🏰 Overview: The Iron Anchor of the Spire

Rising with grim, imposing majesty above the red-tiled roofs of Oldtown, Dalenguard is the oldest standing fortified structure in the city of Ptolus—and the martial cornerstone of the Western Empire’s authority on the eastern seaboard of Eraedal.

Constructed centuries ago in the early centuries of the Imperial Order, long before the modern city expanded across the bluffs, Dalenguard was originally established as an isolated military redoubt to guard the coastal approaches of the Bay of Ptolus and monitor the ominous shadow of the Spire. Built from colossal blocks of dark Prustan granite and mortar laced with alchemical lead, its thick curtain walls and jagged watchtowers have withstood earthquakes, siege bombardments, and subterranean incursions without yielding an inch.

Today, Dalenguard serves as the official administrative seat and palatial residence of Igor Urnst, the Imperial Commissar. It functions as the central headquarters, armory, and training barracks for the eight-hundred-strong City Watch, housing judicial magistrate courts, subterranean detention cells, and the heavily guarded iron portals leading into the depths of the ancient Dungeon.

  1. The Commissar’s Keep: A four-story central redoubt housing the offices of Igor Urnst and the imperial bureaucratic magistrates. Its upper chambers feature heavily warded council rooms where the Commissar conducts tense negotiations with envoys from Holy Emperor Rehoboth and the Council of Coin.
  2. The City Watch Barracks & Armory: Extensive stone barracks capable of housing over a thousand men-at-arms. The armory holds racks of masterwork halberds, heavy crossbows, and enchanted breastplates stamped with the Imperial Lion and the crest of Ptolus.
  3. The Subterranean Iron Portal: Deep in the deepest cellars beneath the citadel lies a massive iron door bound in cold iron chains and inscribed with ward-glyphs. Known as the Dungeon Gate, this guarded threshold opens into the upper tunnels of the subterranean labyrinth, used by the Watch to deploy tactical squads when horrors crawl up from the undercity.

📜 The Tri-System Synthesis: Dalenguard Canon

1. The Physical Shell (Palladium Canon)

  • Represents the Western Empire’s foremost fortified military citadel on the eastern coastal frontier overlooking the Inland Sea.

2. The Ancient Bones (Praemal / Ptolus Lore)

  • Faithfully drawn from Monte Cook’s Ptolus: City by the Spire (pages 174–180).
  • Dalenguard’s foundations rest upon pre-cataclysmic dwarven battlements linked to the forgotten upper halls of Dwarvenhearth.

3. The Active Pulse (Pathfinder 2e Remaster)

  • The City Watch garrison operates under PF2e Remaster tactical rules (sworn fighters, investigators, abjuration mages, and clerics of Iomedae and Abadar).
  • Encounters within the fortress feature Dalenguard Watch Veterans (Creature 3), Watch Captains (Creature 6), and Imperial Inquisitors (Creature 7).
