Overview
Grimbor Isle, centrally located in the Floenry chain, is the namesake and primary territory of the giant ape-men known as the Grimbor. The island is a dense, untamed tropical jungle, rich with the toppled megaliths and shattered architecture of a forgotten civilization, culminating in a massive, ancient temple pyramid in the south. The Grimbor, believed to be the regressed descendants of the pyramid’s builders, fiercely defend their home. Due to centuries of persecution by slavers and raiders, they view all humanoids with profound disdain and intense hostility, attacking outsiders on sight without possibility of parley.
Geography
The island is entirely blanketed by a dense, untamed tropical jungle with a vibrant, flowering green canopy. The northern shore is protected by jagged coastal rocks, making it impossible for standard ships to safely anchor or dock. Buried within the jungle’s heavy weave of vines are frequent toppled stone megaliths, weathered totem pillars, and fragments of ancient architecture. Towards the southern region, these ruins become more abundant, culminating in the Massive Temple Pyramid. This astounding structure, despite having its apex sheared off, stands 300 feet tall and measures 500 feet at its base. Its flat, severed top is entirely overgrown, forming an isolated jungle microcosm.
Governance
Grimbor Isle is governed by the powerful Grimbor tribe, led by a chieftain. Their governance is primal and territorial, characterized by a profound and aggressive hostility towards all humanoids, whom they classify as “destructive demons.” They operate on a policy of immediate ambush and attack, having learned through bitter experience never to trust outsiders, and cannot be swayed by diplomacy or empathy. Their survival depends on violently driving away or slaying intruders.
Points of Interest
- The Massive Temple Pyramid
- A colossal, ancient structure in the southern part of the island, partially toppled but still an impressive 300 feet tall. It serves as the primary home and defensive stronghold for the majority of the Grimbor tribe, particularly its summit. Numerous dark doorways lead into hollow chambers and tunnel networks, though these are rarely inhabited.
- The Canopy Scaffold
- An intricate, multi-tiered network of wooden platforms, vine suspension bridges, and hidden hunting blinds constructed by the agile Charau-ka Grimbor variant within the flowering green canopy surrounding the pyramid. This scaffold allows for three-dimensional warfare, rapid repositioning, and provides tactical advantages like cover and surprise attacks.
Notes
Inhabitants: The Grimbor Tribe
The island is exclusively inhabited by the Grimbor, powerful, towering ape-men. Their population, once tens of thousands, has been severely reduced to an estimated 900 survivors due to foreign slavers, poachers, and raiders.
Behavior and Combat Tactics
The majority of Grimbor reside atop and around the Massive Temple Pyramid. They use their exceptional athleticism to scale its vine-covered walls, gaining a defensive vantage point from its jungle-crowned summit. Against intruders attempting to scale the pyramid, they utilize the abundant crumbled masonry as ammunition for their Throw Rock ranged attack. The more agile Charau-ka variant utilizes the Canopy Scaffold for three-dimensional warfare, employing high climb speeds and Acrobatics for rapid repositioning and raining down projectiles. Ground-based targets are frequently caught off-guard, with the platforms providing cover.
History and Cultural Lore
The Grimbor are believed to be the direct, regressed descendants of the pyramid’s original builders. Centuries of depredation by foreign humanoids have instilled in them a deep-seated hatred and fear of outsiders. They perceive all humanoids as “destructive demons” due to their reliance on arcane spells, occult magic, “second skin” (heavy armor), and forged metal armaments, which they view as proof of malevolent origins. They will ambush and attack humanoid travelers immediately, as parley is ineffective.
The Grimbor Chieftain
The tribe is led by a powerful Level 6 leader who wields a prized trophy, a unique +1 striking shocking heavy mace embedded with primal runes, which the tribe calls the “demon’s own war club.” This weapon leverages the Chieftain’s immense Strength for devastating bludgeoning blows and electrical crackle. Three times per day, it can unleash a concentrated bolt of electricity (40 ft range) or cast translocation, allowing the Chieftain to instantaneously reposition across the battlefield to defend the pyramid with exceptional skill.
