Cayden Cailean: The Drunken Hero

QUOTE

“Chains are forged by tyrants to be broken by brave fools. Pour a cup for the fallen, pass the bottle to the living, and draw your steel whenever a soul screams for freedom.”
— The Placard of Wisdom, Core Philosophy of the Drunken Hero

Cayden Cailean is Eraedal’s fiercely beloved patron of freedom, bravery, ale, wine, and casual carousing. Unique among the ascended divinities, Cayden did not achieve godhood through millennia of planar evolution or elaborate arcane ascension. He was a normal, baseline human mercenary who took the ultimate cosmic dare while completely black-out drunk. Because of his mortal origins, he remains the most down-to-earth, approachable, and fiercely egalitarian deity in the cosmos. He despises tyranny, institutional cruelty, and the stuffy bureaucracy of the higher planes, acting as the ultimate cosmic liberator.

Appearance & Iconography

Cayden Cailean is traditionally depicted as a burly, handsome human frontiersman or mercenary with an unruly, sun-streaked beard and a wide, charismatic smile. He is usually dressed in worn, practical leather armor scuffed from tavern brawls and tactical retreats, holding a frothing tankard of ale in his left hand and a flashing, masterfully balanced rapier in his right. He lacks the pristine, unblinking glare of other ascended gods, his eyes crinkling with infectious laughter and a bit of rogueish charm.

His holy symbol is a simple, overflowing tankard or stein, often stamped with a starburst or crafted out of common pewter. Sacred animals include those known for independence, companionship, and high loyalty, particularly hounds, hunting mastiffs, and common urban house cats.

Canonical Eraedal History & Mythos

The Starstone Incident

The defining legend of Cayden Cailean is his absolute, legendary ascension in the year 2765 AR. At the time, Cayden was a highly skilled, incredibly popular mercenary based out of the international hub of Absalom. Following a spectacularly successful job, he and his companions entered a prolonged, multi-day brawling binge at a local tavern. After a rival patron mocked his bravery, a black-out drunk Cayden took a massive financial bet that he could cross the pit and survive the lethal Test of the Starstone—a divine gauntlet designed by ancient cosmic architects that had claimed the lives of the world’s greatest kings and wizards.

To the absolute shock of the mortal world and the resident deities, Cayden Cailean didn’t just survive the shifting traps, psychological terrors, and planar guardians; he walked out of the cathedral three days later as a fully realized, immortal god of freedom. To this day, Cayden genuinely cannot remember the specific traps or cosmic riddles he solved to achieve godhood, a fact that deeply amuses him and endlessly frustrates more academic deities like Nethys.

The Liberator’s Vanguard

Because Cayden values personal agency above all else, his church does not operate out of massive, oppressive cathedrals or highly structured hierarchies. Instead, his “temples” are the local taverns, alehouses, and roadside inns of the Material Plane. His clergy are freedom fighters, underground railroad conductors, and high-energy duelists who view the act of brewing fine beer and liberating slave caravans as equally sacred duties. Within the dualistic framework of pantheon/light, Cayden represents the chaotic, unyielding spark of individual liberty that resists the suffocating, institutional control of systemic tyranny.

Divine Relationships

Cayden Cailean is a loose cannon in planar politics, maintaining open doors with the fun-loving and the righteous, while aggressively antagonizing the legalistic and the cruel.

Deity / FactionDynamic & Lore
TruddThe Mountain’s Bros Cayden shares a fiercely loyal, often humerous relationship with the dwarven god Trudd. The two regularly slip away from their divine duties to travel the mortal realm together, sharing legendary drinking bouts & raucous tavern brawls.
BolkaThe Sibling Friction. As the dwarven goddess of marriage, Trudd’s sister Bolka is thoroughly exhausted by Cayden’s non-traditional, non-committal nature. She constantly meddles in their relationship, trying to pressure Cayden into a formal, traditional dwarven union, which Cayden constantly ducks out of out of sheer panic.
CalistriaThe Elysian Carousers. Cayden and the Savored Sting are frequent partners-in-crime in the gardens of Elysium. They share a visceral hatred for tyrants and a mutual love for physical indulgence, though Cayden knows never to cross her grudge line. Calistria actively sabotages Bolka’s matchmaking schemes out of pure spite to keep Cayden independent.
AsmodeusAbsolute, Open Hostility. Asmodeus represents everything Cayden loathes: chains, absolute hierarchy, contracts designed to entrap souls, and institutional slavery. Cayden considers it a personal point of pride to actively smash Asmodean trade routes and disrupt the legal networks of Hell.
IomedaeThe Stiff Shield. The Inheritor respects Cayden’s battlefield bravery and his defense of the innocent, but she finds his complete lack of discipline, public intoxication, and unpredictable antics incredibly frustrating. Cayden respects her virtue but thinks she desperately needs a stiff drink to loosen her armor.
ToragThe Suffocating Hearth. The Father of Creation respects Cayden’s martial skill with the rapier but heavily disapproves of his reckless lifestyle, viewing his influence as a direct threat to the traditional, orderly structure of the dwarven clan system.
