🌑 Overview & Personality

Lord Renn Sadar is the cold, enigmatic patriarch of House Sadar, widely known across Ptolus as the “House of Shadows.” Occupying a monolithic palace carved from volcanic basalt situated in the perpetual, cold shadow cast by the massive Spire, Lord Renn is the preeminent mortal master of shadow-magic and extradimensional manipulation in the city.

Renn is an intellectual titan who speaks in quiet, measured whispers that carry more dread than a general’s bellow. He treats political maneuvering, noble feuds, and arcane discovery as complex games of chess played across centuries. He rarely loses his composure, viewing anger, empathy, and sentimental attachment as intellectual flaws that compromise strategic focus.

His primary ambition is unlocking the deepest metaphysical secrets of the Spire and the Shadowfell conduits that pierce Eraedal’s crust. Because of his vast arcane wealth and deep patron relationship with the Inverted Pyramid, Renn wields immense influence over both the civic magistrates and the city’s independent spellcasters.

💔 The Estrangement of Lady Rael

Within the Sadar dynasty, Lord Renn’s greatest personal frustration is the defection of his brilliant niece, Lady Rael:

  • Rael was originally groomed to be Renn’s ultimate arcane protege and heir to the Sadar fortune.
  • Horrified by Renn’s dark experiments with void-tainted chaositech and extradimensional shadow-binding, Rael broke her oaths, stole several family wards, and aligned herself with Lord Zavere at Castle Shard.
  • Renn views Zavere as an insolent upstart and regards Rael as a traitor who will eventually be forced to return to the Sadar fold when Castle Shard falls.

🪶 Physical Appearance

Renn Sadar looks like a living wraith draped in aristocratic finery. He is a tall, slender man in his late fifties with skin the color of polished marble and dark, hollow eyes that seem to absorb ambient light. His raven-black hair is streaked with silver at the temples, combed straight back across a high, sharp forehead.

His most unsettling trait is his shadow: instead of mirroring his movements, Renn’s shadow often delays by a fraction of a second, twists into serpentine contours, or reaches out toward nearby light sources of its own volition. He dresses in flowing robes of Midnight Silk woven with shadow-threads, bearing silver brooches shaped like eclipse crescents.

🧭 Story Hooks for Adventurers

  1. The Stolen Grimoire: Lord Renn quietly hires the party to recover a stolen shadow-tome taken from his library by an operative of the Killraven Crime League. He warns them not to open the book, as reading the runes without shadow-sight dissolves the mind.
  2. The Castle Shard Ultimatum: Learning that the party was rescued and treated by Lady Rael at Castle Shard after the Pythoness House disaster, Renn sends an umbral courier offering the party an enormous sum of platinum to spy on Zavere’s defenses.
  3. The Banewarren Shadow Rupture: Renn discovers that subterranean fractures from the Banewarrens are bleeding void-energy directly into the lower basements of the Sadar Palace, animating the estate’s shadow-servants into hostile monsters. He needs a strike team to venture into the cellars and seal the fissure.
