands of field agents, starships, and archaeological relics recovered from The Vast.

4. The Welder’s Cluster

A specialized industrial flotilla of mobile fuel refineries, plasma scrap-rigs, and zero-g welding gantries. Operated largely by Ysoki grease-monkeys and dwarven void-smiths, the Welder’s Cluster offers fast, no-questions-asked starship armor repairs and black-market transponder alterations for vessels damaged in skirmishes across the outer rim.

Politics, Sovereignty & Systemic Defense

The Captains’ Moot & The Armada Council

Civil authority in the Armada is purely consensual. Each registered ship is legally regarded as a sovereign enclave governed by its captain. Major disputes, orbital traffic routing, and collective defense are arbitrated by the Armada Council, an elected assembly of veteran commodores and clan leaders who convene in the central dome of the Concourse.

The Auxiliary Fleet

While municipal authorities on Absalom Station view the Armada with suspicion—often labeling it a haven for deserters, tax-evaders, and smugglers—the relationship is symbiotic. In times of existential threat, the Armada represents an indispensable military asset. During the apocalyptic invasion of The Swarm War, the improvised gunboats, Q-ships, and armed freighters of the Armada rallied alongside The Stewards, providing a tenacious auxiliary screen that prevented alien hive-pods from reaching the station’s hull.

Campaign & Adventure Hooks

  • The Ghost Raft: A cluster of five interconnected transport vessels goes dark on communication channels and begins drifting out of designated orbital lanes, on a collision course with Docking Arm 17. The party is scrambled by The Stewards to board the silent raft in zero gravity, restart the station-keeping thrusters, and discover why the entire crew has undergone violent, spontaneous bio-mutation.
  • The Smuggler’s Runaway: A high-value informant carrying decryption keys to an illicit Corpse Fleet cache flees into the Concourse. As rival squads of corporate bounty hunters from AbadarCorp and mercenary squads scour the pressurized tunnels, the PCs must locate the informant and extract them across the void via thruster packs before the raft is raided.
  • Sabotage at the Moot: The Armada Council gathers aboard The Master of Stars to vote on an interplanetary defense treaty with The Stewards. Moments before the vote, an explosive decompression breach rocks the assembly hall. The party must seal the breach, restore life support, and unmask the saboteur hiding among the assembled captains.
