💀 Overview & Personality

Vamal Shard is the most powerful living necromancer in Ptolus and the civilian chancellor of The Forsaken. While the undead aristocrats of the Dark Reliquary—vampires, ancient wights, and mummies—rule the crypts through raw immortal power, Vamal serves as their living diplomat, scholar, and logistical architect.

Vamal is a man of chilling intellectual refinement. He does not dress in moldering grave-shrouds or giggle maniacally like the fanatical demonologists of The Fallen. Instead, he comports himself like a high-court scholar or an imperial chancellor. He views necromancy not as a moral abomination, but as the ultimate, unforgiving science of thermodynamics and mortal conservation: energy and will preserved beyond the brittle limits of flesh.

He is polite, soft-spoken, and immaculately groomed. When negotiating with living delvers or imperial representatives, Vamal is shockingly courteous, offering fine tea imported from the southern provinces and discussing ancient history with erudite calm. However, beneath his polished aristocratic veneer lies a ruthless, predatory pragmatist who views all humanoid life as raw material to be measured, utilized, or transformed.

🪶 Physical Appearance

Vamal appears to be an imperial gentleman in his early fifties who has aged with extraordinary grace—largely due to subtle necromantic alchemical treatments. He is tall and lean, with sharp cheekbones, aristocratic features, and skin the pale shade of vellum parchment. His silver-white hair is neatly slicked back and tied at the nape of his neck with a black velvet ribbon. His eyes are a piercing, unnatural violet, faintly glowing when he channels void magic.

He dresses in immaculate, high-collared velvet coats of deep plum and charcoal, tailored in the antique fashion of the Western Empire’s imperial court before the civil war. Across his chest hangs a silver watch-chain bearing a carved obsidian scarab, and his slender fingers are adorned with heavy rings set with black opals and soul-gems. He carries an ebony walking cane tipped with a silver skull, which conceals a thin, spell-etched rapier blade.

🧭 Story Hooks for Adventurers

  1. The Inverted Pyramid Contact: Vamal quietly contacts the party on behalf of allies in the Inverted Pyramid. He possesses a fragmented star-map recovered from the deep reaches of Dwarvenhearth detailing the sealed Quarn gates within the Banewarrens, and he will trade it to the party if they recover an ancestral grimoire stolen by the Killraven Crime League.
  2. The Purge of the Fallen: Frustrated that the cultists of The Fallen are actively preparing to sacrifice commoners to summon a Galchutt entity during the Night of Dissolution, Vamal secretly supplies the party with counter-wards and floorplans to raid the Fallen’s altars inside the Dark Reliquary.
  3. The Stolen Phylactery: An apprentice necromancer has absconded from the Reliquary with an unbonded, ancient lich-phylactery, fleeing toward Midtown. Vamal hires the party to track down and eliminate the thief before the artifact ruptures and levels three city blocks.
