⚙️ Overview: The Masters of Clockwork & Gunpowder

The Shuul is the most secretive, industrially powerful, and technologically advanced organization on Eraedal. Operating out of the smoke-belching, steam-hissing brick compounds of the Great Foundry in the heart of the Guildsman District, the Shuul is a dedicated brotherhood of artificers, clockwork mechanists, alchemical metallurgists, and gunsmiths who believe that the future of mortal civilization lies not in fickle divine prayer or elitist wizardry, but in the precision of the gear and the power of the chemical reaction.

Historically, the Western Empire has enforced draconian bans on personal artillery—ever since Empress Addares issued the Imperial Firearms Prohibition in 386 IA following the assassination of her husband. However, in the booming frontier of Ptolus, the Shuul operates under special dispensation from secular Commissar Igor Urnst, who recognized that firearms and pneumatic defenses were essential to protect the city from subterranean abominations.

While commoners know the Shuul primarily as the exclusive licensed manufacturers of pistols, muskets, and mechanical clockwork limb replacements, the order’s true, sacred mission is ideological: the total eradication of Chaositech. The Shuul views chaositech—the grotesque fusion of living mutated flesh, demonic tissue, and brass machinery birthed by the Galchutt—as a profanity against mechanical science. Whenever chaotic bio-machinery surfaces from the undercity, the Shuul deploys heavily armed strike teams to seize, incinerate, and decontaminate the tainted devices.

  1. The Ordinance Wing: The heavily guarded center where sulfur, saltpeter, and alchemical charcoal are blended into stable black powder. Here, master gunsmiths craft wheellock and flintlock firearms, distributing weapons exclusively to the City Watch, certified guard companies, and licensed delvers.
  2. The Clockwork Ward: A marvel of geothermal engineering. Powered by artesian steam pipes tapping subterranean vents, this division manufactures intricate clockwork timepieces, mechanical lock mechanisms, and articulated clockwork prosthetics that replace limbs severed in the dungeons.
  3. The Chaositech Inquest: The Shuul’s specialized military arm. Clad in lead-reinforced coats and brass breathing respirators, Inquest squads hunt down flesh-machinery used by the Cult of the Ebon Hand, dragging salvaged horrors into geothermal furnaces to melt them into slag.

⚔️ Pathfinder 2e Remaster Mechanics

The Shuul introduces Gunslinger mechanics, clockwork augmentations, and specialized anti-chaos ordinance:

  • Firearm Dispensations: In Ptolus, carrying a firearm requires an official Shuul or Dalenguard dispensation token (Cost: 20 gp + proof of civic standing). Carrying an unlicensed firearm carries a 100 gp fine and weapon confiscation by the City Watch.
  • Clockwork Prosthetic (Item 5): Replaces a lost limb. Grants a +1 item bonus to Athletics checks involving that limb and is immune to bleed effects.
  • Anti-Chaos Munitions: The Shuul produces cold-iron and dawnsilver bullets that deal an additional 1d6 damage to creatures carrying the chaotic or aberration traits.

🧭 Story Hooks for Adventurers

  1. The Chaositech Bounty: Grand Artificer Boren contracts the party to intercept a courier from the undercity suspected of carrying a living chaositech spinal graft intended for Shigmaa Wuntad. The Shuul offers rare firearms or masterwork clockwork gear for its recovery.
  2. The Smuggler’s Warehouse: A rogue faction within House Balacazar has begun smuggling unlicensed black powder into the Warrens to supply criminal gangs. The Shuul hires the party to raid the dockside warehouse before a catastrophic explosion levels the pier.
  3. The Iron Inquest Collaboration: Inquisitor Frederick Vane attempts to seize the Shuul’s black powder storehouses under royal wartime requisition for the Three-way Civil War. Master Savane asks the party to negotiate with Commissar Urnst to block the church’s seizure.
