🔔 Overview: The Heralds of the Unmaking Chime

The Tolling Bell is the most metaphysically focused, apocalyptic, and insidious doomsday cult active on Eraedal. While their sister-sect, the Cult of the Ebon Hand, revels in the chaotic mutation of mortal flesh, the Tolling Bell operates on a grander, cosmic scale: they view all material existence as an agonizing, temporary discord that must be resolved through a single, devastating harmonic resonance.

The cult’s doctrine revolves around the science of destructive sonic metaphysics. They believe that the primordial prison forged millennia ago to contain the Galchutt deep within the bedrock beneath Ptolus is anchored by resonant planetary frequencies. By constructing massive subterranean acoustic chambers, tuning colossal inverted bells, and sounding discordant ritual chimes, the cult seeks to trigger a seismic and planar cascade known as the Night of Dissolution.

When that final chime strikes, the seals of the Banewarrens will crumble, the Spire will split, and the primordial entities will burst forth from the deep crust to consume the Material Plane.

  1. High Priestess Ibard: The fanatical field commander of the Tolling Bell and trusted right hand of Shigmaa Wuntad. Ibard carries a masterwork heavy mace whose head is hollowed into an inverted, runed iron bell. In the ambush at Pythoness House, it was Ibard’s Bell of Sleep that instantly incapacitated the heroes, allowing Wuntad to strip their relics.
  2. The Vessel Harvesters: The Tolling Bell does not seek merely to kill their enemies; they cultivate living catalysts. Cultists understand that certain individuals—such as the adventurers bearing ancient Runic Birthmarks—are living cosmic tethers. The cult tracks these “marked vessels,” allowing them to grow in power until the appointed cosmic hour when their energy can be siphoned directly into the Bell of Dissolution.
  3. Subterranean Sound-Foundries: In deep, sound-dampened vaults beneath the Temple District and Guildsman District, cult smiths and corrupted metallurgists cast massive bells from alloys of meteoric iron, lead, and petrified dragon-bone, tuning each to harmonize with tectonic fault lines.

🧭 The Looming Crisis: The Night of Dissolution

  • The Inversion of Faith: While Holy Emperor Rehobath Ylestos preaches the restoration of the Western Empire from the Holy Palace, the Tolling Bell operates right beneath the feet of the Temple District, digging tunnels beneath the holy cathedrals to install sound-resonators.
  • The Party’s Peril: Having learned from Wuntad that their runic birthmarks are designed to act as conduits for the cult’s final ritual, the adventurers face a race against time: they must unmask the cult’s underground bell-foundries and dismantle the sound-engines before the final toll echoes across the Spire.
