Dranngvit: The Debt Minder

QUOTE

“Stone remembers the weight of every slight. You may seek to forget the debts of your blood and the insults to your house, but I am the ledger that never closes. Pay in coin, pay in sweat, or pay in blood—the balance will be maintained.”
— The Grudge-Book, Sacred Liturgy of the Debt Minder

Dranngvit is the harsh, unforgiving goddess of vengeance, bitterness, retribution, and the cold reality of necessary debt. A half-sister to Torag, she exists as the necessary shadow side of dwarven justice. While other deities focus on community harmony or the letter of the law, Dranngvit is the divine force of consequences. She teaches that insults to one’s honor, clan, or family must not be allowed to fade, but instead must be meticulously tracked, weighed, and repaid with interest. She is a goddess of the cold, hard reality that actions have permanent consequences, serving as a warning to all that dwarven patience is not the same as forgiveness.

Appearance & Iconography

Dranngvit is traditionally depicted as a severe, gaunt dwarven woman with eyes as hard and cold as unworked granite. Her beard is sparse and tightly coiled against her jaw, often threaded with small, sharp iron hooks designed to hang “debt tokens”—physical reminders of unfinished retribution. She is draped in heavy, dark iron-gray heavy furs and leather, and she always carries a massive, rusted-iron scale in one hand and a thick, heavy, iron-bound ledger in the other. Her presence is rarely loud; she is described as a heavy, suffocating silence in the room, acting as a constant reminder of unpaid bills and unresolved angers.

Her holy symbol is a heavy stone scale balanced with a sharp, downward-pointing dagger, or a jagged iron tally-stick etched with deep, ancient runic marks. Sacred animals include creatures that hold territorial grudges and thrive on patient, scavenging retribution, such as vultures, venomous snakes, and solitary, territorial cave-spiders.

Canonical Eraedal History & Mythos

The Ledger of the First Grudges

Dranngvit’s divine mythos states that she emerged at the very moment the first dwarven clan was betrayed by a neighboring house over a border-mine dispute. While the other deities sought to mediate the peace, Dranngvit took the first tally-stick and carved the name of the traitorous clan into the stone, declaring that until the stolen ore was returned with interest, the grudge would remain open. She has since served as the keeper of the Ledger of First Grudges, a spiritual record containing every unresolved insult, stolen asset, and broken oath in dwarven history.

The Divine Auditor of Retribution

Within dwarven society, Dranngvit’s clergy function as the “Debt-Minders.” When a clan is cheated out of a trade deal, when a warrior is slain in a cowardly ambush, or when a family heirloom is stolen, the local Debt-Minder is summoned. They are not judges (who focus on the law) or diplomats (who focus on peace). They are the ones who calculate the price of retribution. They advise clan leaders on exactly what is owed to balance the scales, turning a chaotic, emotional blood feud into a controlled, tactical campaign of retribution—ensuring the clan gets back exactly what it lost, plus the “interest” of the enemy’s suffering.

Divine Relationships

Dranngvit is a solitary, largely feared entity within the divine halls of Forgeheart, acting as the necessary, unpleasant edge of the dwarven family structure.

Deity / FactionDynamic & Lore
ToragThe Harsh Sister. Torag recognizes her necessity, using her ledgers to keep the dwarven people from being exploited by foreign empires. However, he is constantly working to temper her bitterness, ensuring she does not turn a localized border dispute into a full-scale, annihilation war.
MagrimThe Darker Reflection. Magrim manages the dead, while Dranngvit manages the ledger of what they owed or were owed in life. They share a profound, quiet understanding of the finality of existence; if you die with an open debt in Dranngvit’s ledger, Magrim will not grant your spirit peace until it is reconciled.
AngraddThe Vanguard Alliance. Angradd shares a dark, pragmatic understanding with his half-sister. While Angradd handles the open kinetic movement of war, he relies on Dranngvit’s unyielding scorecards to identify exactly which foreign empires or betrayers require systematic military execution.
AbadarContradictory Commerce. Abadar thrives on fair trade, interest rates, and banking stability. Dranngvit focuses on the unpaid debts and the retribution owed when trade goes wrong. They collaborate frequently in mercantile courts, but Abadar views her bitterness as fundamentally bad for long-term economic prosperity.
BolkaThe Romantic Ruin. Bolka is the goddess of happy marriages and love. Dranngvit is the goddess of bitter retribution and grudges. Their portfolios clash violently; Dranngvit’s cultists frequently target partners who have cheated or betrayed their marital vows, while Bolka actively works to mend those relationships.
CalistriaThe Grudge-Rivalry. Calistria is the elven goddess of revenge and retribution. They both share a portfolio of balance and vengeance, but Calistria acts out of mercurial, chaotic spite and eroticized intrigue, while Dranngvit acts out of disciplined, cold, structural necessity. They view each other with mutual, professional skepticism.

Campaign Context: Eraedal & Borlon Notes

The Ledger of Retribution

Within the structural pillars of your campaign, Dranngvit’s portfolio represents the dark reality of the Timro Garrison’s occupation of Borlon. As the Timro Navy extracts sugarcane and natural resources from Oen Island, the native dwarven enclaves and local merchant houses are keeping a meticulous, secret ledger of every stolen asset, forced labor mandate, and murdered contact.

As your special forces unit interface with the anti-Timro factions, they may find that the local resistance is not just fighting for liberation, but for a massive, generational “debt repayment” against the annexation of their home. An operator familiar with Dranngvit’s liturgy could use this ledger to align with the local Head Sheriff, providing the insurgent cells with the intelligence needed to systematically dismantle Timro supply chains, effectively collecting on the debt the occupying garrison owes the city.
