ποΈ Overview: The Iron Gaze of the Dead God
The Inquisitorial Synod of the Slumbering Eye is the dreaded, uncompromising judicial and intelligence arm of the Imperial Rite. While the paladins of the Order of the Dawn ride openly beneath gilded sunburst banners, the Inquisitors of the Synod operate in the shadows, cloaked in heavy slate-grey cowls and high-collared crimson mantles, their faces partially obscured by hinged iron masks etched with the stylized eye of Aroden.
Historically forged during the darkest epochs of the Western Empire in Caer Itom, the Synod was the very organization that drafted and enforced the infamous Edict of Deviltry and directed the bloody purges of the Days of Blood (560β609 IA) against the Inverted Pyramid.
When Caer Itom fell in 702 IA, Holy Emperor Rehobath Ylestos ensured that his Chief Inquisitor, Frederick Vane, and the surviving cadres of the Synod evacuated with the imperial treasury.
Re-established within the fortified annex of the Holy Palace in Ptolus, the Synod serves as Rehobathβs ruthless covert agency. They operate outside the jurisdiction of secular Commissar Igor Urnst, ignoring the cityβs civil magistrates to enforce imperial religious edicts, conduct secret interrogations, and execute black-budget operations in the undercity.

- The Hunt for the Banewarren Relics: Grand Inquisitor Vaneβs primary operational priority in Ptolus is the subterranean breach into the Banewarrens. Convinced by imperial scripture that Danarβs primordial vaults contain divine Azlanti weaponry forged by Aroden before the dawn of history, the Synod has deployed elite subterranean search-units into the sewers, determined to claim these relics to crush the northern warlords and southern dynasts in the Three-way Civil War.
- Arcane Surveillance: The Synod despises the fact that Ptolus has operated as a βsafe haven for wizardsβ since 615 IA. They conduct clandestine surveillance on the Inverted Pyramid and independent adventuring mages, maintaining dossiers on any spellcaster capable of casting 5th-rank magic or higher.
- The Scouring of Chaos: While their methods are tyrannical, the Synod is genuinely fanatical in its hatred of the Galchutt. They track the Cult of the Ebon Hand and The Tolling Bell with merciless brutality, executing cultists with sanctified fire whenever discovered.

π§ Conflict with the Adventurers
- The Key Target: Inquisitor Vaneβs diviners have caught traces of ancient sealing magic vibrating from Delverβs Square. Once the Synod realizes the party holds the Chaos Spirit Key saved from Pythoness House, Vane will deploy snatch-squads to seize it under imperial forfeiture laws.
- The Castle Shard Barrier: Because the party is warded under the protection of Lord Zavere, the Synod cannot openly assault them in the streets without triggering an open armed standoff with Zavereβs shadow retainers and secular Dalenguard watchmen. Instead, they will attempt to ambush the party in the undercity or corner them outside the gates.
