🕊️ Overview: The Field Hospital of the Delvers
St. Gustav’s Chapel is the indispensable mercy-house and emergency field hospital of Delver’s Square. While the grand basilicas of the Temple District cater to high state politics, aristocratic funerals, and the grand liturgies of the Cathedral of the First Radiance, St. Gustav’s is a working sanctuary of blood, splints, and whispered bedside prayers.
Named after an ancient martyr of the Order of Light who died nursing victims of a subterranean plague during the Ghul Wars, the chapel is built from humble whitewashed stone, fronted by heavy oak doors that remain unlocked day and night. Inside, the nave smells intensely of burning frankincense, antiseptic vinegar, dried sage, and clean linen bandages. Long rows of padded cots line the side aisles, occupied by unconscious explorers, paralyzed fighters recovering from ghoul bites, and adventurers being treated for caustic slime burns.
The chapel is presided over by Father Lamriel, an exhausted, soft-spoken human cleric with hollowed eyes, silver-streaked hair, and ink-stained hands. Lamriel has spent twenty years patching together broken adventurers carried up from the Delver’s Stair. Supported by a dedicated cadre of acolyte clerics of Sarenrae and Iomedae, Lamriel operates under an uncompromising moral vow: no wounded soul who crosses the threshold is ever turned away, so long as they do not bear weapons drawn in violence.

- Trauma Triage: The acolytes administer non-magical and low-rank magical healing around the clock. Characters resting in the chapel’s infirmary cots under Father Lamriel’s care recover from the Wounded, Drained, or Enfeebled conditions twice as fast as standard bed-rest.
- The Cleansing Fonts: The chapel houses three stone baptismal fonts continuously blessed with holy water, utilized to wash away toxic fungal spores, necrotic grime, and subterranean parasites before they take root in delver flesh.
- Resurrection Coordination: While St. Gustav’s lacks the high-level prelates to cast 7th-rank Resurrect rituals on-site, Lamriel maintains an enchanted crystal-stasis bier. Fallen heroes brought to the chapel can be placed in gentle repose while Lamriel arranges emergency transit to Prince Kirian Ylestos at the Cathedral of the First Radiance.
⚖️ The Pressure of the Inquisition
Despite its humanitarian mission, St. Gustav’s has recently fallen under intense political pressure:
- Grand Inquisitor Frederick Vane of The Inquisitorial Synod has dispatched agents to audit Lamriel’s clinic, demanding that the chapel report any patient exhibiting Runic Birthmarks, chaotic mutations, or necrotic burns from the Banewarrens.
- Father Lamriel has repeatedly refused to violate his healing vows, warning the Synod that turning medical clinics into inquisitorial traps will destroy the delicate peace of Delver’s Square.
- Privately, Lamriel fears that Vane will soon fabricate heresy charges against him to seize the chapel and install church inquisitors.
🧭 Story Hooks for Adventurers
- The Outbreak in the Ward: Three delvers carried up from the sewers succumb to a terrifying, previously unseen strain of Ebon Rot that resists standard Cleanse Affliction spells, causing chaotic tendrils to sprout from their flesh. Father Lamriel begs the party to venture into the upper sewer junction to harvest a sample of the fungal spore-cluster to synthesize a cure.
- The Inquisitorial Raid: While the party is visiting St. Gustav’s to purchase holy water, an inquisitorial snatch-squad under the command of The Inquisitorial Synod bursts through the doors, attempting to drag away a wounded tiefling delver on charges of heresy. The party must intervene without turning the chapel into a bloodbath.
- The Stolen Tithe Diamonds: A chest of five 500 gp diamonds intended to fund resurrection rituals for impoverished delvers is stolen from the chapel’s vestry. Lamriel suspects a rogue cutpurse allied with House Balacazar, asking the party to retrieve the stones before desperate families lose their loved ones permanently.
