Magrim: The Taskmaster

QUOTE

“The mortal forge must eventually grow cold, and the hammer must fall silent. Present your ledger cleanly, honor the paths of those who dug before you, and prepare for the final inspection.”
— The Overseer’s Ledger, Funerary Liturgy of Magrim

Magrim is the stern, unyielding god of the dead, transitions, ancestral paths, and the dwarven underworld. As the elder brother of Torag, he is the oldest member of the divine family, acting as the solemn custodian who waits at the end of every dwarf’s mortal life. Magrim has no interest in battlefield glory or the creative fires of construction; his focus is trained entirely on the spiritual accounting of souls, the preservation of ancestral memory, and the protection of ancient crypts. He ensures that those who labored honestly in life receive their hard-earned rest, while strictly managing the transitions of spirits from the material clay to the eternal vaults of the Outer Planes.

Appearance & Iconography

Magrim is traditionally depicted as a burly, weathered dwarf whose skin is composed of dark, polished obsidian or porous volcanic stone. His massive beard is slate-grey, woven with heavy granite rings and carved runic tablets detailing the names of deceased heroes. His eyes are entirely featureless spheres of pale, chalky quartz, representing his absolute, blind impartiality when judging souls. He wears functional, unpolished grey plate armor that carries the scent of fresh grave-dirt and damp subterranean air, holding a massive stone warhammer in one hand and a giant iron ledger in the other.

His holy symbol is a stylized iron ledger stamped with a dark runic symbol for “Finality,” or a stone warhammer pointing directly downward into a stylized mountain silhouette. Sacred animals include cave-dwelling scavengers and blind burrowers, particularly moles, cave crickets, and bats.

Canonical Eraedal History & Mythos

The Guardian of the Deep Gates

Before the monumental Quest for Sky split the dwarven ancestry between the surface Citadels and the subterranean depths, Magrim was the primary divine anchor of the Darklands. While Torag managed the physical safety of the early clans, Magrim established the Deep Vaults of the Rested—localized planar pockets hidden within the solid stone where the souls of early dwarven miners could commune with their descendants. When the prophecy of the sky arrived, Magrim stepped back to guard the rear lines, protecting the ancestral tombs from being desecrated by pursuing orc hordes or abyssal entities during the centuries-long upward migration.

The Spiritual Accountant

Central to Kuthite and Pharasmin records is Magrim’s role as the de facto estate manager for dwarven spirits. When a dwarf perishes anywhere in the universe, their soul does not instantly enter the standard line at Pharasma’s crystal throne. Instead, the spirit travels down through the rock to Magrim’s subterranean court in the Boneyard. There, Magrim reviews the soul’s mortal ledger, ensuring they fulfilled their oaths, honored their ancestors, and completed their assigned craftsmanship tasks. Once approved, he personally guides them across the border to Forgeheart, allowing them to join Torag’s eternal divine workforce or rest peacefully within Folgrit’s celestial hearth chambers.

Divine Relationships

Magrim maintains a cold, professional distance from the chaotic squabbles of the multiverse, operating as a pillar of absolute order within his family house.

Deity / FactionDynamic & Lore
ToragThe Patriarch’s Counsel. As the elder brother, Magrim respects Torag’s position as leader of the pantheon. Torag frequently consults him before entering large conflicts, relying on Magrim’s absolute, unblinking pragmatism to predict strategic losses.
PharasmaProfessional Alliance. The Lady of Graves treats Magrim with exceptional courtesy. She permits him to run his auxiliary court within her Boneyard realm, trusting his flawless ledgers completely and allowing his psychopomps to manage dwarven necropolises without interference.
UrgathoaAbsolute Enmity. Urgathoa represents the ultimate rot that perverts life’s natural transitions. Her necromancers, ghouls, and vampires directly violate Magrim’s edicts, stealing souls from his ledger and leaving ancestral clay to rot in state, making her church a target for his inquisitors.
DroskarThe Dark Smith’s Shame. Magrim harbors a profound, burning hatred for Droskar. While Magrim values purposeful, disciplined labor that leads to an honorable rest, Droskar perverts work into endless, soul-crushing toil and slavery, stripping away the spiritual value of a mortal’s ledger.
Trudd & Cayden CaileanSevere Disapproval. Magrim views Trudd’s reckless front-line bravado and his boisterous, casual carousing with Cayden Cailean as incredibly immature and disruptive. He continuously warns Trudd that an unprepared entry into his ledger is a massive dishonor to the family line.

Campaign Context: Eraedal & Spire Notes

Ancestral Priestly Ties

Within your campaign sandbox, Magrim’s portfolio links beautifully with your player character Wilgard “Willie” Gramm. While Willie is explicitly sworn to Trudd’s active defense, his ancestral line of war and cloistered priests stretches back to the historic Ghul Wars.

The Gramm ancestor who helped seal the catastrophic Ghul threat was heavily guided by Magrim’s funerary inquisitors, using his repose domains to ensure the fallen heroes of that era stayed anchored safely beneath the stone rather than being harvested by the dark reliquaries of the Spire. This makes Magrim an excellent resource for investigating the current zombie infiltrations under Borlon.
