🏛️ Overview: The Gateway to the Undercity
Delver’s Square is the beating commercial, cultural, and logistical heart of adventuring life in Ptolus. Originally laid out centuries ago as a quiet municipal commons named Runihan Square in honor of the folk hero Abesh Runihan, the plaza’s fate was forever altered when seismic shifts and municipal excavations behind Runihan’s 14-foot stone fountain cracked open the entrance to the Delver’s Stair.
Once the staircase revealed endless miles of ancient subterranean halls, sunken dwarven armories, and gold-paved vaults, the quiet plaza transformed almost overnight into a booming frontier marketplace. Today, Delver’s Square never sleeps. Day and night, hundreds of mercenaries, sellswords, sorcerers, cartographers, and merchant caravans pack the cobblestones. The air is thick with the scent of pipe-smoke, roasting meats from the Ghostly Minstrel, horse dung, whale oil from Ebbert’s Outfitters, and the metallic tang of newly sharpened blades from Rastor’s Weapons.

1. Lodging, Rumors & Food
- The Ghostly Minstrel: The legendary four-story inn and tavern facing the western cobblestones. Managed by Zade Kenevan and Katherine Herdsman, it provides warded suites, rumor boards, and the mysterious, benign spectral performances of the Minstrel.
- Danbury’s Tavern: An upscale, quieter spellcasters’ salon on the northern avenue, serving as the discrete contact node for the Dreaming Apothecary.
2. Steel & Defense (The Iron Alliance)
- Rastor’s Weapons: Cornellius “Rastor” Rastor’s masterwork armory, stocking cold-iron, silver, and masterwork blades, polearms, and exotic weapons.
- The Bull and Bear: Operated by brothers Hirus Feek and Sholum Feek with sales clerk Iltumar Shon, providing custom armor tailoring, heavy shields, and salvage reforging.
3. Magic & Oddities
- Myraeth’s Oddities: Run by Myraeth Thistlebrush, the square’s premier buyer and seller of scrolls, wands, rings, and wondrous items. Provides foolproof magical identification services.
4. Supplies & Sanctified Aid
- Ebbert’s Outfitters: Ebbert Boltcrafter’s cavernous warehouse of pitons, silk ropes, 10-foot poles, waterproof sacks, and expedition survival kits.
- St. Gustav’s Chapel: Presided over by Father Lamriel, offering 24-hour trauma triage, disease cleansing, anti-toxins, and gentle repose stasis for fallen delvers.
🛡️ Security: Watch Post 4 & The Delver’s Stair
Overlooking the gaping portal of the Delver’s Stair stands Watch Post 4, a fortified granite blockhouse garrisoned by the City Watch:
- The Descent Toll: Delvers must register their party roster and pay a nominal municipal token fee (1 sp per person) before descending the staircase.
- The Quarantine Check: Returning explorers are screened by Watch arcanists for dangerous magical afflictions, chaotic mutations, or active curses before entering the square.
- Peace Wards: While swords are worn openly, drawing a weapon in anger or casting an offensive evocation triggers instant response from the garrison’s snipers and counter-mages.
🧭 Story Hooks for Adventurers
- The Statue’s Tears: The 14-foot statue of Abesh Runihan begins weeping brackish water that smells of the sea, while faint tremors rattle the cobblestones. Local mages warn that ancient subterranean water-locks deep in Dwarvenhearth are failing.
- The Square Shakedown: Tensions boil over as enforcers from the Killraven Crime League attempt to extort independent suppliers around the square, leading to a street brawl right outside the Ghostly Minstrel that the party must de-escalate.
- The Banewarren Contraband: A panicked novice adventurer rushes up the Delver’s Stair carrying a pulsating, chaositech-tainted cylinder stolen from the outer gates of the Banewarrens, collapsing at the party’s feet just as agents of The Inquisitorial Synod and the Cult of the Ebon Hand converge on the square.
