Lamashtu: The Mother of Monsters
QUOTE
“Pristine flesh is an unwritten slate, cold and dead in its perfection. True beauty is carved in mutations, born in the frantic howling of the night, and multi-shaped to survive. Multiply, adapt, and let the weak fear the strength of the broken.”
— The Skull-Bound Tablets, Dark Scripture of the Mother
Lamashtu is Eraedal’s ancient, horrific goddess of monsters, madness, nightmares, and maternal corruption. Sitting upon her throne of gnashed bone in the Abyssal realm of the Malice, she represents the terrifying, predatory side of birth and survival. Lamashtu has absolute contempt for civilization, purity, and the structured order of the civilized planes. To her, the universe is a brutal crucible where only the most adaptable, mutated, and ruthless monstrosities deserve to inherit the earth. She is the dark patron of outcasts, gnolls, goblins, and any being that embraces physical or psychological deformity to conquer their predators.

Appearance & Iconography
Lamashtu is depicted as a towering, nightmarish hybrid humanoid with the snarling head of a rabid jackal, a third vertical eye burning on her forehead, and a pair of massive, feathered raven wings slick with black grease. Her hands terminate in predatory hawk talons, and her feet are those of an apex hunting bird. Most distinct and terrifying is her heavily bloated, perpetually pregnant belly, covered in weeping, self-inflicted ritual scars. In battle, she wields twin legendary falchions: Red Redoubling (a blade of jagged, rusted iron that drips hot blood) and Chillheart (a crystalline sword that burns with ice-cold abyssal malice).
Her holy symbol is a stylized, three-eyed jackal head surrounded by a halo of jagged feathers or talons. Sacred animals include all mutated beasts, jackals, hyenas, wolves, and monsters that hunt in packs under the cover of a moonless night.
Canonical Eraedal History & Mythos
The Slaying of Curchanus
In the ancient primordial history of the Outer Planes, Lamashtu was originally a powerful, cunning Demon Lord ruling a standard layer of the Abyss. Her path to true godhood was forged through an act of unprecedented celestial murder. She orchestrated a brilliant, multi-layered ambush against Curchanus, the ancient, neutral god of beasts, travel, and the wilderness.
Lamashtu lured the old god into the deepest pits of her abyssal territory, setting loose swarms of nightmare-beasts to bleed his power away. Once Curchanus was exhausted, she struck him down with Chillheart and tore his divine essence apart with her talons. She successfully consumed his portfolio of Beasts, instantly ascending from a mere demon into a fully realized, major deity. Before she could consume his portfolio of Travel, Curchanus managed to pass that final spark to his ally, Desna, cementing an eternal, cosmic blood feud between the Star-Song and the Mother of Monsters.
The Dark Mirror of Family
While standard civilized societies view Lamashtu as a source of absolute terror, her cults worship her as a deeply loving, albeit completely twisted, matriarch. She acts as a horrific mirror to deities like Folgrit or Erastil. To her followers, Lamashtu is the only god who accepts the unwanted, the deformed, and the outcasts.
Her rituals involve dark midwiferies, where pregnant cultists pray to have their infants mutated in the womb, granting them thick hides, predatory claws, or multiple limbs to ensure they survive a hostile world. Her church teaches that civilization is an unnatural illusion that makes mortals soft and vulnerable; by returning to the pack mentality of the beast and the protection of the family monster, one achieves true planar alignment.
Divine Relationships
Lamashtu rules the monstrosities of the dark planes through fear and instinct, maintaining toxic, violent feuds across all cosmological factions.
| Deity / Faction | Dynamic & Lore |
|---|---|
| Desna | Eternal Blood Feud. Desna will never forgive Lamashtu for the murder and consumption of her old mentor, Curchanus. Their outer-planar servants engage in a brutal, zero-sum war across the borders of the Astral Plane, with Desna guarding mortal dreams from the corruptive nightmare-parasites deployed by Lamashtu. |
| Erastil | Visceral Hatred. Erastil values pristine, stable agrarian family lineages, domestic livestock safety, and modest community traditions. Lamashtu represents the absolute corruption and mutation of livestock, crops, and households, making her church an immediate target for Old Deadeye’s longbow hunters. |
| Folgrit | Matriarchal War. Folgrit provides a safe, welcoming sanctuary for children, mothers, and refugees within clean, residential fortress vaults. Lamashtu’s systematic targeting of pregnancies and children to create abyssal monsters earns her Folgrit’s absolute, protective fury. |
| Asmodeus | Ideological Contempt. The Lord of Hell thrives on perfect bureaucratic hierarchy, strict laws, and contracts. Lamashtu represents chaotic, feral madness and unstructured mutation. Asmodeus views her followers merely as rabid animals that need to be systematically caged, collared, or eradicated. |
| Urgathoa | Pragmatic Distance. Both goddesses belong to the Devouring Void due to their alignment with physical corruption. However, while Urgathoa seeks to halt life entirely through the cold stillness of undeath, Lamashtu celebrates the wild, shifting vitality of fleshly mutation. They rarely clash, but they do not ally. |
| Pazuzu | Demonic Rivalry. Pazuzu (The King of Wind Demons) is Lamashtu’s ancient ex-spouse and most bitter demonic competitor. They are locked in a vicious shadow war for control over Abyssal air currents and mortal corruption, and any shrine dedicated to Lamashtu will actively draw Pazuzu’s spiteful intervention. |
