⛰️ Overview: The Impossible Needle
Dominating the horizon of eastern Eraedal for leagues around, The Spire is a three-thousand-foot pinnacle of unyielding, blackened stone that rises vertically out of the coastal cliffs beside the Bay of Ptolus. Defying all mundane laws of geology, architecture, and terrestrial physics, this impossibly narrow needle of stone thrusts straight into the sky, casting a colossal, moving shadow across the city of Ptolus from dawn until dusk.
To common folk, the Spire is an awe-inspiring wonder and a constant source of dread. Its sheer, glassy basalt flanks are completely devoid of vegetation, footholds, or natural paths. Crowning its highest pinnacle, perpetually veiled in storm clouds and crackling with unnatural azure lightning, sits Jabel Shammar—the ancient, cyclopean fortress built aeons ago by the half-fiend archmage Ghul, and by elder entities before him.
Beneath its grim exterior lies Eraedal’s deepest metaphysical secret: the Spire is not a natural mountain, but a cosmic pin driven through the mantle of the world during the primordial cataclysm to anchor the reality-warping slumber of the Galchutt / Old Ones.

|
[ THE LOWER BUTTRESS (0–1,000 Ft) ]

(Deep Bedrock Anchor Plunging into the World's Core)
- The Lower Buttress: At its base, the Spire broadens into a tiered limestone and granite shelf upon which Ptolus’s elite Nobles’ Quarter is built. The estates of powerful dynasties—such as House Sadar and House Dallimothan—are carved directly into the living rock of the monolith’s lower flanks.
- The Sheer Shaft: From one thousand to nearly three thousand feet, the Spire narrows into a sheer cylinder of obsidian-hard black stone. Fierce oceanic winds tear around its flanks at all times. Flight magic utilized near the upper shaft often fluctuates wildly due to ancient anti-magic wards and planar turbulence.
- Jabel Shammar: The legendary fortress perching upon the summit. Described in ancient annals as the citadel from which the conqueror Ghul directed the horrific Ghul Wars, Jabel Shammar is said to house reality-bending planar observatories, bound fiends, and ancient repositories of dark sorcery. No mortal has scaled the Spire and returned to tell of it in living memory.
📜 The Tri-System Synthesis: Spire Canon
1. The Physical Shell (Palladium Lore)
- Stands as the premier geographic anomaly of the Western Empire’s eastern seaboard along the Inland Sea.
2. The Ancient Bones (Praemal / Ptolus Lore)
- The central metaphysical monument of Monte Cook’s Ptolus: City by the Spire.
- Acts as the world’s primary metaphysical anchor: when the ancient coalition of gods and titans sealed the Galchutt into the planet’s deep bedrock, the Spire was raised to hold the planetary wound closed.
- The dark moon Vallis passes directly over the Spire’s apex during lunar convergences, triggering surges in chaotic magic and waking nightmares throughout the undercity below.
3. The Active Pulse (Pathfinder 2e Remaster)
- The Spire emanates a subtle, high-level primal/occult aura (Level 20 Abjuration & Transmutation).
- Climbing the Spire without magical aids requires legendary Athletics checks (DC 45) due to its glassy surface and perpetual gale-force winds.
- Spells cast at the apex function under intensified planar conditions.
