🕊️ Overview & Personality

Father Jonathan Lamriel is the weary, saintly physician who stands between life and death for hundreds of explorers in Delver’s Square. While high prelates debate doctrine in the gold-leafed archbasilicas of the Temple District, Father Lamriel lives in the blood, brine, and splints of frontline trauma surgery at St. Gustav’s Chapel.

Lamriel is an profoundly compassionate, soft-spoken man whose voice carries the quiet gravity of someone who has held the hands of dying young men and women for more than twenty-five years. He treats healing not merely as a magical discharge of divine power, but as an intimate, sacred pact between the healer, the wounded, and the Dawnflower. He is endlessly patient with the terrified and delirious, but he possesses an unbreakable core of moral defiance against tyranny.

Despite his exhausting schedule, Lamriel remains a beacon of unyielding ethics. He treats fallen goblins, tieflings, disgraced noble duelists, and penniless gutter-rats with the exact same tender care he would afford an Imperial Arch-Lector. His guiding tenet is absolute: “The chapel doors are open to any soul that bleeds; once crossed, the threshold is sanctuary.”

🩺 Physical Appearance

Father Lamriel looks older than his fifty-seven years. He is a tall, slender man whose shoulders stoop slightly under the weight of long nights in the infirmary ward. His face is gaunt, marked by deep laugh-lines and shadowed, sleepless eye sockets, though his gray-blue eyes radiate an intense warmth and presence. His dark silver-streaked hair is cropped close and unruly, often damp with sweat or poultice steam.

Rather than wearing the opulent silk dalmatics favored by the prelates of Rehobath Ylestos, Lamriel wears practical, durable robes of undyed linen and coarse grey wool, covered by a heavy leather medical apron stained with faint shadows of boiled herbs, witch-hazel, and iodine. His fingers are long, steady, and scrubbed raw with carbolic soap. Around his neck hangs a humble pewter amulet depicting the blazing sunburst of Sarenrae entwined with the sword of Iomedae.

⚖️ The Inquisitorial Standoff

Father Lamriel is currently in open, dangerous defiance of Grand Inquisitor Frederick Vane and The Inquisitorial Synod:

  • The Mark Edict: Vane issued an imperial warrant commanding all clergy in Midtown to detain and report any individual bearing Runic Birthmarks, chaotic mutations, or necrotic burns resembling contact with the Banewarrens.
  • The Hippocratic Defiance: Lamriel publicly rejected the edict, stating that violating patient sanctity to feed the Inquisition’s torture chambers in the Iron Tower would be a mortal sin against the Order of Light.
  • The Cold War: Inquisitorial informants now lurk outside St. Gustav’s gates, monitoring patients carried in through the door. Lamriel operates with the constant knowledge that Vane may fabricate a heresy charge against him at any moment to install synod inquisitors in the clinic.

🤝 Relationship with the Party

To your adventuring company, Father Lamriel is an invaluable patron and humanitarian anchor:

  1. Trauma Recovery: When the party drags battered or poisoned members out of dungeons like Pythoness House, Lamriel provides immediate stabilization, intensive medical observation, and rapid reduction of Drained and Enfeebled conditions.
  2. Sanctuary for the “Marked”: Lamriel is one of the few priests in Ptolus who knows about the party’s flaring Runic Birthmarks and refuses to turn them over to the Inquisition. Instead, he offers soothing alchemical salves to suppress the burning pain caused by the Natharl’nacna resonance.
  3. Resurrection Channel: While Lamriel cannot cast 7th-rank Resurrect rituals himself, he maintains the chapel’s crystal stasis-bier to preserve fallen allies in gentle repose while negotiating with Prince Kirian Ylestos at the Cathedral of the First Radiance for divine restoration.

🧭 Story Hooks for Adventurers

  1. The Fungal Ward Contagion: Several delvers rescued from a collapsed sewer line below Midtown are infected with a chaotic mutation spores that cause weeping black eyes and violent convulsions. Lamriel asks the party to delve into the quarantined sewer conduits to gather fresh fungal stalks needed to synthesize an antitoxin.
  2. Shielding the Witness: A rogue inquisitorial investigator who uncovered evidence of Vane’s illegal Banewarren excavation collapses inside the chapel with a crossbow bolt in their back. Lamriel asks the party to secretly smuggle the dying witness to Castle Shard before Vane’s inquisitors breach the nave.
  3. The Siphoned Fonts: The holy water in the chapel’s cleansing fonts has turned brackish and foul overnight, and holy symbols begin sweating dark ichor. Lamriel suspects a nearby cell of the Cult of the Ebon Hand or the Tolling Bell has planted a cursed chaositech idol beneath the chapel’s foundation.
