🎒 Overview: The Honest Iron of the Square
Ebbert’s Outfitters is the indispensable, no-nonsense commercial anchor for every expedition setting foot in Delver’s Square. Housed in a squat, solid granite building with reinforced oak doors and iron-barred display windows, the shop smells intensely of tar, boiled leather, whale oil, and fresh cedar sawdust.
The shop is owned and operated by Ebbert Boltcrafter, a broad-shouldered, iron-bearded dwarf who spent twenty harrowing years plumbing the upper ruins of Dwarvenhearth before retiring to supply the next generation of explorers. Having survived cave-ins, slime floods, and goblin ambushes, Ebbert holds a fierce disdain for fragile magical knick-knacks and overpriced wizard curiosities. He preaches that when water floods a tunnel or a pit trap gives way, survival comes down to three things: a stout rope, sharp iron spikes, and a reliable crowbar.
From floor to high timber rafters, the shop is packed with wooden crates, coiled hempen lines, bundles of seasoned ash poles, and kegs of lard and oil. Delvers arriving in Ptolus from across the Western Empire make Ebbert’s their very first stop, loading up pack mules and haversacks with the mundane essentials of life underground.

- Folding 10-Foot Pole (Item 1, Cost: 2 gp): Ebbert’s personal innovation. Forged from interlocking hollow steel rods, it collapses down to 3 feet for easy carrying, assembling with an Interact action to probe floor tiles for pit traps.
- Sealed Waterproof Sacks (Item 0, Cost: 5 sp): Coated in thick alchemical pitch, keeping parchment, maps, and torches bone-dry even when submerged in flooded sewer conduits.
- Whale Oil Special: Sourced directly from whalers docking in the Bay of Ptolus, Ebbert’s lantern oil burns 20% longer than standard olive fuel.
🎭 Roleplaying Ebbert Boltcrafter
- Demeanor: Gruff, pragmatic, and uncomfortably honest. If a cocky wizard walks in wearing silk slippers to buy a wand, Ebbert will bark at them to buy a pair of steel-toed boots before a falling rock breaks their toes.
- Dungeon Advice: For the cost of a pint of dark ale or a 5 sp purchase, Ebbert gladly dispenses priceless advice on subterranean hazards:
“Listen close, lad. You see black mold on the ceiling, you don’t burn it—the fumes will choke your lungs out. You freeze it or scrape it with vinegar. And if you hear rhythmic ticking behind a stone wall, it ain’t a clock. It’s a clockwork burrow-trap left behind from the Ghul Wars. You turn around and run.”
🧭 Story Hooks for Adventurers
- The Defective Piton Batch: Several delvers have plunged to their deaths near the Delver’s Stair after their climbing pitons snapped like twigs. A furious Ebbert hires the party to trace the supplier in the Guildsman District, suspecting a merchant was bought out by House Balacazar to sell brittle slag iron.
- The Lost Clan Hammer: Ebbert offers a 500 gp store credit and a masterwork climbing rig if the party recovers his grandfather’s inscribed forging hammer, lost twenty years ago in the flooded pumping station beneath Dwarvenhearth.
- Emergency Rescue Rigging: When a cave-in near the broken threshold of the Banewarrens traps a company of young explorers, the Delver’s Guild recruits Ebbert and the party to rush heavy jacks, winches, and tunneling timbers down the shaft before the air runs out.
